Description

This patch updates tests that required a unique axis label at an ambiguous 45-degree boundary. We moved the exact-label cases to 30 degrees.

We added tests that retain the 45-degree input and verify that voxel data and geometry are preserved.

Description supplied by the author in Portuguese and translated into English with AI assistance. Code assistance is attributed in the commit.

Types of changes

  • Non-breaking change.
  • New tests added to cover the changes.

Validation — tool-generated diagnostic summary

On dev 4f150a8f26664d1452a8e420d118f4541597f686, using Python 3.12 and CPU:

  • Before this patch: the orientation module ran 23 tests, with two failures under NiBabel 5.4.2; it passed under NiBabel 5.3.2.
  • After this patch: python -m unittest -v tests.transforms.test_orientation passed all 25 tests with both NiBabel 5.4.2 and 5.3.2, without skips.
  • Separate negative controls with deliberately incorrect affine origins or voxel references each failed the two new boundary tests.
  • Independent reference calculations were checked in C++23. Black, isort, Ruff, and git diff --check passed.

Only tests/transforms/test_orientation.py changes; production transforms and dependency bounds are unchanged. The full current-dev suite and GPU tests were not run for this standalone patch.

Move the exact-label fixtures to 30 degrees and retain the 45-degree input
in geometry tests that check complete voxel, shape, and affine references
for the two accepted nearest-axis assignments per target.

Independent reference calculations use C++23. Mathematical review completed
through Moonshot Kimi K3 and Google Gemini, with Gemini substituting for the
unavailable Grok review. Review limitations are retained in the private audit.

Walkthrough

The orientation tests add reference voxel layouts and affines for 45-degree oblique inputs in LPS and RAS conventions. Two existing test inputs now use a 30-degree rotation. A parameterized test checks that the 45-degree output matches an accepted layout and its corresponding affine.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: orientation test fixtures were made robust at the 45-degree boundary. It matches the raw summary and PR objectives, which describe moving exact-label cases to 30 degrees and adding 45-degree boundary tests. It is specific and single-sentence, with a conventional 'test:' prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Description section explaining the change to tests at the 45-degree boundary and the move of exact-label cases to 30 degrees. The Types of changes section is present, with the non-breaking change and new tests boxes checked. The 'Fixes #' issue reference is absent, and the other template checkboxes (integration tests, quick tests, docstrings, docs) are not addressed. These are non-critical for a test-only patch. The description also includes a validation summary beyond the template.

Add a docstring to the new test method.

Explain why the test accepts two boundary layouts. Document target and init_param in Google-style Args, and include the required return and exception sections. This keeps the reference-selection rule clear when the test changes. As per path instructions, “Docstrings should be present for all definition” and describe variables, return values, and raised exceptions in Google style.
