Package Change Age Confidence
@wordpress/block-library (source) 10.5.0 → 12.0.0 age confidence

Release Notes

WordPress/gutenberg (@wordpress/block-library)

v12.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Raise the minimum required Node.js version to >=22.13.0, for stable require(esm) support (#84313).
Enhancements
  • Term Count: Reuse filtered terms from Term Template so changes made through the get_terms filter appear on the front end without a separate query for each count (#84119).
  • Query: List the existing terms in the taxonomy filters, so categories and tags can be browsed and selected instead of recalled and typed. The controls now use SearchableChipSelectControl from @wordpress/ui (#82583).
  • Icon: Speed up loading icons in the icon library (#84327).
  • Video: Don't autoplay on the front end when the visitor prefers reduced motion (#84308).
  • Cover: Stop an uploaded background video on the front end when the visitor prefers reduced motion (#83853).
  • Image: Animate touch-swipe navigation in the gallery lightbox so the image follows the finger and slides off on commit, with a quick fade-in for the next image (#79114).
  • Post Navigation Link: Add background image, size, and gradient support, withheld from the empty wrapper the same way as border, shadow and spacing (#83940).
  • Post Title: Add Fit text support, so the title can resize to fill its container (#83036).
Bug Fixes
  • Media & Text: Replace deprecated word-break: break-word and prevent long content from widening the text column. Nested blocks that only override word-break can now wrap long unbroken text mid-word (#82580).
  • Accordion Heading: Anchor notes to the selected title text instead of the whole block (#84497).
  • Navigation: Keep the flex layout on a Navigation block inserted into a navigation overlay, so block spacing applies to it (#82232).
  • Cover: Decode the oEmbed iframe source before parsing it, so an embedded background video keeps the parameters the provider sent (#83770).
  • Search: Show the button's full focus outline when the search field is collapsed (#84685).
  • Login/out: Mark the block as content with the contentRole support, so it stays listed, movable, and insertable in content-only editing, including a locked navigation menu (#84849).
  • Navigation Link: Apply the "Open in new tab" setting from the link popover. Clicking Apply dropped the change, so the setting could only be changed from the block settings sidebar. The Submenu block had the same problem (#83506).

v11.2.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Icon: Group the "All" tab of the icon library by collection, under a heading that stays at the top while scrolling, when more than one collection is registered.
  • Navigation Link: Search every entity type from the link UI instead of only the link's own type; so a category, tag or post can be added without needing to add that specific type's navigation link block (#83408).
  • Navigation Link: List the blocks a Navigation allows in the link UI search results, so typing "Home" finds the Home Link block (#83652).
  • Cover: Don't autoplay an embedded background video on the front end when the visitor prefers reduced motion. A new view module swaps the iframe source for one without the autoplay parameters (#83452).
  • Columns: Remove the column count slider from the block settings (#83262).
  • Avatar: Explain in the block settings that avatars use the Gravatar service, and link users who can manage settings to the Discussion settings where the default avatar is chosen (#83567).
  • Media & Text: Lower the specificity of the content area's default padding so themes can override it, including through the block's custom CSS in theme.json (#83563).
  • Gallery: Add an "Order by" sorting control to the static gallery mode, and consolidate sorting control for static and dynamic modes in the Settings panel (#83438).
  • Icon: Match an icon's keywords as well as its name and label when searching the icon library (#82367).
  • Button: Only open the link popover from the toolbar button or keyboard shortcut instead of whenever a linked button is selected. The toolbar button now shows a pressed state when a link is set (#30166).
  • Use the inertValue helper to set inert attributes, for better React 18/19 compatibility (#83871).
  • Image, Cover: Restore the previous attachment with snackbar Undo, including attachment-derived Image attributes while preserving Cover settings (#81805).
Bug Fixes
  • Custom HTML: Keep a block whose markup renders nothing in the editor, such as a script or an empty container a third-party script fills in, selectable. The block takes no space, as on the front end, and a marker floats next to it that selects the block when clicked (#84150).
  • Tag Cloud: Space the tags of the Outline style evenly. The base link margin outranked the style's own reset, so each tag carried that margin on top of the container's gap and the horizontal spacing did not match the spacing between rows (#70224).
  • Image: Stop a click on the enlarged image from closing the lightbox, so tapping the image to inspect it, or mis-tapping while reaching for Previous or Next, no longer dismisses it. The Close button, Escape and the area around the image still close the lightbox (#78898).
  • Math: Align the cells of aligned and cases, and draw \overline and \underline, in Chromium, in the Math block and in inline math. The rules key on the MathML attributes and only apply where the engine does not render them natively (#83164).
  • Image: Fix the lightbox being impossible to close when its overlay is not a direct child of <body> (#83480).
  • Image: Stop the lightbox from removing inert that a theme set on elements outside the overlay (#83480).
  • Image: Show the original image proportions in the lightbox and animate the thumbnail crop during zooming (#79058).
  • Template Part: Fall back to the theme's template part file and report the error with wp_trigger_error() when the customized template part can't be loaded, instead of rendering nothing and logging an Undefined property: WP_Error::$content warning (#83809).
  • Post Featured Image: Do not wrap the media placeholder in a post link when isLink comes from the template, so adding a featured image no longer crashes the editor (#81584).
  • Image: Percent-encode the inline SVG in the circle-mask style's mask-image, and drop the malformed ;utf8 media type parameter, so audit tools no longer report the data URI as an invalid url() value (#82333).
Internal
  • Playlist: Update @arraypress/waveform-player to ^1.27.0 and import its no-autoinit entry, replacing the dependency patch (#83132).

