perf(sync): gate synthesized-edge refresh to edits that can affect it - #580
An incremental sync marked every changed file synthesis-dirty, so a one-line comment edit re-ran whole-graph callback synthesis. On the discourse corpus that made codegraph sync 1.64 s / 654 MB peak where the disabled-refresh floor measured 0.93 s / 446 MB.
A changed file now dirties synthesis only when it can actually feed or invalidate a pass:
it already carries synthesized wiring — an endpoint in the file, or a registeredAt naming it (one memoized bulk query per sync rather than one edges scan per file);
its last-seen content fed a pass — a new synthesis_inputs table recorded after each completed run, checked while the file row still exists, so removals and pattern-dropping edits on an already-collapsed channel still refresh;
its new content matches a pass's input pattern — the ported hasSynthesisPattern plus markup-capable extensions and barrel-shaped files (what lazy()/tag-module resolution can reach);
its definition delta adds a JSX-renderable name an unchanged file's tag may name.
Two retention fixes land with it: synthesisRuns now increments on the direct resynthesize path too (it only counted batched runs), and refreshSynthesis drops the emitted edge array plus the resolver's warm caches after reconcile — the daemon's idle heap no longer holds a whole-graph working set after a watcher sync.
Measurement
Discourse sync after a benign boot.rb comment edit: 0.75–1.26 s at ~480 MB peak (was 1.64 s / 654 MB) — at the disabled-refresh floor.
An incremental sync marked every changed file synthesis-dirty, so a
one-line comment edit re-ran whole-graph callback synthesis. On the
discourse corpus that made `codegraph sync` 1.64 s / 654 MB peak where
disabling the refresh entirely measured 0.93 s / 446 MB.
A changed file now dirties synthesis only when it can actually feed or
invalidate a pass:
- it already carries synthesized wiring — endpoints in the file, or a
`registeredAt` naming it (one memoized bulk query per sync, not one
edges scan per file);
- its last-seen content fed a pass — the new synthesis_inputs table,
recorded after each completed run, is checked while the file row
still exists so removed files and pattern-dropping edits on an
already-collapsed channel still refresh;
- its new content matches a pass's input pattern — the ported
hasSynthesisPattern plus markup-capable extensions and barrel-shaped
files, which is what lazy()/tag-module resolution can reach;
- its definition delta adds a JSX-renderable name an unchanged file's
tag may name.
Two retention fixes land with it: `synthesisRuns` increments on the
direct-resynthesize path too (it only counted batched runs before), and
refreshSynthesis now drops the emitted edge array and the resolver's
warm caches once rows are reconciled — the daemon's idle heap no longer
holds a whole-graph working set after a watcher sync.
Measured on discourse: a benign edit syncs in 0.75-1.26 s at ~480 MB
peak (was 1.64 s / 654 MB), matching the disabled-refresh floor.
Tests cover the skip path, pattern/removal/JSX-delta triggers, and the
existing convergence suite passes including the fan-out-cap restore.

Walkthrough
The changes add synthesis-input tracking and use it to select files for resynthesis during sync. They also add tests and evaluation records, and clear emitted-edge and resolver caches after synthesis reconciliation.
A new table records synthesis input paths. Queries check input membership and synthesized-edge ownership, and transactionally replace the recorded input set.
Detect and record synthesis inputs src/resolution/tier-synthesizer.ts, src/resolution/callback-synthesizer.ts, src/resolution/index.ts
New helpers identify files that may feed synthesis and collect readable inputs. Synthesis passes record the collected paths.

Sync marks files for refresh based on synthesized-edge ownership, prior input status, eligible content, or changed JSX child definitions. Tests cover skipped and triggered resynthesis. Evaluation records contain passing Svelte and Vite cases. Refresh clears the emitted-edge buffer and resolver caches.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: High · previous review 98142
Users who upgrade with an existing index will not get the new synthesis_inputs table, so incremental sync can fail until the schema version is bumped to 23. Separately, the new refresh gate may skip Ruby Jobs.enqueue edits and leave job edges missing after sync. Fix the schema version before merging.

Include Jobs.enqueue calls in the synthesis gate.
If an otherwise ordinary Ruby method changes to call Jobs.enqueue(:cleanup), none of these patterns selects its file. The file has no previous synthesis input or synthesized edge to select it either. sidekiqDispatchEdges recognizes that call, but sync skips the pass and leaves the new job edge absent. Include the Jobs.enqueue, Jobs.enqueue_in, and Jobs.enqueue_at forms in the input gate. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

An existing v22 database never ran migration 23, leaving wasSynthesisInput
to query a missing table — CodeRabbit #580. Also cover the Jobs.enqueue /
enqueue_in / enqueue_at and Sidekiq::Client.push dispatch forms in the
input gate.
import/export lines made every type-only barrel a synthesis input —
n8n's `export type` index paid a full resynthesis upstream correctly
skips. Only `export {X} from` / `export *` lines count now; type-only
re-exports and local definitions drop out (the definition delta already
covers those).

* perf(sync): index the synthesis-touch check through edges.provenance
The gate added in #580 pays its check on every sync: the bulk
filesTouchingSynthesizedEdges() scanned all edges twice with a
per-row json_extract (~1.98 s on n8n's 1.2M-edge table), and the
per-file registeredAt leg was an unindexed full scan (~135 ms).
'n8n watchSync' measured the cost: fork ~1.9 s vs upstream ~0.97 s.
provenance='heuristic' is a strict superset of synthesizedBy edges,
so a provenance predicate narrows every leg through
idx_edges_provenance (~22k rows) before json_extract: bulk 1978->32ms,
per-file leg 135->4ms, same result set (3001 files verified equal on
the n8n db). Small syncs (<=64 checked files) now also take the
per-file indexed probes instead of building the bulk set at all.
