Generate schemas in one merged, cached pass.

Description of your changes

Today, schemas are written into schemas/<lang>/ one source at a time. Each
source's output is copied on top of the tree, and nothing is ever removed.
The tree slowly goes stale, and the build never notices.

This issue resulted in workarounds as in modelplane modelplaneai/modelplane#170
where the schema directory is removed during every build, increasing build times.

This PR collects every source first, generates in two cached groups
(dependencies, and the project's own APIs), and swaps the finished tree
into place.

This work comes out of the TypeScript PR (#170) (which requires a single-pass
through the schema cache), and is broken out so that the TS-related changes are smaller.

Fixes #428.

What changes for users

You do this Before After
Rename or delete a kind in an XRD The old model stays forever It's removed
Remove a dependency All its models stay They're removed
Add a language Dependencies get no models for it They're generated
Remove a language, or delete schemas/<lang>/ The directory stays, or isn't regenerated It's removed, or rebuilt
project build with no changes apis/ regenerated every time (3.7s) Nothing regenerated (1.5s)
Edit an XRD apis/ regenerated (as on every build) Only the APIs are regenerated; dependency output comes from the cache
Edit a Composition, or other non-XRD YAML in apis/ apis/ regenerated (as on every build) Nothing regenerated
Delete or hand-edit a generated file A dependency's model stays deleted or edited until that dependency changes Restored from the cache on the next build, without running a generator
function generate in a fresh project Only apis/ schemas; dependency models missing until a separate project build Fetches dependencies itself and generates a complete tree; needs network on the first run, then uses the same caches

How it works

  • Two groups. Dependencies (including transitive xpkg dependencies) and
the project's APIs are each generated as a unit and cached in
schemas/.cache/<group>/. A stamp file records what each cache was made
from, and a group regenerates only when that changes. Each source is its
own generator run, and the runs go in parallel (bounded by CPU count).
A single combined run per group made cold builds three times slower than
main on projects with many providers, because datamodel-codegen is
    single-threaded; the per-source runs restore main's parallelism.
  • Safe swap. The tree is built in schemas/.staging/ and swapped in by
rename. If anything fails, the previous tree stays in place, including
when a swap fails halfway through.
  • New lock format. .lock.json is now version 2. It records the
languages, both groups' sources, and a generator fingerprint (the CLI
version plus each generator's image and options). An old or damaged lock
causes a regeneration instead of a failed build.
  • Lock file behavior:
    • Reading is forgiving. A missing, damaged, or unknown-version lock
reads as stale and the next build regenerates. The lock can never fail
a build, and deleting it is a supported way to force regeneration.
    • Freshness is per group. The tree matches the lock only if the
languages, the generator fingerprint, and both groups' source sets
(with versions) are unchanged, and every generated file is still on
disk unchanged (see the tree manifest below). A stale group regenerates
only that group's cache; the tree is then reassembled by merging the
      cached parts.
    • Writes are atomic and last. The lock is written to a temp file and
renamed into place after the tree swap succeeds. An interrupted write
can only leave a truncated temp file; the lock itself stays the old
one, describing the old tree, so the next run regenerates.
    • Upgrading from the old format causes a one-time full regeneration
(the old lock has no version; it reads as stale).
    • Downgrading is safe: an older CLI reading a v2 lock sees no
packages map, treats every source as stale, and regenerates
everything. No failure, no wrong output.
  • Every generated file is checked. Each assembly records the SHA-256
of every file it wrote in schemas/.cache/tree.json. Each pass checks
them, and reassembles the tree from the group caches if any is missing
or different. Reassembly runs no generator. Files added to the tree are
not checked, because tools write there: importing the Python models
creates __pycache__ directories. The record is kept out of the lock,
so projects that check schemas/ in don't commit a line per generated
    file.
  • Only API definitions count. The project's APIs source hands the
generators only XRD and CRD documents, and its version hashes exactly
those, with their paths. Editing a Composition no longer regenerates
the APIs group. A YAML document there that doesn't parse fails the
pass and names the file, as it did when the generators parsed every
    file themselves.
  • Conflicts are errors. If two parts produce the same file with
different content, the build fails with a message naming the file. When
the project's own APIs and a dependency disagree, it suggests removing
one of the definitions. Before, the last copy won without any message.
  • One write path. project build/run, render, dependency add,
dependency update-cache and function generate all run the same pass.
  • Run-level languages. A generator can implement schemaMerger to
combine parts whose root files describe the whole run. Rust is the first
(see below), and TypeScript (Project typescript support #170) is the next.

