Added two follow-up commits that remove the redundant Wigner runs the banded layout initially paid for on the compiled backward:
Numbers on the DPA4-Neo N=4096 frame (RTX 5090, same tree, flag on vs the previous head 0278e45):
Monomial forward launches per frame drop from 4 to 2 (the band assembly only). Correctness against the previous head: energy rel 1.7e-9, forces rel 1.1e-6 (same noise floor as before); the band operator's forward and backward are bitwise-equal to the plain composition in eager tests, and the existing dense/band bitwise suite still passes. |

@OutisLi @wanghan-iapcm @njzjz requesting a review, please. Following the 2026-10-13 discussion we validated the combined stack of our six performance PRs (#6056, #6057, #6060, #6070, #6071, #6072) with a multi-scale gate: diamond + bcc-Cu at ~500 / ~2000 / ~4400 atoms, three columns (pure torch.compile with all custom kernels off / current master / our changes on). All accuracy cells sit within 2.2x the pure baseline's own run-to-run band (criterion: 3x), and no tested atom count regresses in time or memory — full numbers in the PR descriptions. Suggested review order for the six: #6056 -> #6057 -> #6060 (small and self-contained) -> #6070 -> #6071 -> #6072. |

Correct the backward-path comment.
The fp16x3 backward does not recover the final identity input. It computes the input gradient from grad_out, the weights, and saved z_all. Update the note:

Thank you for the review — you are right that selecting the banded layout while a dense-layout consumer is active is a real hazard. Addressed in e92fd5c:

Both false-positive classes are addressed in 7024203: the gate is now evaluated per cache build against the currently selected consumers rather than once at construction.
Verification: your five scenarios are encoded as the gate test matrix ( One boundary note: the gate is a shape/config-level decision evaluated per build; it deliberately does not attempt to predict mid-frame dispatch, and the flash-binding check (layout, projections, heads) mirrors the constructor conditions the dispatch itself uses. |
|
Addressed in bce0282: the gate now derives its levels from the per-block values captured at construction (
Training-mode aggregation additionally requires The test matrix reflects the construction-scoped-environment pattern you pointed to: |
…DP_PACKED_D_INFER)

for more information, see https://pre-commit.ci
…ent consumers The gate is now a call-time check over the currently selected forward and inverse consumers: without a bound flash aggregation the message is rotated back through the dense inverse matrix, so no-attention and projected-attention configurations keep the dense surfaces; training mode reads the training level and its rotate-mix binding instead of a construction-time boolean, so level combinations like inference 2 / training 0 followed by .train() no longer pass a stale verdict. The gate matrix tests now cover both mode cases and the aggregation routes.
…vels Dispatch resolves Triton levels through the values captured on each block at construction (active_triton_level), so the gate now reads those same numbers instead of the ambient environment: a block built inside an inference-2/training-0 scope can no longer pass the gate in training mode after the ambient training level changes, and the converse eval case is covered as well. Training-mode aggregation additionally requires the flash operator to have been bound for training (_flash_atten_trains), matching what the training dispatch actually uses.

Scoped follow-up at exact head 813b37c, including the final two-file correction and necessary rebased dispatch/cache context.
The residual captured-level issue in my previous follow-up is fixed: the gate now reads the same per-block inference/training levels used by production dispatch, and training additionally requires _flash_atten_trains. Both previously reported construction-scoped-environment cases now retain the dense matrices. Inference-only flash binding also correctly rejects packed storage in training. Supported packed evaluation/training controls remain admitted, and the original no-attention/projected-attention/mode-switch fixes are preserved.
Verification: nine exact-source host cases replayed the gate, actual consumer branch conditions and cache construction with doubles. This is not full descriptor construction/execution, numerical validation or a CUDA/Triton run. The added repository test is a helper matrix; the author's reported 45 passes plus one skip is separately attributed to their response.
This acknowledges the specific fix, not overall approval: the existing SeZM registration placement finding remains present at current sezm.py lines 134–135, despite its thread being marked outdated. I have not opened a duplicate finding. The seven current-head Actions workflows still require approval and have not executed.

