Draft. Do not merge until the working group confirms the disposition of #16.

What this changes

§ 5.6 now defines pricing[].floor as the seller's offer floor at proposal time, and states that it is not the downstream auction floor and not a guarantee that bids at or above it will clear. The meaning of the field is unchanged.

Type

  • Editorial — no normative effect
  • Normative — changes what the spec requires
  • Breaking — would break an implementation already built to this draft
  • Examples / schema / docs only

Checklist

  • The body section is updated
  • Appendix A (field index) matches the body
  • Appendix B (fields by marker, and the counts) matches the body
  • Any affected example in examples/ is updated and still parses — none implied auction-floor semantics, so none changed
  • RFC 2119 keywords used deliberately — MUST / SHOULD / MAY are not synonyms
  • The no-inheritance rule (§ 2) still holds
  • Anything selectable declares available[] and included[]; anything settable declares bounds (§ 3.1, § 3.2)
  • No confidential or commercially sensitive content

Knock-on effects

None. For PREFERRED_DEAL, PRIVATE_AUCTION and OPEN_AUCTION the downstream floor stays with the exchange.

@Sirajmx, Postindustria (IAB Tech Lab member) supports this clarification. It settles what the field means: the seller's offer floor, not a downstream floor. Our deal price change request builds on it and proposes renaming floor to min_rate, to match the other rates. floor stays, deprecated, until 4.0. We leave the final name to the working group.

One wording point: "the downstream auction floor" doesn't name a field, and three fields downstream are floors. The Deals API 1.0 terms.dealfloor and OpenRTB 2.6 Deal.bidfloor carry the deal's price. OpenRTB 2.6 Imp.bidfloor is the exchange's per-impression floor. Your reply on #16 names that last one: "the impression-level floor applied by the exchange at auction time". @fgranata also asked that floor "neither constrains nor describes" it, so that implementers don't wire the two together. Suggested last sentences:

It is not the deal's price, which the Deals API 1.0 terms.dealfloor and the OpenRTB 2.6 Deal.bidfloor carry. It neither sets nor constrains the per-impression floor that the exchange applies at auction time (OpenRTB 2.6 Imp.bidfloor). Bids at or above it are not guaranteed to clear.

The change request proposes that agreed_rate fill both Deal fields, never floor. Its pricetype says whether agreed_rate is a fixed price or a minimum bid, as the Deals API reads dealfloor.

Open questions:

  1. For PREFERRED_DEAL and PRIVATE_AUCTION line items, which OpenProposal field, if any, supplies the deal's Deal.bidfloor, or is it set at execution (§ 1.1)? Answered in part in our deal price change request: it proposes agreed_rate, as @fgranata (#19) and @VJAlkimi (#30) read it. Still open: whether the working group adopts that mapping.

Revised 2026-10-27: The comment names the Deals API and OpenRTB Deal floors. It links our deal price change request, which answers open question 1 in part and proposes renaming floor to min_rate, with deprecation.

Analyzed and generated with the help of Claude, fully reviewed by me.

The floor row now says it "neither constrains nor describes the
downstream auction floor", as #16 asked, and names that floor: the
per-impression floor the exchange applies at auction time (OpenRTB 2.6
Imp.bidfloor).