Generator fixes (first commit)

The merged pass compares shared files byte for byte, which exposed four
places where generators produced different output for the same input. All
four also affect main:

  • Go: constant names in io/k8s/authentication/v1 sometimes changed
between runs (about 1 in 5), because of random map order. They're now
    stable.
  • KCL: imports came out in random order. They're now sorted.
  • KCL: the OpenAPI path wrote kcl.mod with edition v0.10.0, while the
CRD path wrote v0.11.2. Both now use v0.11.2.
  • Python: each model's header named its input file, so shared models
differed by one line. That line is removed.

Adopted from #435

#435 takes a different approach to #428. These pieces of it fit this
design without any CLI change, so I've brought them over:

  • Per-file checks: see "Every generated file is checked" above. feat: Enhance schema generation and dependency handling #435
records per-file hashes in its lock. Here they live in the cache
directory instead, and files added to the tree are ignored, because
modelplane checks schemas/ in and has __pycache__ directories
    inside schemas/python/.
  • Definitions-only APIs hashing: see "Only API definitions count"
    above.
  • No empty JSON index: a project with no JSON schemas no longer gets an
    empty index.schema.json.

Rust (#374)

Rust support landed on main after this PR's base, so this PR is rebased
onto it and the Rust generator is fitted to the merged pass:

  • Rust is run-level. Each source's crate declares only its own
modules, in src/lib.rs, the mod.rs files and Cargo.toml. On
main the last source's copy wins, and the manager then rebuilds those
files. This pass rejects two different copies of a file, so any project
with more than one source failed with conflicting generated file models/Cargo.toml. The Rust generator now implements
MergeGeneratedSchemas: it copies every source's models, which must
match where two sources share one, and rebuilds the module tree once
    for the merged crate.
  • Run-level output is stripped of models/. Merged run-level output
kept the models/ prefix that every other language has removed, so the
crate landed in rust/models/. Assembly now strips it for run-level
    languages too.
  • Rust generator fingerprint: empty, since it runs in-process with no
    options.

Things reviewers should know

  • One-time regeneration: every project regenerates once after
upgrading, because the old lock format reads as stale. In a project that
checks schemas/ in, this shows up as a large one-time diff: in
modelplane, 1,133 Python files each lose their header line.
  • Small output changes:
    • Python models lose the # filename: header line;
    • an OpenAPI-only project's kcl.mod edition moves to v0.11.2.
  • Hand-placed files under schemas/<lang>/ are removed whenever the
tree is reassembled, which now also happens when a generated file was
deleted or edited. Between reassemblies they're left alone.
  • dependency add contacts the registry for every dependency, not just
the new one (about 1.5s for one dependency with a version range). The
tree has to describe the whole project, so it needs every dependency's
    version.
  • Two caches. The CLI already had a per-user package cache outside
    the project (os.UserCacheDir()/crossplane/xpkg, e.g.
~/Library/Caches/crossplane/xpkg on macOS): package downloads are
shared across projects, PullIfNotPresent style, and dependency clean-cache empties it. This PR adds a per-project output cache in
schemas/.cache/<group>/<lang>/: the generated schema trees each source
group produced, keyed by source versions and generator fingerprint. The
output cache holds a second copy of the tree, so schemas/ takes twice
the disk space; .cache/ and .staging/ each contain a .gitignore,
so projects that check schemas/ in don't pick them up. The two solve
different problems — one avoids re-downloading packages, the other
avoids re-running generators — and dependency clean-cache removes both.
Moving the output cache to the user cache directory is possible; I'd
    like your input.
  • Duplicate versions get a warning: if two dependencies resolve one
package to different versions, a warning names both.