Reviewed head 813b37c418a851c11427a8c4809ad56a258d8ae6 against base 668b60cc2a9559f79abb9c33acd959833376344f. Requesting changes for the correctness and integration issues below.
The motivation is sound: reduced mmax=1 consumers need only the structural Wigner rows, so replacing the dense per-edge surfaces with a shared band can reduce memory traffic and storage. The reported RTX 5090 inference results are useful author-provided evidence; I did not independently reproduce the performance measurements.
1. [P1] Restore the SeZM descriptor registration
sezm.py:134-135 registers block_supports_packed_wigner under "SeZM" instead of registering DescrptSeZM. This breaks the ordinary descriptor factory even when packed storage is disabled. An actual CPU factory call with a small valid descriptor configuration raises TypeError: object.__new__(X): X is not a type object (function); the same configuration with type="sezm" constructs successfully.
Move the registration back onto the descriptor class and cover construction through the registry. This confirms the still-present existing finding, rather than opening another inline thread for it.
2. [P2] Complete the packed-layout contract for parameter gradients
The training eligibility branch explicitly admits a bound Triton rotate-mix path. However, rotate_mix_basis_grad() still passes the two-dimensional band to the dense-only _block_to_local_op. The registered rotate-mix backward calls this helper when the channel basis requires gradients.
A real trainable SO2Convolution with lmax=1, channels=64, n_focus=2, focus_dim=64, two mixing layers, degree_channel rank=1, and training level 1 is admitted by the gate. In a separate seven-edge operator check using the exact Triton kernels through the CPU interpreter, dense forward and channel-basis gradients pass; packed forward is identical, but the registered backward raises IndexError. The CUDA launch argument builder also accesses wigner.stride(2), which cannot exist on the band, and fails before a kernel launch. This is not a GPU execution result.
Support the band in every required parameter-gradient consumer and cover the registered autograd path with trainable parameters. If the intended scope is inference only, make training retain the dense layout explicitly instead of advertising packed training eligibility. The scope must be coherent: the title and performance evidence concern inference, the layout gate currently admits training, and the custom Wigner-band assembly itself is eval-only. An inference force backward alone does not establish parameter-gradient or force-loss training support.
3. Apply the optimization consistently to PT and PT-expt
The PT cache builder produces D_packed, but PT-expt still inherits the dpmodel cache path, which constructs D_full/Dt_full. Its Wigner wrapper and cache producer have no corresponding band-production integration. Sharing a packed-capable Triton kernel does not activate the optimization when that backend never produces or passes the band.
Please carry the optimization through both backends, keeping the layout contract, dispatch semantics, code style and logic aligned. Preserve the existing separation between backend-neutral dpmodel mathematics and PyTorch/kernel runtime bindings; do not make dpmodel depend on PT implementation modules. Add shared behavioral coverage that demonstrates the selected layout and supported gradients in both backends. The relevant baseline paths were also checked against current upstream/master (4f78c2d).
4. Use existing acceleration levels, not another public micro-switch
DP_PACKED_D_INFER introduces another public switch for an internal storage/consumer choice. Integrate selection with the existing acceleration levels and actual consumer capability, retaining dense storage where required.
First assess whether the storage optimization can be a level-1 capability without a shape-dependent tuning decision; level 2 should not be assumed merely because kernels are involved. If a level-2 profitability/configuration decision is needed, connect it to the existing freeze-time autotuning flow and evaluate the packed configuration itself. The current rotate-mix sweeps explicitly pass PACKED=False, so those sweeps alone do not establish a packed-layout winner. Keep a measured fallback and provide evidence on hardware available to the author; there is no requirement for tables from inaccessible GPUs.
5. Consolidate the duplicated Wigner mathematics and band assembly
The shared _compute_all_blocks() and forward_band() are a useful consolidation, but _wigner_band_impl() introduces another implementation of the low-order block formulas and the same band assembly. The custom-op boundary does not require maintaining independent copies of the forward mathematics.
Factor the reusable low-order calculations and structural-row assembly so the ordinary and custom-op paths use the same definitions. An explicit optimized adjoint may remain where justified; this is not a request to discard necessary derivative specialization. Keep the resulting PT and PT-expt implementations consistent as part of the same integration.
Validation and test scope
- The two existing packed-consumer gate tests pass, but they do not catch the parameter-gradient failure.
- Small CPU checks pass for band entries and quaternion gradients at lmax=1,2,3, and for the custom band op's values and first derivatives at lmax=3. The registration and parameter-gradient failures above were reproduced independently.
- The added tests use 2048/4096-edge cases while missing registry construction, trainable channel-basis gradients, and PT-expt activation. Prefer small representative cases covering actual dispatch and tile boundaries, with shared backend coverage; justify larger ordinary-CI cases where necessary.
- No GPU execution, full compiled-model validation, or performance/test-runtime measurement was performed in this review.
The module-level packed-Wigner gate helper accidentally carried the
register("SeZM") decorator, so the descriptor registry mapped "SeZM"
to a plain function and factory construction raised TypeError. Move the
decorator back onto DescrptSeZM and cover construction through the
registry for all four type keys.
|
Thank you for the round — and for catching the registration break. 1. Registration (P1) — fixed in d2616eb. The module-level gate helper had accidentally ended up under the 2. Training scope — agreed, the PR's evidence and title are inference-only. I'll make the training gate explicitly retain the dense layout (packed eligibility becomes eval-only) rather than advertising packed training, and add coverage for the registered parameter-gradient path on the dense layout. 3. dpmodel backend — will carry the packed layout through the dpmodel cache path (keeping dpmodel free of PT imports), with shared behavioral coverage for both backends. 4. Level integration — 5. Wigner math consolidation — the low-order block formulas and band assembly in Items 2–5 are in progress; I'll report back per item with the verification. |