v11.1.0

Compare Source

Enhancements
  • Site Tagline: Add Fit text support (#83034).
  • Post Navigation Link: Add border and spacing support. The block renders an empty wrapper when there is no adjacent post, so both supports skip serialization and the styles are applied only when a link renders (#83122).
  • Post Navigation Link: Add shadow support, withheld from the empty wrapper the same way (#83058).
  • Icon: Don't render icons from non-public icon collections on the front end, since they aren't available in the editor anyway (#82774).
Bug Fixes
  • Image: The resize box no longer takes the pointer from the image while the block is selected, so the image has its context menu and is the source of a drag by it; the resize handles are unaffected (#72983).
  • Navigation: Stop the flyout min-width from applying to always-open submenus. Hovering, focusing or selecting an item in a vertical menu with submenus set to always show forced its inline submenu to at least 200px and made the menu re-wrap (#83142).
  • Math: Read the LaTeX source from the <annotation> inside the saved <math> instead of the block comment, so & and < survive wp_kses for users without unfiltered_html. Input that cannot be rendered is saved as an annotation-only <semantics>, which browsers display as the source text (#82987).
  • Image: Inject the lightbox trigger with a literal string replacement instead of preg_replace, so $ and \ sequences in author-controlled image attributes (such as a price in the alt text) are no longer interpreted as regex backreferences and silently removed (#79369).
  • Cover: Grow the block with its content in Safari when an aspect ratio is set, instead of clipping the overflow. WebKit locks the box to the ratio where other engines let content expand it (#70152).
  • Query Pagination: Remove the editor-only margin: 0 override on the block wrapper so the parent layout's block gap applies in the canvas as it does on the front end (#82399).
  • Navigation: Reset the submenu detection for each rendered block. Once a Navigation with a submenu rendered, every Navigation rendered afterwards in the same request was treated as having one and loaded the navigation view module it does not need (#82366).
  • Gallery: Skip the generated gap styles, and the unique classname that scopes them, for themes opting out of layout styles via add_theme_support( 'disable-layout-styles' ) (#81633).
  • Term Name: Apply the term name display filters when rendering, so adjustments plugins make to term names take effect and the name is escaped in the heading and link markup (#82365).
Internal
  • Button: Replace deprecated word-break: break-word with word-break: normal and overflow-wrap: anywhere to clear the Stylelint suppression (#82854).

v11.0.0

Compare Source

Breaking Changes
  • Remove the experimental Form, Input Field, Form Submit Button, and Form Submission Notification blocks, along with the "Form and input blocks" experiment that gated them.
Enhancements
  • Navigation Link: emit @wordpress/ui Badge intents for the link preview badges, replacing the private @wordpress/components Badge vocabulary. Draft, Scheduled and Pending previously shared one warning intent; Draft and Pending now read as low and Scheduled as informational (#82684).
  • Math: Declare interactivity.clientNavigation support. The block's front end output is static markup, and without the declaration a Math block inside a Query block forced full page reloads on pagination (#82248).
  • Paragraph, List, Heading, Preformatted, Columns, Group, Template Part: Read the default padding these blocks add when they have a background color from the --wp--style--block-background-padding custom property, so themes can change or remove it (#82024).
  • Query: Show a snackbar notice instead of a blocking modal when "Reload full page" is turned on automatically because a block inside the Query block doesn't support client-side navigation (#82246).
  • Gallery: Support viewport-specific aspect ratios, in every Gallery layout and in dynamic galleries. (#82233)
Bug Fixes
  • Navigation: Give the block appender an explicit width so it renders square, matching the appender in other container blocks (#82718).
  • Footnotes: Prefix newly created footnote IDs with fn- so they always start with a letter. A bare UUID often starts with a digit, and an ID that does is not a valid CSS identifier, so querySelector( '#' + id ) threw and #id style rules never matched. Existing footnotes keep their IDs (#82398).
  • Navigation: Restore flex-grow on the menu container in the editor, where the visually hidden menu description breaks the :only-child selector the front end relies on, so the "Space between" and other justification settings apply in the canvas as they do on the front end (#78447).
  • Image: Fix cropped galleries rendering images at their natural height in the editor canvas. The baseline inline height: auto is no longer emitted for images inside a cropped gallery, so the gallery's own cropping CSS applies (#82318).
  • Tabs: Activate the tab that a URL hash points into, so an anchor set on a block inside a tab panel can be reached. Anchor links followed after the page has loaded are handled too, matching the Accordion block (#81744).
  • Accordion Panel: Reset padding-block when panel is hidden (#81782).
  • Query: Stop writing excludeCurrent: null into the query attribute of blocks that never had the key. The mount effect that clears a stale exclusion treated the absent key as stale, changing the serialized markup of every pre-existing Query block as soon as the editor opened it (#82147).
  • Icon: Preserve intrinsic SVG styles when applying block styles or rotation, and keep stroke widths scaling with the block's size for compatibility (#78808).
  • Image: Keep the selected image size, and re-point a media file or attachment page link, when an edit in the media editor saves to a new attachment. Cropping, rotating or flipping left the block rendering the full-size file while the size control still reported the size the user had chosen, and left the link pointing at the pre-edit image (#82316).
  • Query, Post Template: Treat a query attribute that omits postType as querying posts, matching build_query_vars_from_query_block() (#82465).
Internal
  • Search: Keep the editor's button icon fill-based and separate from @wordpress/icons so it matches the PHP renderer and existing theme fill styles. (#82338)
  • Remove unused dependencies @wordpress/keyboard-shortcuts, @wordpress/reusable-blocks and @wordpress/viewport (#82103).
  • Use the .jsx extension for JavaScript source files that contain JSX (#80990).
  • Remove tsconfig project references to packages that are not dependencies (#82106).