Testing

Unit tests, with mock generators unless noted:

  • Regeneration rules:
    • an XRD edit regenerates only the APIs group;
    • a dependency change regenerates only the dependencies;
    • a language change, a removed dependency, a deleted language
directory, or a fingerprint change triggers regeneration.
  • Failure handling:
    • a failed generation, a failed swap, or a failure after one group
      finished leaves the previous tree correct;
    • a damaged or old lock regenerates instead of failing.
  • Conflicts and merging:
    • conflicts between groups, and within a group, report an error;
    • the merger runs both within and across groups.
  • Commands and sources:
    • a failed dependency add doesn't change the project file;
    • apis: . reads only the project's own YAML;
    • the duplicate-version warning;
    • readable error messages.
  • Generators (real code, not mocks): Go output is identical across
repeated runs; KCL imports are sorted; the kcl.mod edition matches the
image; the Python header is stripped.
  • Per-file checks and API definitions: an edited or deleted generated
file is restored without running a generator; an added file is left
alone; a missing manifest reassembles; Composition edits don't change
the APIs version, and moving an XRD to another file does.
  • Proven against old code: the regression tests for the stamp file,
in-group merging, the swap rollback, Go and KCL determinism, per-file
checks, definitions-only hashing and the empty JSON index fail on the
    previous code.
  • Rust: the real Rust generator on three sources, two of which share
a module, through the merged pass; and the Rust merger's own conflict
check. Without the merger the first fails with conflicting generated file models/Cargo.toml, and without the models/ fix rust/src/lib.rs
    is missing.
  • Review fixes: a YAML syntax error in an XRD fails, naming the file;
a conflict between the project's APIs and a dependency suggests removing
    one of the definitions.
  • Race detector: passes on the schema and dependency packages.

Manual testing, real generators (Go, JSON, KCL, Python; Docker images
already pulled). The project was function-auto-ready, k8s v1.35.0 and one
XRD, compared against main:

  • The tree has the same file paths as main, and shared files are
identical apart from the generator fixes above. The tree also contains
the XRD's models, which main's dependency add leaves out.
  • Removing the k8s dependency cleans the tree from 810 files to 47.
    main keeps all 810.
  • An XRD edit regenerates only the APIs group, and a node_modules change
    regenerates nothing.
  • Eight cold runs produced identical trees.
  • dependency add failures (unreachable URL, missing package, bad k8s
    version) leave crossplane-project.yaml unchanged.

Manual testing on modelplane
(13 providers plus their family providers, 16 dependency sources in all,
one git CRD source, about 14 XRDs; Python only):

  • Starting from modelplane's checked-in schemas/, the first build
regenerates once. git status then shows only the lock file and 1,133
Python files, each missing its # filename: line, and nothing else.
    .cache/ and .staging/ don't appear.
  • The tree is identical to main's regenerated output, apart from that
    header line.
  • No conflicts between the providers, and no duplicate-version warnings
(they all resolve to one version).
  • Per-file checks (with dependency update-cache, on 2,004 Python
    files):
    • a no-op pass takes as long as without them, 13-15s, almost all of it
      dependency resolution;
    • after python -m compileall, the 2,003 .pyc files are left alone;
    • a hand-edited model is restored byte for byte.
  • Composition edit: with this PR the APIs group isn't regenerated
(13.4s). Before the definitions-only change, it was (18.4s).
  • Rust (languages: [rust], rebased onto main): 2,203 files from
the 16 sources with no conflicts, in 15.7s. The tree is identical to
main's, except that this PR also generates the project's own XRDs:
src/ai/, plus its pub mod ai; line and two Cargo features.
cargo check --all-features compiles the merged crate.

Timing (median of three runs, Docker images already pulled):

main This PR
Small project: project build, no changes 3.7s 1.5s
Small project: project build after an XRD edit 3.5s 3.6s
Small project: dependency add, cold 6.8s 7.6s (also generates the XRD)
Small project: dependency add, no changes 0.1s 1.5s (registry calls)
modelplane: project build, cold 92s 94s
modelplane: project build, no changes 10.6s 10.3s
modelplane: project build after an XRD edit 8.8s 11.0s

The modelplane rows are single runs from 2026-10-15 (the small-project rows
are medians of three). The XRD-edit row is the PR's promised behavior in
action: only the APIs group regenerates and the 16 dependency sources come
from the cache; on main an XRD edit costs about the same only because
main regenerates apis/ on every build while caching dependencies
per source. In both branches a no-change build is dominated by registry
calls (16 packages, ~5s when warm, ~90s when the CLI's package cache is
cold), not schema generation.

