createMCPServer({ setup }) now receives the handle context of the request that builds the server. An extension handler can read the caller from that argument.

A spec 2025 session with sessions: 'memory' builds the server once. setup then keeps the context of the request that opened the session. A later request on that session does not run setup again. A tool on the later request sees the new context.

This branch is rebased onto current main. The extension setup from #1848 stays as it landed there. This PR only adds the context argument.

🎯 Changes

One createMCPServer answers every caller. server.handle(request, { context }) already gives that context to tools and resources. setup did not get it, so an extension handler could not read the caller.

  • setup(server, context) receives handleOptions.context, or undefined.
  • A one-argument setup still type-checks.
  • setup must stay synchronous. A returned promise still throws TypeError.

✅ Checklist

  • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
  • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
  • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
  • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
  • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run:

  • pnpm exec vitest run tests/server/create-server.test.ts -t "context of the request|opening context" in packages/ai-mcp. 2 passed.
  • pnpm test:pr was not run.
  • The Playwright spec testing/e2e/tests/mcp-typed.spec.ts was not run after the rebase.

Manual test:

  1. Run pnpm exec vitest run tests/server/create-server.test.ts -t "context of the request|opening context" in packages/ai-mcp.
  2. Make sure that both tests pass.
  3. The stateless test returns acme, then globex, from tenant/get.
  4. The memory-session test keeps acme on tenant/get after the next request uses globex. The tenant tool on that same request returns globex.

How this PR makes testing easy:

  • packages/ai-mcp/tests/server/create-server.test.ts has both cases.
  • testing/e2e/tests/mcp-typed.spec.ts expects notes/count to return tenant: 'acme' from the handle context.

Risk / rollback

Low. The new argument is additive. Revert the PR to undo it.

Public API change

Before

const server = createMCPServer({
  name: 'notes',
  version: '1.0.0',
  setup: (mcp) => {
    mcp.server.setRequestHandler('notes/count', { params: z.object({}) }, () => ({
      count: 0,
    }))
  },
})

After

const server = createMCPServer({
  name: 'notes',
  version: '1.0.0',
  setup: (mcp, context) => {
    const userId = context?.userId
    mcp.server.setRequestHandler('notes/count', { params: z.object({}) }, () => ({
      count: typeof userId === 'string' ? userId.length : 0,
    }))
  },
})

server.handle(request, { context: { userId } })

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • MCP server setup callbacks can now access the request context, including values used by extension handlers.
    • In-memory sessions use the context from the request that opened them. Setup runs once per session, while later tool calls receive the context from their own requests.
  • Documentation
    • Updated MCP guidance and examples to explain request context behavior for standard requests and in-memory sessions.

📝 Walkthrough

The MCP setup callback now receives the request context used to build the server. Tests and examples cover context propagation for stateless requests and spec 2025 memory sessions.

Changes: MCP setup context

Layer / File(s) Summary
Setup context propagation
packages/ai-mcp/src/server/create-server.ts, packages/ai-mcp/tests/server/create-server.test.ts, docs/mcp/server.md, packages/ai-mcp/skills/ai-mcp/SKILL.md, .changeset/ai-mcp-setup-context.md, docs/config.json
MCPServerOptions.setup accepts the McpServer and request context. buildMcpServer passes the app context to setup. Tests cover stateless requests and spec 2025 memory-session behavior. Documentation and the changeset describe the context behavior.
Typed context example
testing/e2e/src/lib/mcp-typed-server.ts, testing/e2e/src/routes/api.mcp-typed-test.ts, testing/e2e/tests/mcp-typed.spec.ts
The typed server includes the tenant from setup context in its notes/count response. The response schema and end-to-end expectation include the tenant.

A server can serve an [MCP extension](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/extensions/overview), with methods that `MCPClient` has no helper for. Call them with `mcp.request`. It takes the same arguments as the SDK `Client.request`.

1. Declare the extension in `clientOptions.capabilities.extensions`. A server uses an extension only when the client declares it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not describe client advertisement as a server-side guard.

The server in packages/ai-mcp/tests/client.test.ts serves greetings/get to a client that does not declare the extension. A reader could incorrectly rely on client advertisement to restrict access. State that the declaration communicates client support. Tell server authors to enforce any required access or opt-in check in the handler. (blog.modelcontextprotocol.io)

setup(server, context) now gets the handleOptions.context of the
request that builds the server. One createMCPServer serves many
callers, so an extension handler or an instrumentation hook can read
the caller from the request instead of from shared state. A spec 2025
session with sessions: 'memory' gets the context of the request that
opened it.

Thanks. Rebased onto main, kept the synchronous setup guard, and checked that a spec 2025 memory session keeps the opener's context while a later tool call sees the new handle context.