Scoped delta review at d2616eb2ef0d3484aea8d08897a0e4955c5cdc80 versus previously reviewed 813b37c418a851c11427a8c4809ad56a258d8ae6.
The registration correction is sound: register("SeZM") is now attached to DescrptSeZM, beside the other three aliases, rather than to block_supports_packed_wigner. The added regression resolves all four aliases through BaseDescriptor.get_class_by_type, checks class identity, and constructs each descriptor. The diff is limited to this decorator relocation and the regression test.
I checked the exact-source AST and executed the four unchanged decorator expressions against a registry/class double; all four aliases attach and instantiate the class double, and the gate helper is undecorated. This is a bounded host check, not actual descriptor construction or a native/GPU run. The author's actual four-alias construction result is separately reported in their response. Seven current-head build/test/security workflows are still action_required, so they provide no new execution evidence.
This closes the registration concern only, not overall approval. The unchanged parameter-gradient/layout defect and the remaining integration/design requests in the existing review remain outstanding; the author explicitly reports items 2–5 in progress. I have not repeated those findings or duplicated that ongoing repair.

Thanks for the memory win. I am requesting changes for three items: the channel-basis gradient path appears to receive the banded Wigner tensor in a dense-only kernel, and the flag-on paths have no end-to-end or fallback coverage. The remaining docstring comments are non-blocking.
Note that the Test Python / Test CUDA workflows for this PR are still at action_required, so none of the new tests have run in CI yet.