A no-change modelplane build is almost all registry calls (16 packages),
so it doesn't get the small project's speedup. modelplane deletes schemas/ before every
build to work around the stale models (commit a3e9ba9), which makes every
build cold. It can drop that step once this lands.

Manual testing of render (the small project plus a Python function
from function generate that builds a Deployment from the XRD's model and
the k8s models):

  • The output is identical to main's.
  • A no-change re-render regenerates nothing (stamps and lock untouched).
  • Renaming an XRD field regenerates only the APIs group. The model gets the
new field, the old one is gone, and the function builds against it.

Not tested yet:

  • project run with real generators;
  • a first run with no images pulled;
  • TypeScript, which is covered when Project typescript support #170 is rebased onto this PR. Its
commit applies cleanly on top, its tests pass (including the Docker
test), and a project with several dependencies per group compiles with
    tsc.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR collects dependency and project API sources before schema generation. It adds grouped caching and generator fingerprints, makes output deterministic in several generators, and updates project build and function-generation paths to use the combined sources.

Changes: Schema generation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source collection and dependency traversal
internal/schemas/manager/source.go, internal/schemas/manager/source_test.go, internal/dependency/manager.go, internal/dependency/manager_test.go
Filesystem API sources filter eligible YAML resources and exclude configured project directories. The dependency manager collects direct and transitive sources, reuses fetched packages, and reports multiple resolved versions.
Generator fingerprints and output consistency
internal/schemas/generator/*
Generators expose fingerprints for output-affecting configuration. Go and KCL generation use sorted output order. KCL uses its pinned image edition. Python finalization removes generated filename headers.
Grouped schema cache and assembly
internal/schemas/manager/lock.go, internal/schemas/manager/manager.go, internal/schemas/manager/manager_test.go, internal/schemas/generator/rust.go, internal/schemas/generator/rust_merge_test.go
The schema manager caches dependency and API groups separately. Freshness checks include source versions, languages, and generator fingerprints. It assembles language trees, merges Rust outputs, handles conflicting generated files, and writes a versioned lock.
Build and function-generation integration
internal/project/build.go, cmd/crossplane/function/generate.go
Project builds and function schema generation pass collected dependency sources and project APIs to combined schema generation. Function generation constructs a dependency manager from project configuration and a package client.

Schema generation now fails on overlapping definitions between a project's APIs and its dependencies, and its documentation says the opposite. A malformed XRD can also be skipped without any message. Both are bounded issues that deserve owner attention, and neither should block the merge.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in #428. GenerateFromMultipleSources collects dependency and API sources, including transitive dependencies, and generates separate cached groups. The v2 lock records languages, group source maps, and generator fingerprints. Stale groups, missing or changed generated files, old locks, and damaged locks trigger regeneration or reassembly. Staging and swap logic removes stale output and preserves the prior tree on failure. API hashing excludes non-definition YAML. Command integration uses the same generation path, and tests cover these behaviors. TypeScript remains a follow-up as described by #428 and does not block this PR.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #428. Dependency source collection, lock handling, cache validation, staging, conflict detection, generator determinism fixes, and Rust schema merging support the merged schema-generation design. The command changes make all required generation paths use that design. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Breaking Changes

Explanation

No breaking change matching the check is present. The PR changes no files under apis/**. In cmd/crossplane/function/generate.go, the public fields and flags Name, PipelinePath, Language, and ProjectFile keep the same names, tags, defaults, and options. The command still generates project API schemas; it now also collects dependency sources through an internal helper. No public field or flag was removed, renamed, or made newly required, and no existing command behavior was removed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description clearly describes the merged, cached schema-generation changes, including dependency and API grouping, lock handling, caching, conflict detection, rollback, generator updates, testing, and known limitations.

Full details: Feature Gate Requirement

Explanation

The pull request introduces a significant, unconditional schema-generation behavior change. internal/project/build.go:265-280 replaces per-source generation with CollectSources and GenerateFromMultipleSources; cmd/crossplane/function/generate.go:201-216 also fetches dependencies and uses the merged path. The schema manager adds caching, stale-output removal, atomic swaps, and lock behavior. The reviewed diff changes no configuration or feature-gate files. Existing flags only control Go generator options or command maturity, and no caller selects a legacy path.

Resolution

Add a dedicated feature flag in internal/config/config.go, expose it in cmd/crossplane/config/set.go and help, and pass it through build, function generation, dependency operations, render, and other affected callers. Use the existing source-by-source generation path when the flag is disabled. Default the new merged path off until it is stable.

