0.37.0 - Colored emojis! 🚀

egui is an easy-to-use immediate mode GUI for Rust that runs on both web and native.

Try it now: https://www.egui.rs/

egui development is sponsored by Rerun, a startup building an SDK for visualizing streams of multimodal data.

Highlights ✨

Emoji and glyph support

egui can now render any glyph that is supported on your system, including colored emojis and non-Latin scripts.

To enable this, the integration has to use one of two APIs:

  • Context::add_glyph_rasterizer(GlyphRasterizer): a GlyphRasterizer renders a single glyph. eframe uses this on web to render individual glyphs to an off-screen canvas #8490, #8545.
  • Context::add_font_provider(Arc<dyn FontProvider>): lets egui find and load whole fonts at runtime. Native eframe uses this through the new egui_system_font_provider crate, which lists system fonts with fontique #8512.

Completion popup

We've added a new CompletionPopup widget that adds autocomplete to a TextEdit. You can use it e.g. to add emoji selection like in discord:

Screen.Recording.2026-10-15.at.16.05.41.mov

Experimental theme customizations

This release adds a theme plugin system #8153 by @AdrienZianne. Enable the new experimental feature flag, and there will be a new StyleProvider trait, which can be used to customize visuals for a widget based on the provided classes.

/// Implement the trait for each Widget you'd like to customize
impl StyleProvider<ButtonStyle> for MyTheme {
  fn style(&mut self, args: &StyleArgs<'_>) -> ButtonStyle {
    // You could construct ButtonStyle from scratch, or extend eguis built in style:
    let mut style: ButtonStyle = DefaultStyle.style(args);
    if args.has_class("primary") {
      style.atom_layout.frame.fill = hex_color!("#FF0000");
    }
    style
  }
}
/// Register all your custom style providers
fn init(ctx: &Context) {
ctx.add_widget_theme::<ButtonStyle>(MyTheme);
</tr></table>

Record videos of integration tests

Reading an integration test to understand what its doing can be challenging, so we've added a egui_kittest/video feature that records a mp4 video from it, using ffmpeg! Enable it and pass EGUI_KITTEST_RECORD=1 or EGUI_KITTEST_RECORD=open, and a video of the test will be recorded. This is an example from one of our more complex rerun integration tests:

Updates egui-elegance from 0.16.2 to 0.17.2

Release notes

Sourced from egui-elegance's releases.

v0.17.2

Adds lenient loading for Dock layouts.

Dock

  • DockLayout::deserialize_lenient loads a saved layout while dropping tabs that no longer deserialize, such as a tab variant the app has since removed, instead of failing the whole layout. No placeholder tab type is needed. Errors in the layout's own structure still fail.
    #[derive(Deserialize)]
    struct State {
        #[serde(deserialize_with = "DockLayout::deserialize_lenient")]
        dock: DockLayout<Tab>,
    }
    It needs a self-describing format such as JSON or RON. The default Deserialize is unchanged.

Released on crates.io: https://crates.io/crates/egui-elegance/0.17.2

PRs: #36

Full changelog: https://github.com/matrix-research-inc/egui-elegance/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md

v0.17.1

Adds Dock, tabbed split panes.

Dock

  • Drag tabs to reorder them, move them between panes, or drop them on a pane edge to split it. Drag gutters to resize.
  • Tabs are your own type, such as an enum carrying data, held in a DockLayout<T> that serializes with the serde feature. A DockViewer supplies each tab's label, content and optional context menu.
    #[derive(Clone, PartialEq, Eq, Hash)]
    enum Tab { Files, Editor(PathBuf), Console }
    impl DockViewer for Viewer {
    type Tab = Tab;
    fn tab(&mut self, tab: &Tab) -> DockTab { /* label, icon, closable, ... / }
    fn ui(&mut self, ui: &mut Ui, tab: &Tab) { / content */ }
    }
    Dock::new("dock").show(ui, &mut layout, &mut viewer);

  • Crowded tab strips shrink tabs down to min_tab_width, then scroll, fading at ends with hidden tabs, and offer a menu of every tab. Truncated labels show in full on hover.
  • Scrolling content: DockTab::scroll(true) wraps a tab's content in a scroll area.
  • Lenient loading: DockLayout::retain and filter_map drop or convert tabs, so a saved layout that names tabs the app no longer has can load with those tabs dropped instead of failing.

