A host can save the server/discover result of an MCPClient and pass it back as createMCPClient({ prior }). The next connect then skips the server/discover request. This saves one round trip per connect for hosts that open a new client for each request.

🎯 Changes

Why: the author's agent runs in a serverless worker and opens a new MCPClient to the same server for each run. On protocol 2026-07-28, each connect sends server/discover before the first real request.

 • createMCPClient({ prior }) passes prior to the SDK Client.connect(transport, { prior }). The type is the SDK PriorDiscovery.
 • MCPClient.getDiscoverResult() returns the SDK Client.getDiscoverResult(). It is undefined on a protocol 2025-11-25 server. It is a required member, like request from feat(ai-mcp): serve and call MCP extensions with createMCPServer setup and MCPClient.request #1848. Both ship in the same minor.
 • DiscoverResult and PriorDiscovery are exported as types from @tanstack/ai-mcp.
 • Docs: "Skip the discover request" in docs/tools/mcp-manual.md. The sample keys the saved result by token and expires it. The package skill is updated too.
 • Minor changeset for @tanstack/ai-mcp.

Behavior to know:

 • With prior, connect sends no request. A dead server or a revoked token fails on the first call, not on connect.
 • A prior with no shared protocol version throws MCPConnectionError before any request.
 • getInfo() does not keep prior, so app call handler reconnects run server/discover again.

✅ Checklist

 • I have followed the steps in the Contributing guide.
 • I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
 • I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.
 • Docs: I updated docs/ for this change, or this change is not user-facing.
 • Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.

🚀 Release Impact

 • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
 • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Testing

Commands run:

 • The author ran pnpm test:pr and the MCP e2e specs on the first commit.
 • After the merge with main and the review fixes (b91d0ba): pnpm test:types in packages/ai-mcp passed. vitest run tests/client.test.ts tests/apps/call-handler.test.ts -t "discover|prior" passed (6 tests). kiira check docs/tools/mcp-manual.md passed. The full test:pr and the e2e suite were not run locally. CI runs them.

Manual test:

 1. In packages/ai-mcp, run pnpm exec vitest run tests/client.test.ts -t "discover|prior". Expect the skip, bad prior, and 2025 tests to pass.
 2. In client.ts, change impl.connect(transport, options.prior) to impl.connect(transport, undefined). Run step 1 again. Expect the skip test to fail.
 3. Run pnpm --filter @tanstack/ai-e2e test:e2e -- --grep "skips server/discover". Expect firstDiscovers: 1 and nextDiscovers: 0.

How this PR makes testing easy:

 • Unit tests in packages/ai-mcp/tests/client.test.ts count JSON-RPC methods through an injected fetch.
 • The e2e test "a client with a saved discover result as prior skips server/discover" in testing/e2e/tests/mcp-typed.spec.ts counts server/discover requests on a real server.

Risk / rollback

Low. Without prior, connect works as before. A hand-rolled MCPClient must add getDiscoverResult, the same as request from #1848. Revert the PR to undo.

Public API change

Before

// Each connect sends server/discover first.
const mcp = await createMCPClient({ transport })

After

const first = await createMCPClient({ transport })
const discover = first.getDiscoverResult()

const next = await createMCPClient({
 transport,
 prior: discover ? { kind: 'modern', discover } : undefined,
})

MCPClient.getDiscoverResult() returns the spec 2026-07-28
server/discover result of the connection. createMCPClient({ prior })
passes a saved result to the SDK Client.connect, so a host that
connects to the same server many times skips the discover round trip.
DiscoverResult and PriorDiscovery are exported as types.

📝 Walkthrough

The MCP client now accepts a saved discovery result during connection setup and exposes the discovery result for a connection. Client and end-to-end tests cover reuse without a repeated discovery request and a subsequent tool call.

Changes: MCP discovery result reuse

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose and wire discovery reuse
packages/ai-mcp/src/types.ts, packages/ai-mcp/src/index.ts, packages/ai-mcp/src/client.ts, docs/tools/mcp-manual.md, packages/ai-mcp/skills/ai-mcp/SKILL.md, .changeset/ai-mcp-prior-discover.md, docs/config.json
MCPClientOptions accepts a prior discovery result. The client exposes getDiscoverResult() and forwards prior data to the SDK. Documentation and the changeset describe reuse and its constraints.
Validate discovery reuse
packages/ai-mcp/tests/client.test.ts, packages/ai-mcp/tests/apps/call-handler.test.ts, testing/e2e/src/routes/api.mcp-typed-test.ts, testing/e2e/tests/mcp-typed.spec.ts
Client and end-to-end tests verify that prior discovery data is adopted without another server/discover request and that a tool call succeeds. Tests also cover unsupported prior protocol versions and clients with no discovery result.