Document the new remote-dependency behavior of function generate.

Can you confirm that this behavior is intended? The command previously generated schemas from local APIs only. It now collects all configured dependencies before scaffolding the function. An uncached xpkg dependency, Git source, HTTP source, or Kubernetes source can require registry or network access and can cause generation to fail. Exact or cached xpkg references may not need registry access, so this is not an unconditional requirement.

If this behavior is intended, document it in the command help. Multiple-version warnings also use os.Stderr, which is the spinner's output stream, so they can interleave with the spinner.

Languages with no output from either source group still get their tree
swapped into place, and the swap is a rename, which needs the staged
directory to exist. The copy helper only creates directories when it
writes a file, so a language whose groups produced nothing failed the
whole build at the swap with 'failed to swap the <lang> tree in'. This
hit projects with no dependencies and no apis/ content yet.

Reported by CodeRabbit on crossplane#430; verified by a regression test that fails
on the previous code.

Addressing the remaining CodeRabbit nitpick about function generate's remote-dependency behavior:

Before this PR, function generate generated schemas from apis/ alone — dependency models were missing until a separate project build ran. It now collects every dependency declared in the project file, like project build: the generated function's imports need those models.

Behavioral consequences, now documented in the PR description:

  • The first function generate in a project needs network access (or a warm per-user package cache at ~/Library/Caches/crossplane/xpkg); CollectSources resolves and fetches every declared dependency.
  • Later runs reuse the same two caches: the per-user package cache (downloads) and the new project-local schemas/.cache/ (generator output), so warm repeat runs do not re-run generators.

The PR description now also explains the two-cache split: package cache (per-user, PullIfNotPresent, dependency clean-cache clears it) vs output cache (per-project, keyed by source versions + generator fingerprint). A code comment sits at the CollectSources call in 1d5533e.

Open the PR description's cache bullet for reviewer input: whether the per-project output cache should move into the per-user cache directory (shared across projects, no duplicated tree inside checked-in schemas/, at the cost of per-machine rather than portable state).

Several generators could produce different bytes for the same input, so
regenerating left churn in users' schema trees, and Go users could see
constant names change between builds. Each case is fixed here:

- Go: generateModelsWithGVK ranged over a map of GVK groups. Every
group's spec shares the same schema pointers, and the mutators edit
them in place, so what a group generated depended on which groups ran
first. TokenRequest's enum constants in io/k8s/authentication/v1 were
sometimes prefixed with the type name and sometimes not (about one run
in five). Groups, and shared k8s packages, now go in sorted order.
- KCL: generateKCLFile emitted imports in map order. They are sorted.
- KCL: the OpenAPI path wrote kcl.mod with edition v0.10.0, while the
  CRD path's `kcl import` in the pinned v0.11.2 image writes v0.11.2.
The template now uses the image's edition.
- Python: datamodel-code-generator records the input file in each
model's header ("# filename: ..."), so two copies of a shared model
differed only in that line. It is removed, as the timestamp already
  is.

Visible output changes: Python models lose the filename line, and an
OpenAPI-only project's kcl.mod edition changes from v0.10.0 to v0.11.2.

Schemas were written one source at a time: each source's output was
copied over the language directories and nothing was ever removed, and
the lock recorded only each source's version. So renamed or deleted
kinds, removed dependencies and dropped languages left stale models
behind; adding a language or deleting a language directory did not
regenerate dependencies; and apis/ was regenerated on every build. A
generator whose output describes the whole run (TypeScript, crossplane#170: one
npm package per run) could not work at all.

Every command that writes schemas -- project build/run, render,
dependency add and update-cache, function generate -- now collects all
sources and runs one pass in the schema manager:

- Sources form two groups, the project's dependencies (including
transitive xpkg dependencies) and its own APIs, passed in separately.
Each group is generated as a unit, cached in schemas/.cache/<group>/
with a stamp of the sources, languages and generator fingerprint it
was made from, and regenerated only when that stamp no longer
matches. An XRD edit regenerates only the APIs group. Stale groups,
and the CRD and OpenAPI runs within a group, generate concurrently.
- The language trees are assembled from the caches in schemas/.staging/
and swapped in by rename; a failed swap restores the languages
already swapped. The lock (now version 2: languages, groups and a
generator fingerprint of the CLI version plus each generator's
Fingerprint()) is written last, via a temp file, and only when it
changed. A failure at any step leaves the previous tree in place, and
a damaged or old lock reads as stale instead of failing the build.
- Parts are combined with conflict detection: the same path with
different content is an error, not a silent last-write-wins. A
generator can implement schemaMerger to combine parts itself, both
within a group and across groups.

