🎯 Goal

Follow GetStream/stream-chat-js#1943 (REACT-1341): Channel.ensureWatched() is renamed to Channel.watch(). The new watch() sends nothing for a channel already watched and loaded, joins a watch in flight, and resolves with the instance to use.

Needs a stream-chat release that includes GetStream/stream-chat-js#1943: until then ensureWatched() still exists and watch() resolves with the server response, so this branch does not type-check against the published rc.24. The stream-chat version is bumped once that release is out.

🛠 Implementation details

SDK

  • ChannelSearchResultItem, UserSearchResultItem and the channel detail's "send direct message" action call watch() instead of ensureWatched(); the DM flows still use the instance watch() resolves with.
  • MessageSearchResultItem loads its channel with the jump alone: jumpToMessage(item.id, { watchChannel: true }) loads the page around the message and the channel state, and watches, in one request. It used to call watch() first for a channel that was never loaded, which sent a newest-page query before the jump's own query.
  • No public API of this package changes.

Examples

  • The tutorial steps, the ai-chatbot and the vite example call await channel.watch() without an if (!channel.initialized) guard. watch() itself sends nothing for a channel already watched and loaded, and initialized doesn't mean watched or loaded: a channel from a list queried with watch: false, or after query() / create(), is initialized without being watched or without messages.
  • The vite example's ?focus=<cid>:<messageId> deep link loads its channel with the jump alone, like the message search result.

Docs

  • AGENTS.md, ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md, ai-docs/instance-configuration.md and ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md describe the single watch(), and point to channel.reload() for refreshing a watched channel. CHANGELOG.md is generated and left as is.

client.channel() instead of channelManager.ensure()

  • refactor!: make Channel.watch() watch a channel only when it is not watched and loaded stream-chat-js#1943 also marks ChannelManager.ensure() as @internal; client.channel() is the public way to get a channel and calls it, with the same behaviour.
  • The SDK (the user search result's DM, the "send direct message" action), the mock builders, the tests, the examples (including examples/vite/docs-playwright), AGENTS.md and the AI docs call client.channel().
  • The AI docs describe client.channel() as the public way to get a channel, calling the internal channelManager.ensure().

Tests

  • SearchResultItem: the "already watched" test marks the channel watched and loaded and checks that no query is sent; the message result test expects the jump alone, with { watchChannel: true }.
  • ScrollToLatestMessageButton: the tests that simulate a reconnect re-query through channel.reload(), since watch() on a watched channel now sends nothing.
  • Against a local stream-chat build of refactor!: make Channel.watch() watch a channel only when it is not watched and loaded stream-chat-js#1943: yarn types, yarn lint and yarn test (3168) pass; the vite, tutorial and ai-chatbot examples type-check. Checked in the vite example in the browser.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • Channel loading now follows a consistent watch flow across search, messaging, and example apps. Repeated watch calls reuse already-loaded channels or join an in-progress watch rather than triggering duplicate requests.
    • Opening a message search result loads the channel state as part of jumping to the matching message, with failures reported through existing error handling.
  • Documentation
    • Updated migration guidance and examples to reflect current channel creation and watch behavior.

stream-chat renames ensureWatched() to watch(): it sends nothing for a channel already watched and
loaded and resolves with the instance to use. The channel and user search results and the channel
detail's "send direct message" action call it. A message search result loads its channel with the
jump alone (jumpToMessage with watchChannel), one request instead of a watch followed by the jump.

watch() itself sends nothing for a channel already watched and loaded, and initialized does not
mean watched or loaded, so the tutorial, ai-chatbot and vite examples call it directly. The vite
deep link loads its channel with the jump alone (jumpToMessage with watchChannel).

📝 Walkthrough

Channel initialization examples and migration guidance now use watch() instead of ensureWatched(). Search handlers use watch() or jumpToMessage() with channel watching. Tests now use client.channel() and cover reload and returned-channel behavior.

Changes: Channel watch updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migration and API guidance
AGENTS.md, ai-docs/ai-migration-v14-v15.md, ai-docs/instance-configuration.md, ai-docs/v15-breaking-changes.md
Guidance and examples now use client.channel() and watch(). Members-only, search-result, repeated-call, and message-query behavior is documented.
Application channel initialization
examples/ai-chatbot/..., examples/tutorial/..., examples/vite/src/App.tsx, examples/vite/src/ChatLayout/..., examples/vite/src/NewConversation/..., examples/vite/src/SingleChannel/...
Application flows construct channels with client.channel() and call watch() without initialization guards. Message focus passes watchChannel: true to jumpToMessage().
Channel creation and setup examples
examples/vite/docs-playwright/*, examples/vite/src/AppSettings/..., examples/vite/src/Debug/...
Channel setup uses positional client.channel() arguments. Existing channel data, creation calls, and fallback behavior remain unchanged.
Selection flows and test alignment
src/components/Search/..., src/plugins/ChannelDetail/..., src/components/**/__tests__/*, src/mock-builders/utils.ts
Search and direct-message flows use watch() or jumpToMessage() with channel watching. Test setup uses client.channel(), and tests cover reloads and returned channel instances.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6977d

This PR moves channel loading to Channel.watch(), which only returns a channel in a newer stream-chat release than the one currently declared. With the current dependency the build fails type-checking, and the direct-message and user-search flows would receive the wrong object. Update stream-chat to the release containing the matching change and refresh the lockfile before merging.

Require the matching stream-chat release before consuming watch() as a channel.

The declared stream-chat@10.0.0-rc.24 returns a server response from watch(), not a Channel. The supplied pipeline therefore reports TS2345 when Lines 247–248 pass dm to navigation and ingestion. If this version runs, the direct-message action also passes the wrong object. The same return assumption occurs in UserSearchResultItem. Update the root, example, and peer dependency requirements to a release with the new contract before merging these call sites. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

stream-chat marks ChannelManager.ensure() internal; client.channel() is the public way to get a
channel and calls it. The search result DM, the "send direct message" action, the mock builders
and the tests use client.channel().

Update stream-chat before using the new watch() contract.

With the declared 10.0.0-rc.24 dependency, watch() returns a channel response, not a Channel. Line 220 passes that response to ingestChannel, and yarn types fails with TS2345. The same dependency still queries an already-watched channel, which explains the failing search test. Update the dependency declarations and lockfile to a release containing stream-chat-js PR #1943 before merging this migration. (github.com)
