The fern/pages/lucene_api directory is generated from sources and can be completely ignored.
The majority of the actually interesting changes are in the java/cuvs-lucene/compat directory, which adds version-specific implementations. The way it works: each incompatible change is captured in an abstract base class that is then inherited from in the shared code. For example, KnnFloatVectorQuery introduced incompatible changes in 10.3, so there are now two abstract CompatKnnFloatVectorQuery classes, for 10.2 and 10.3, that take care of the differences, and GPUKnnFloatVectorQuery in the shared code adds all the version-independent logic. This approach is repeated for every incompatible change.
java/cuvs-lucene/compat/README.md explains the details.
Most of the code changes are mechanical, with a one exceptions: in 10.3, Lucene made KnnFloatVectorQuery collection "optimistic" (OptimisticKnnVectorQuery apache/lucene#14226), which depending on segment sizes, now breaks GPU search with k close to 1024. So all changes around MAX_CAGRA_K are a temporary workaround for that issue to make tests pass.
This PR adds support for Lucene 10.3.

Relates to NVIDIA#2702
Added support for Lucene 10.3, including accelerated HNSW, binary-quantized, scalar-quantized, and GPU search codecs.
Added GPU search handling for large result requests: searches can use brute force when available; otherwise, CAGRA returns up to 1,024 results per segment.
Compatibility
Codecs from earlier Lucene releases remain available for reading existing indexes but cannot write new segments. Use the current codec factory when writing.
Documentation
Updated installation guidance, API references, and the Lucene guide with release-specific setup and compatibility details.
The PR adds a Lucene 10.3 module and release-specific codecs. It introduces compatibility adapters for Lucene 10.2 and 10.3, limits writes with older codec generations, updates vector search behavior, and adds cross-module back-compatibility tests and documentation.
Changes: Lucene version support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Lucene module and compatibility wiring java/cuvs-lucene/pom.xml, java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.2/*, java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.3/*, java/cuvs-lucene/compat/*
The Maven build now includes the Lucene 10.3 module and selects release-specific compatibility sources. Compatibility adapters handle Lucene 10.2 and 10.3 query, reader, and test APIs.
Codec generations and write behavior java/cuvs-lucene/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/CuVSFilterCodec.java, java/cuvs-lucene/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/*Codec.java, java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.3/src/since/java/*, java/cuvs-lucene/lucene-10.3/src/main/resources/META-INF/services/*, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/TestBackCompat.java
The Lucene 10.3 module registers four new codecs. Older codec generations remain readable and reject writes; tests cover codec registration, read-only behavior, and unavailable formats.
Vector query and GPU search behavior java/cuvs-lucene/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/CuVS2510GPUVectorsReader.java, java/cuvs-lucene/src/main/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/GPUKnnFloatVectorQuery.java, java/cuvs-lucene/compat/knn-*/src/main/java/*, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/*
The GPU reader and query use the compatibility adapters. CAGRA searches cap results at 1,024 per segment, and larger requests use brute force when that index exists. Tests cover per-segment query behavior and large top-K searches.
Cross-module index compatibility java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/java/com/nvidia/cuvs/lucene/TestBackCompatIndices.java, java/cuvs-lucene/src/test/resources/backcompat/README.md
Tests now generate and archive indexes for each module, then read and upgrade indexes from earlier Lucene versions when configured.
API generation and release documentation fern/*, java/cuvs-lucene/README.md, java/cuvs-lucene/MAINTAINING.md, java/cuvs-lucene/compat/README.md
API generation scans Lucene-specific source directories. The documentation describes Lucene 10.3 artifacts and codecs, codec read-only behavior, compatibility variants, and release-maintenance steps.
The Lucene 10.3 support looks sound. Before or soon after merge, fix the filtered GPU search fallback for segments that have both index types, so large filtered requests keep using the GPU. Also correct the API reference and the maintenance and user-guide claims.

Document the public search methods.
This page replaces the public search methods with protected doSearch methods. Applications cannot call doSearch, and the page no longer shows that search takes Bits on Lucene 10.2 and AcceptDocs on 10.3. Update the generator to document both public signatures. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

The GPU search codec, from `CuVSCodecs.gpuSearch`, runs both index build and search on the GPU. Configure it with [`GPUSearchParams`](/api-reference/lucene-api-com-nvidia-cuvs-lucene-gpusearchparams). A stock `KnnFloatVectorQuery` already searches on the GPU against this codec, so existing query code keeps working; [`GPUKnnFloatVectorQuery`](/api-reference/lucene-api-com-nvidia-cuvs-lucene-gpuknnfloatvectorquery) adds control over the CAGRA search parameters and lets cuVS serve all segments in a single request, which is usually faster. Limit the 1024-hit statement to the CAGRA search path.
A filtered query can fall back to Lucene’s exact search and return more than 1024 hits from one segment. For example, a filter accepting 1200 vectors with k = 1500 takes that path. State that the limit applies to the per-segment CAGRA search, not every search. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

State the limits of the cross-module check.
Without a supported GPU runtime, testWriteIndicesForLaterReleases skips, so the later modules can skip these upgrade checks. The test also writes only the three HNSW codecs, not the GPU-search codec. Require a supported GPU and JDK 22 or newer for this check, and identify which codecs it covers. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve the brute-force path for oversized filtered leaves.
When a filtered GPU leaf has both CAGRA and brute-force indexes and Lucene's leafK exceeds the CAGRA limit, the current cap can reduce collectorK to that limit. CuVS2510GPUVectorsReader.doSearch then selects CAGRA instead of brute force. CompatKnnFloatVectorQuery.approximateSearch discards the short result, so Lucene performs an exact scan.
This affects an oversized filtered leafK, not a query whose own k exceeds 1,024, because Math.max(k, ...) preserves the query's k. Limit the collector only when the segment cannot serve leafK through brute force.
