Add BBQ Quantization preprocessing function - #2865
Closes#2162.
This PR add support for compressing a dataset in the BBQ format on GPU.
On 1Mx1024 rows on a local RT Pro 6k, it can quantize a dataset up to 85x faster than its CPU counterpart.
This PR also modifies the C++ API related to BBQ: The quantizer object now only hold information related to the dataset, while bbq_dataset_owning_storage hold the quantized dataset. Related comment in previous PR: #2654 (comment)

📝 Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added BBQ quantizer building and dataset encoding, with configurable document and query code layouts, distance metrics, and quantization settings.
Encoded datasets can include document codes and, when layouts differ, a separate query encoding.
Bug Fixes
BBQ dataset creation now rejects incompatible quantizers, including those with differing centroid norms. Graph construction rejects datasets without encoded storage.
Documentation
Updated the C and C++ BBQ API guides with configuration options, the quantizer and storage model, and quantizer lifetime requirements.
BBQ now separates shared centroid quantizers from layout-specific encoded storages. The change adds GPU build and transform operations and updates C bindings, host transfer, distance calculations, and neighbor-search paths to use the storage model.
Changes: BBQ quantization and neighbor integration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared quantizer and storage model cpp/include/cuvs/preprocessing/quantize/bbq.hpp, fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-preprocessing-quantize-bbq.md
The API separates centroid ownership from layout-specific codes and metadata. A dataset owns one quantizer and can hold multiple storages. The documentation describes the updated types, parameters, and lifetime requirements.
GPU quantizer build and transform cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/detail/bbq_quantizer.cuh, cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/bbq.cu
GPU build computes a centroid and squared norm. Transform validates inputs, encodes the configured document and query layouts, and stores per-row factors.
Host transfer and C bindings cpp/internal/cuvs_internal/preprocessing/bbq_cpu_quantize.hpp, c/src/preprocessing/quantize/bbq.cpp, c/src/neighbors/cagra.cpp, c/include/cuvs/preprocessing/quantize/bbq.h, fern/pages/c_api/c-api-preprocessing-quantize-bbq.md
Host transfer uploads one shared quantizer and associates each storage with it. The C bindings construct storage views, copy centroid norms to device memory, and validate compatible quantizers when building a dataset view.
Distance calculations and neighbor search cpp/src/preprocessing/quantize/detail/bbq_distance.cuh, cpp/src/neighbors/detail/cagra/*, cpp/src/neighbors/detail/nn_descent.cuh
Distance helpers and CAGRA and NN-Descent paths read codes and row metadata through storage views. Dataset validation and layout selection use the storage collection.
Quantization and neighbor tests cpp/tests/preprocessing/bbq_quantization.cu, cpp/tests/neighbors/ann_cagra_bbq.cuh, cpp/tests/test_utils.cuh, cpp/tests/CMakeLists.txt, c/tests/core/dataset_c.cu
Added GPU-versus-CPU and reconstruction tests across layouts, metrics, and input shapes. Neighbor tests check storage collections, and C tests check rejection of mismatched centroid norms.
This change adds fast GPU BBQ quantization but leaves several API-contract gaps. It breaks the old public C++ BBQ API without a deprecation path, its compatibility checks can accept mismatched centroids, and the transform documentation misstates when inputs may be released. A few narrow robustness issues also remain. These are fixable with small edits and should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.

Document the new build, transform, quantizer_view and bbq_dataset_view_storage APIs.
The header adds the public functions build and transform (header Lines 441-489). The header also exposes quantizer_view<DataT> and bbq_dataset_view_storage. This page documents none of them. Users cannot find the new GPU preprocessing entry points from the API reference.
The centroid and centroid_norm_sq rows (Lines 121-122) have no descriptions. The quantizer row of the storage table (Line 155) also has no description. The page does not explain the lifetime requirement between a storage and its quantizer.
The generator builds this page from Doxygen comments. Add Doxygen comments to quantizer_view, bbq_dataset_view_storage and the quantizer fields in cpp/include/cuvs/preprocessing/quantize/bbq.hpp. Then regenerate this page so that it includes build and transform.

Do we need to expose the storage class to the public API? The user interacts with the dataset object, right? Do they ever need access to the stoage underneath? If not, this should live in the detail namespace. I think the user should only interact with the dataset object.
Loosen the tightest error budgets to avoid architecture-dependent flakes.
The packed_4b and transposed_4b budgets are 0.01f against a measured 0.00997. The margin is about 0.3%. The packed_1b budget has a similar margin (0.5f against 0.4953). Floating-point differences between GPU architectures or CUDA versions can change the centroid sum or an interval-search tie. Such a change can push the error over the budget without any real regression. The monotonic checks at Lines 394-397 already catch a quality regression. Keep the tight values only if you need them to catch small drifts.

Document stream-ordered completion for BBQ transform.
cuvsBbqQuantizerTransform follows cuVS’s stream-ordered API model and should not add an internal synchronization. The result is independent of quantizer and dataset only after the resources stream completes. A caller that relies on the current wording can reuse or release an input too early and produce incorrect output.

Remove noexcept from dataset::view() and the vector-taking dataset_view constructor.
view() builds its result through the dataset_view constructor that takes std::vector<owning_storage_type>&. That constructor calls add_storage, which calls storages.push_back(...). push_back can throw std::bad_alloc. Because both functions are noexcept, an allocation failure during this growth calls std::terminate instead of reaching the caller, which can then handle the error.
