What is the current behavior?

After Chrome DevTools disconnects, the app log fills with:

InspectorServer::Send error: Operation canceled

Since #390 the server closes the client's dispatch_io channel on EOF, but JsV8InspectorClient is never told. sender_ keeps the closed channel, so every later CDP message (each console.log, every Debugger.scriptParsed, …) is serialized, written, and fails with ECANCELED.

Other state is left behind too:

  • The V8 inspector session stays alive with the departed frontend's breakpoints and enabled domains. A breakpoint or debugger; hit after DevTools closes, or a disconnect while paused, leaves the app frozen in runMessageLoopOnPause with nobody to resume it.
  • Tracing, IO streams and worker sessions are only reset when the next frontend connects.
  • The read handler leaks per connection. __block dispatch_io_handler_t receiver references itself under ARC, so the block and its channel are never freed.
  • Each AttachRequest opens another listening socket. The CLI re-posts it every 5 s until it sees the port, and again per debug session. Each post called InspectorServer::Init, which bound a new socket on the next free port and never closed it.
  • Reconnecting while paused could hang the socket thread. It called disconnect(), which took the isolate Locker there and blocked while the main thread was paused.

What is the new behavior?

InspectorServer

  • Each client is a Connection with an id and its own serial queue. Closing it is idempotent and fires the new onClientDisconnected(id) callback. The sender becomes a no-op once the connection is closed, and ECANCELED from writes still queued at close time is no longer logged.
  • The self-referencing read block is replaced by a read loop that accumulates each length-prefixed frame until done, so there is no retain cycle and no set_low_water trick.
  • Client sockets get SO_NOSIGPIPE.

JsV8InspectorClient

  • On disconnect it clears the sender (ignoring stale connection ids, so a late close can't clobber a newer frontend) and resets the frontend's state: IO streams, tracing, worker sessions, and the main session.
  • The main-session reset is a sentinel in the frontend message queue, so it is ordered before anything a new connection sends, and it never takes the Locker on the socket thread.
    • Outside a pause, the drain replaces the session directly.
    • Inside the pause loop, which may sit under session_->dispatchProtocolMessage, and where V8 touches every session right after the loop returns, it does setSkipAllPauses(true) + resume(). The session is swapped by the next drain once the loop has fully exited. The pause loop can run on a non-main thread, so the drain won't pump while a reset is pending.
    • This mirrors WorkerInspectorClient's deferred reset.
  • On connect, the session is only reset when replacing a still-attached frontend. Otherwise it is either fresh or its reset is already queued by the disconnect. Connect and disconnect run on different connection queues, so a dedicated lifecycle mutex serializes them.
  • A session reset drops the departing frontend's still-queued messages, so their replies (whose ids may collide) never reach the next frontend. Messages carry their connection id, and any message read from a connection after it was replaced is dropped.
  • The listening socket is opened once; repeated AttachRequests get the same port.
  • One client at a time: a new connection closes the previous one, instead of leaving it open but silent while its commands kept running in the new session. Multi-client support (separate V8 sessions per connection, as Chrome/Node do) can come as a follow-up.

Testing

  • Full suite: ./run_tests.sh --keep-sim, 1824 specs, 0 failures.
  • End-to-end on a simulator, using a small CDP client against TestRunner with a keep-alive entry script and a setInterval console ticker:
    • Idle disconnect: ticks continue and there are zero InspectorServer log lines (previously one Send error per tick).
    • Disconnect while paused (Debugger.pause, held 2 s, then close): ticks stop during the pause and resume ~100 ms after the socket closes. Previously the app stayed paused.
    • Reconnect after both: Runtime.evaluate answers on the fresh session.
    • Takeover: while client A is attached, client B connects. The server closes A, and B's Runtime.evaluate answers.
    • Repeated AttachRequest: always logs port 18183, with a single listening socket.
    • After five connect/disconnect cycles, the app holds only its listening socket, with no leaked client fds.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved inspector connection handling when a client connects, disconnects, or replaces the active client.
    • Inspector messages are handled more reliably; incomplete messages and connection errors close the affected connection.
    • Messages and disconnect events from replaced clients are ignored, and inspector session state is reset when the frontend changes.
  • Improvements
    • Repeated attach requests reuse the existing inspector listening port.

…nects

Since #390 closes the client channel on EOF, nothing told
JsV8InspectorClient: sender_ kept the closed channel, so every later CDP
message (console.log, scriptParsed, ...) failed with
"InspectorServer::Send error: Operation canceled". The departed
frontend's session also stayed alive with its breakpoints and enabled
domains, so a pause after disconnect (or a disconnect while paused) left
the app frozen with nobody to resume it.

InspectorServer:
- Track each client as a Connection with an id and its own serial queue.
Closing is idempotent and reports onClientDisconnected(id); the sender
drops messages once closed, and ECANCELED from writes queued before
the close is no longer logged.
- Replace the self-referencing __block read handler (an ARC retain cycle
that leaked the block and channel per connection) with a read loop
that accumulates each frame until done.
- Set SO_NOSIGPIPE on client sockets.