Released on crates.io: https://crates.io/crates/egui-elegance/0.17.1

PRs: #32, #34, #35

v0.17.0

Moves to egui 0.37, scopes widget id salts to their parent, and adds icon + text buttons.

Changelog

Sourced from egui-elegance's changelog.

0.17.2 — 2026-10-26

Added

  • DockLayout::deserialize_lenient loads a saved layout while skipping tabs that no longer deserialize, for use directly or via #[serde(deserialize_with = ...)]. Needs a self-describing format (JSON, RON).

0.17.1 — 2026-10-26

Added

  • Dock for tabbed split panes: drag tabs to reorder, move between panes, or drop on an edge to split; drag gutters to resize. Tabs are your own type (e.g. an enum carrying data) held in a serializable DockLayout<T> (optional serde feature); a DockViewer supplies labels, content and an optional per-tab context menu. Crowded tab strips scroll, fade at ends with hidden tabs and offer a menu of every tab; min_tab_width/max_tab_width set how far tabs shrink first. Truncated labels show in full on hover, and tabs can opt into scrolling their content. DockLayout::retain and filter_map drop or convert tabs, e.g. to load a saved layout that names tabs the app no longer has.

0.17.0 — 2026-10-21

Breaking

  • Targets egui 0.37, so your app must move to 0.37 as well.
  • Id salts are scoped, so the same salt can be reused under different parents. Widgets shown in a Ui scope it with the Ui; Popover, Menu, and ContextMenu scope it with their trigger. Modal and Drawer salts stay app-wide.
  • Popover::popup_id(salt) is now Popover::popup_id(trigger.id, salt).
  • Emoji need a font now. egui 0.37 no longer bundles emoji fonts, so emoji passed to elegance widgets (e.g. .icon("🔔")) render as empty boxes. Enable egui's monochrome_emoji_fonts feature or eframe's system_fonts, or switch to the bundled glyphs.

Added

  • Button::icon_text(glyph, label) draws one of the bundled glyphs before the label, at the same height as a text button of the same size.

Changed

  • IdSalt is now an alias of egui's equivalent AsIdSalt trait. Code that uses it as a bound is unaffected.
  • Select is 1pt taller, because egui's ComboBox now shares Button's layout.

Fixed

  • flash_success / flash_error not tinting a non-revealable TextInput or a TextArea under egui 0.37.
  • ColorPicker's hex field now has an accessible name.
  • TagInput and RemovableChip keep their placeholders vertically centered under egui 0.37.

Updates rust_xlsxwriter from 0.100.0 to 0.101.0

Changelog

Sourced from rust_xlsxwriter's changelog.

[0.101.0] - 2026-10-21

Changed

  • Breaking change: Changed XlsxError::TempFileError(String) error that was added in the previous release to XlsxError::TempFileError(PathBuf, std::io::Error) so that the temporary directory and the underlying io::Error are available to the caller. The io::Error is also returned by Error::source(). See [Issue #213].

    [Issue #213]: jmcnamara/rust_xlsxwriter#213

Added

  • Also added Error::source() support for the XlsxError::IoError, XlsxError::ZipError and XlsxError::PolarsError variants. This allows the underlying cause, such as the io::Error in a ZipError::Io error, to be accessed via the standard error source chain.
Commits
  • 7d7a2ad release: 0.101.0
  • 681c38d error: add source() to errors that wrap other errors
  • 3d6baed error: reworked TempFileError to include the path and error