Related changes:

- The APIs source reads only the project's own YAML. With `apis: .` it
used to hand the generators (and the version hash) every file in the
project, including node_modules and schemas/.cache; the other project
directories and hidden directories are now skipped.
- dependency add generates before it writes the project file, so a
dependency that cannot be fetched is never saved.
- Collecting sources warns when the project's dependencies resolve one
package to more than one version.
- Packages are memoized by resolved ref, so one invocation does not
download a package twice. AddPackage and AddAll are removed.
- Errors name sources the way users wrote them, and say which language
  and group failed.

Generating a whole group in one generator run made large projects much
slower: on a project with 16 provider packages, a cold build went from
about 100s on main to 300s, because one container processed every CRD
in sequence. Each source is now its own generator run, and the runs go
in parallel (up to the number of CPUs). Cold builds are back to main's
time, and the output is unchanged.

The .staging directory is now removed when a pass ends. Before, a pass
that regenerated the tree left the previous tree in .staging/replaced/
until the next run.

The .cache and .staging directories each get a .gitignore that ignores
everything, so projects that check schemas/ in don't pick them up.

Function generate now collects every dependency in the project file,
where before this PR it generated schemas from apis/ alone. Say so at
the CollectSources call and in the PR's behavior table: the first run
in a project needs the network (or a warm per-user package cache), and
later runs go through the same schema caches as project build.

When the assembled JSON tree has no schemas, jsonBuildIndexSchema wrote
an index.schema.json with no anyOf entries. Now it writes nothing. The
tree is assembled fresh each time, so there's no old index to remove.

The project's APIs source returned every YAML file under its path, and
its version hashed all of them. Editing a Composition, or any other
non-definition YAML beside the XRDs, therefore read as an API change.
The next build then regenerated the APIs group in every language,
which means running the Python and KCL containers for an edit that
can't change their output.

The source now returns only XRD and CRD documents: each file keeps the
definitions it had, and files with none are left out. Its version
hashes exactly those, together with their paths. The hash used to cover
contents only, so moving a definition to another file can now change it
too.

A pass only checked that each language directory existed, so a
generated file deleted or edited by hand stayed that way until a source
changed. Each assembly now records the SHA-256 of every file it wrote,
in schemas/.cache/tree.json. Each pass checks every recorded file and
reassembles the tree from the group caches if any is missing or
different. That runs no generator, so it is cheap.

The record lives in the cache directory, not the lock. Projects such as
modelplane check schemas/ in, and a lock with a line per generated file
would churn on every dependency change. A missing or unreadable record,
as after a fresh clone or a crash before it is written, costs one
reassembly.

Files added to a tree are not checked. Tools write there: importing the
Python models creates __pycache__ directories, and treating those as
drift would reassemble the tree on every pass.

Per-file checks are from crossplane#435. On modelplane, with 2,004 Python files,
a no-op pass takes as long as before (13-15s, almost all of it
dependency resolution). A hand-edited model is restored byte-for-byte,
and 2,003 compiled .pyc files are left alone.

Rust support (crossplane#374) landed on main after this PR's base. Its generator
didn't implement Fingerprint, so the merge didn't compile. It also
didn't fit the merged pass: each source's crate declares only its own
modules, in src/lib.rs, the mod.rs files and Cargo.toml. main copies
the sources' crates over each other and rebuilds those files afterwards.
This pass rejects two different copies of a file, so any project with
more than one source failed with "conflicting generated file
models/Cargo.toml".

The Rust generator is now run-level, like TypeScript:
MergeGeneratedSchemas copies every source's models, which must match
where two sources share one, and rebuilds the module tree once for the
merged crate. Its fingerprint is empty, since it runs in-process with no
options.