JsV8InspectorClient:
- On disconnect, clear the sender (ignoring stale connection ids) and
reset the frontend's state: IO streams, tracing, worker sessions, and
  the main session.
- Reset the main session through the message queue instead of taking the
Locker on the socket thread, which blocked while the isolate was paused.
Inside the pause loop the reset resumes and skips further pauses, and
the session is swapped by the next drain once the loop has unwound.
- Only reset on connect when replacing a still-attached frontend.
- Open the listening socket once: the CLI re-posts AttachRequest every
few seconds until it sees the port, and each post used to open another
  listener on the next port.

📝 Walkthrough

The inspector server assigns IDs to client connections and reports connection and disconnection events. The V8 inspector client tracks the active frontend, queues messages, and coordinates main-session resets with active pause loops.

Changes: Inspector connection and session lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Connection-scoped server transport
NativeScript/inspector/InspectorServer.h, NativeScript/inspector/InspectorServer.mm
The server assigns connection IDs, provides per-connection senders, and invokes connection and disconnection callbacks. It reads and writes framed messages per connection and closes connections on specified read or write failures.
Frontend connection and state lifecycle
NativeScript/inspector/JsV8InspectorClient.h, NativeScript/inspector/JsV8InspectorClient.mm
The client starts the server only when no listening port is stored. It tracks the active frontend connection, ignores disconnects from superseded connections, and clears frontend and worker state when the active connection changes or disconnects.
Queued messages and deferred session reset
NativeScript/inspector/JsV8InspectorClient.h, NativeScript/inspector/JsV8InspectorClient.mm
The client schedules message drains and handles a pending session reset after a pause loop exits. The reset marker is intercepted rather than dispatched as a protocol message.

When a new DevTools client takes over while the previous client's command is still running, the new client can receive that response or stale notifications. If the request IDs match, it can treat the old response as the answer to its own request. If two clients connect at nearly the same time, the newer one can also be disconnected. The first issue should be resolved before merging.

Comment thread NativeScript/inspector/JsV8InspectorClient.mm
…a time

Each connection runs its callbacks on its own queue, so an old
connection's disconnect could interleave with the next connection's
connect: the new frontend saw no attached frontend, skipped its reset,
and its Debugger.enable / Tracing.start / IO streams were then wiped by
the old disconnect's late cleanup. Serialize both handlers with a
dedicated lifecycle mutex (not senderMutex_, which RegisterWorkerTarget
takes after workerTargetsMutex_).

The server now accepts one client at a time: a new client closes the
previous one, under a lock held across both callbacks so back-to-back
accepts cannot hand out senders in the opposite order. A session reset
also drops the departing frontend's still-queued messages, so their
replies (whose ids may collide) never reach the next frontend.

Reject messages from a connection after takeover.

dispatch_io_close(..., DISPATCH_IO_STOP) is asynchronous and does not wait for queued read handlers to finish. If the old framed read completed before takeover, its handler can later call connection->onMessage(utf8) on the old serial queue. The callback has no connection identity, so the new frontend can process the old command or receive its reply.

Pass the connection ID to the message callback and hold the lifecycle lock while rejecting stale messages and processing current messages.

Closing a replaced connection does not cancel a read handler that has
already assembled a message, so the old frontend's last command could
still be dispatched to the new frontend's session, and its reply sent to
the new frontend. Message callbacks now carry the connection id, and
onFrontendMessageReceived drops messages from a connection that is no
longer current. The check and the enqueue run under the lifecycle mutex,
so a concurrent takeover's reset drops anything queued before it.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding "Reject messages from a connection after takeover" (InspectorServer.mm): valid, fixed in 32e8ee1. Message callbacks now carry the connection id, and onFrontendMessageReceived drops messages whose id is not the current connection. It checks and enqueues under frontendLifecycleMutex_, so a concurrent takeover's reset drops anything queued before it.

@edusperoni Verified in the current code. Message callbacks carry the connection ID, and onFrontendMessageReceived rejects messages from the previous connection. The shared frontendLifecycleMutex_ serializes message handling with takeover, whose reset clears pending messages from the previous connection. This addresses the finding.

Keep in-flight responses with their originating connection.

If connection A's Runtime.evaluate is already executing in dispatchMessage, connection B can replace sender_ before V8 emits the response. SendRawToFrontend then sends A's response to B. The connection-ID check and QueueSessionReset cannot remove a message that has already left the queue.

Associate in-flight responses with their originating connection, or complete old-session dispatch before exposing B's sender.

Serialize active-connection replacement on the accept path.

Each accepted connection currently activates on its own serial queue. The mutex serializes activation, but it does not preserve accept order. If connections A and B are accepted close together, B can activate first and then be closed when A activates.

Move active-connection replacement into the accept-source handler before dispatching connection-specific work. This keeps the newer accepted connection active.