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago; * On a 2026-07-28 connection the cacheable verbs honour the server-stamped `ttlMs` / `cacheScope` (SEP-2549) and may return a still-fresh cached entry without a round trip. ... New exported types `ConnectOptions` (extends `RequestOptions` with `prior?: PriorDiscovery`) and `PriorDiscovery` — a cached era verdict: the modern arm wraps a `DiscoverResult` (zero round trips), the legacy arm (`{ kind: 'legacy' }`) skips the probe and runs the plain `initialize` handshake for servers known to be pre-2026.
Expose `sessionId` only after the first request has been sent.
 * The typed verbs dispatch after async pre-work. `Protocol.request()` itself still hands the frame to the transport before its first `await` (v1-compatible). The typed verbs on top of it — `callTool()` and the cacheable list verbs — perform async work first (header-mirroring scan, response-cache freshness, output-validator resolution), so an abort fired in the same tick can land before the frame is ever sent: the call rejects with `SdkError(RequestTimeout, reason)` and no `notifications/cancelled` is emitted (nothing was in flight). v1 sent the frame synchronously from these verbs. Once the frame is on the wire, aborting still sends `notifications/cancelled` before rejecting.
 * Protocol-version pinning is a first-class option. `ProtocolOptions.supportedProtocolVersions` pins the legacy `initialize` handshake: the first pre-2026 entry in the list is offered (list order is preference order), a counter-offer is accepted only if it is one of the list's pre-2026 entries, and a list with no pre-2026 entry makes the handshake throw. Under `versionNegotiation: 'auto'` the modern probe candidates are the list's modern entries when it has any (otherwise the SDK's default modern set); a `{ pin }` is honored as given and is not checked against the list (see support-2026-07-28.md). v1 had no public equivalent (`SUPPORTED_PROTOCOL_VERSIONS` was a fixed constant) — replace any workaround that patched the offered version with this option.
 * Also unchanged: HTTP 405 tolerances. A `405` answering the standalone GET stream open is benign (the client proceeds without the stream), and a `405` answering the session DELETE resolves `terminateSession()` normally — stateless-topology servers that decline both verbs keep working without changes, as in v1.

## Enhancements

### Automatic JSON Schema validator selection by runtime

The SDK auto-selects the validator: Node.js → AJV; Cloudflare Workers (workerd) → `@cfworker/json-schema`. Cloudflare Workers users can remove explicit `jsonSchemaValidator` configuration. You don't need to install `ajv`, `ajv-formats`, or `@cfworker/json-schema` for the default path. To customize the built-in backend, import the named class from the explicit subpath (`@modelcontextprotocol/{client,server}/validators/ajv` or `…/cf-worker`) — importing from a subpath means the corresponding peer dep must be in your `package.json`.

### `Client.connect(transport, { prior })` — connect from a cached era verdict

Probe once, persist `client.getDiscoverResult()` (`JSON.stringify`), and feed it to every worker as `client.connect(transport, { prior: { kind: 'modern', discover } })`. Freshness is the supplying host's responsibility — date cached legacy verdicts in your own storage and stop supplying them past your policy horizon (a stale one succeeds silently against an upgraded server).

* Gateway / distributed-client pattern: probe once, persist the

*

* 1. A "bootstrap" client connects with `versionNegotiation: { mode: 'auto' }`

* 2. The result is `JSON.stringify`-ed (the "persist" step — in a real gateway

* you would write this to Redis, a config map, or a process-local cache).

* 3. Three fresh worker clients connect with

* `connect(transport, { prior: { kind: 'modern', discover: JSON.parse(persisted) } })`:

* each connect() sends nothing on the wire, and `callTool` works immediately.

* 4. The server's `request_count` tool proves it: after three worker connects

* the count is unchanged (no extra discover/initialize from the workers).

*

* **Security:** the persisted advertisement is what the server returned for the

* bootstrap client's credential. Only reuse it across workers that present the

Enforce discovery-result freshness before reuse.

Client.connect(..., { prior }) leaves freshness enforcement to the host. This example passes saved after its ttlMs expires, and saved ??= never replaces an existing result. A stale discovery result can therefore be reused indefinitely after the server changes.

Update the connect function’s prior discovery reuse to enforce saved-result
freshness using a savedAt timestamp and each result’s ttlMs; pass prior only
while the cached result remains valid, then refresh saved and savedAt from
mcp.getDiscoverResult?.() after connecting instead of using nullish assignment.

Resolve conflicts with TanStack#1848 (MCPClient.request) by keeping both sides.

Review fixes:
- getDiscoverResult is required on MCPClient (request already made the
 interface break hand-rolled clients); drop the ?.() calls.
- Pass prior straight to Client.connect.
- Docs sample keys the saved result by token with its own max age; drop
 ttlMs/cacheScope wording (not on the DiscoverResult type); say that
 connect with prior sends no request.
- E2E counts server/discover requests and asserts the second connect
 sends none.
- Unit tests: a prior with no shared version throws MCPConnectionError
 before any request; a spec 2025 server has no discover result.

Thanks @argjentsahiti! Checked against the SDK 2.1.0 prior/getDiscoverResult API; I merged main, made getDiscoverResult required, keyed the docs cache by token, and added tests that prove the skip and that a bad prior fails as MCPConnectionError.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove expired token-keyed cache entries.

If tokens rotate or users accumulate, saved retains every bearer token and its result after the five-minute reuse window ends. A long-lived host retains those credentials indefinitely and grows the map without a bound. Evict entries when their lifetime ends; checking age only when the same token returns does not remove abandoned entries.

Keep getDiscoverResult optional on MCPClient.

This required member makes existing hand-written MCPClient implementations fail type-checking. The PR objective explicitly preserves those implementations by making the accessor optional. Make the interface member optional, and update typed callers to use optional chaining. (github.com)

Qualify the request-free connection claim.

If a modern server advertises tools.listChanged, connect() subsequently awaits #listenForToolListChanges(). That method opens a subscriptions/listen request and waits for its acknowledgement. A modern prior therefore skips server/discover but does not always remove a connection-time round trip. State this limitation in the API documentation and the new examples.