Making it run-level exposed a bug in tree assembly. Merged run-level
output kept the models/ prefix that every other language has stripped,
so the crate landed in rust/models/ instead of rust/. Assembly now
strips it for run-level languages too, as the TypeScript branch already
does.

main's Rust manager test used the per-source Generate this PR removes.
It now runs the real Rust generator through GenerateFromMultipleSources
on three sources, two of which share a module.

Use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for the error case.

The table structure, the reason fields and the PascalCase case names look good. The error case uses strings.Contains(err.Error(), ...). The path instructions require "use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing". MergeGeneratedSchemas builds the error with errors.Errorf, so the test cannot compare it to a sentinel value. One option is a want.err field compared with cmpopts.AnyError. Another option is to keep the substring check and add a short comment that explains why. Which do you prefer?

As per path instructions: "Enforce table-driven test structure: ... use cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() for error testing."

Three review fixes:

- The APIs source dropped YAML documents it couldn't parse, so a syntax
error in an XRD silently removed its models from schemas/ and the
build succeeded. Before the source filtered for definitions, the
generators parsed every file and failed on it. It fails again, naming
the file and asking for the syntax to be fixed.
- When the project's APIs and a dependency generated the same file with
different content, the error told the user to report a bug, and
assembleTree's doc still said the APIs copy wins. The error now says
the two sources disagree and suggests removing one of the
definitions, and the doc describes the actual behavior.
- function generate now fetches dependencies, and fetch failures came
through raw. They now say what was being fetched and suggest checking
  network access and registry credentials.

…ate's fetch

Three review nitpicks:

- The warning that the project's dependencies resolve a package to more
than one version was written to stderr in the middle of source
collection. Collection always runs under a spinner on that stream, so
the two could garble each other. The dependency manager now records
its warnings, and each of the eight commands that collect sources
prints them once its spinner has stopped. Warnings are printed even
when the step failed, because a warning can explain the failure.
- function generate now fetches the project's dependencies, and its
help now says so, including that the first run may need network
  access and registry credentials.
- The Rust merger test checks its error with cmp.Diff and
cmpopts.EquateErrors, and keeps a substring check on the message,
which is what names the conflicting file.

@coderabbitai Following up on two nitpicks from your review summaries, both addressed in c6d8737:

function generate remote-dependency behavior (review of 5146ddc)

  • The command's help (help/generate.md) now says that it generates schemas for the project's APIs and every dependency, and that the first run in a project may need network access and registry credentials.
  • The multiple-version warning no longer goes straight to stderr during source collection, where the spinner draws. The dependency manager records it. Each of the eight commands that collect sources (function generate, dependency add, dependency update-cache, render xr, render op, composition generate, project build, project run) prints it once its spinner has stopped. It is printed even when the step failed, because the warning can explain the failure.

Error assertions in rust_merge_test.go (review of d7b1aee)

  • The error case now uses cmp.Diff(tc.wantErr, err, cmpopts.EquateErrors()) with cmpopts.AnyError.
  • It keeps one substring check on the message, with a comment saying why: the error is built with errors.Errorf, so there is no sentinel, and the message naming the conflicting file is the behavior under test.

@stevendborrelli Thanks for the fixes and the explanation. I inspected c6d8737. Both review points are addressed:

  • function generate help now documents dependency schema generation and possible network and registry credential requirements.
  • All eight commands print collected warnings after their spinner stops, including on failure.
  • rust_merge_test.go now uses cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() and cmpopts.AnyError. The substring check is appropriate because it verifies that the diagnostic names the conflicting file.

No further changes are needed for these points. I did not run tests.

Learning: In crossplane/cli, internal/dependency/manager.go collects multiple-version warnings instead of printing them during source collection. Commands must call Manager.PrintWarnings after their spinner stops and before returning a step error, because warnings can explain failures and must not interfere with spinner output.

Learning: In crossplane/cli, internal/schemas/generator/rust_merge_test.go intentionally retains a substring assertion for the conflicting-file diagnostic alongside cmp.Diff with cmpopts.EquateErrors() and cmpopts.AnyError. The error uses errors.Errorf without a sentinel, and naming the conflicting file is behavior under test.

Learning: In crossplane/cli, `function generate` and `project build` use the same dependency resolution path. Resolving dependency version ranges requires listing registry tags even when package contents are cached. Do not recommend running `crossplane project build` to fix an offline dependency-resolution failure in `function generate`.