Blocking: the band reaches a dense-only kernel in the channel-basis backward.
With the flag on, _packed_d(edge_cache) hands the (E, 3D-2) band to _rotate_mix_op. Its backward calls rotate_mix_basis_grad whenever rank > 0 and needs_input_grad[6] (the channel basis requires grad), and that helper recomputes the rotated feature through the dense _block_to_local_op (

Please either make rotate_mix_basis_grad band-aware or keep the band off when the basis needs a gradient, and add a test with trainable=True and rank > 0. I traced this from the source and could not run it on GPU here, so please confirm on your side.

Non-blocking (docstring): public wigner_band_op takes eight parameters but has a one-line docstring; please add numpydoc Parameters / Returns sections like the surrounding public APIs.
Training builds now always keep the dense Wigner surfaces: the registered parameter-gradient consumers (the channel-basis backward of the rotate-mix operator among them) address the dense surface, so a training cache must never carry the band even when the bound kernels could read it. The gate returns False for training before any consumer check, and the gate matrix test asserts training rejection for packed-capable blocks as well. End-to-end coverage with DP_PACKED_D_INFER actually set drives the whole chain (edge-cache build, per-block gate, consumers): the flag-on eval cache carries the (E, 3D-2) band and never materializes the dense surfaces, the same model in training builds the dense layout, and the flag-off outputs are bitwise-equal. The unsupported branches are covered as well: forward_band_fused falls back to the plain composition when the op gate rejects (training), and forward_band raises for lmax >= poly_lmin. Docstrings: wigner_band_op gains full parameter documentation, the packed_wigner contract lists the full exclusion set, _build_edge_wigner documents the fourth return value (D_packed), the m = -1 slot range is corrected to [D, 2D - 1), and the flag description no longer claims an on-demand unpack that does not exist.

Scoped delta review of 0eb7874 versus d2616eb. The early training rejection now correctly keeps training caches dense, and the flag-on descriptor test, unsupported-branch coverage and documentation corrections are useful.
The existing channel-basis-gradient blocker is not fully resolved, however: .eval() does not disable autograd or freeze parameters. block_supports_packed_wigner(conv, False) still admits the rotate-mix band while the registered _rotate_mix_backward calls rotate_mix_basis_grad whenever rank > 0 and needs_input_grad[6]. That unchanged helper invokes the dense _block_to_local_op; its launcher still reads wigner.stride(2), which does not exist on the 2-D band. An eval-mode backward with a trainable channel basis therefore remains unsupported. The new descriptor test runs the packed eval forward inside torch.no_grad() and only switches to training for the dense control, so it does not exercise this residual case.
I independently executed the exact gate, registered-backward decision and dense launcher with shape/kernel doubles: eval admitted the band and reached the stride(2) IndexError; training rejected it; disabling the basis-gradient flag avoided that branch. This is a bounded host control, NOT a native Torch/Triton/CUDA numerical run. Please make the gradient consumer band-aware or ensure packed admission also excludes the relevant gradient-enabled eval case, and cover an eval backward with trainable rank>0 basis parameters. This follows the existing finding, not a new duplicate inline thread: #6071 (comment) .
The earlier backend integration, acceleration-level selection and Wigner-math consolidation requests are unchanged by this delta, so this is not overall approval. Seven current-head workflows remain action_required; the author's test report is not independently rerun here.
Eval mode does not freeze parameters: an eval backward against the still-trainable channel basis (e.g. validation-loss gradients) reaches the dense-only basis-grad helper of the rotate-mix backward, whose launcher reads the dense Wigner strides that do not exist on the band. The gate now rejects the layout whenever a rank>0 mixer carries a channel basis that still requires grad, in either mode; freezing the basis removes the gradient consumer and the band serves the ordinary inference backward again. The gate matrix covers both basis states, and the end-to-end class gains an eval-backward case: trainable basis -> dense cache with real parameter gradients, frozen basis -> the band returns.

Scoped delta review of 0eb7874 -> f9e5fbb: the eval-mode channel-basis-gradient admission issue from my previous review is addressed. The gate now rejects a rank>0 mixer with a trainable channel basis before dropping the dense Wigner surfaces, including in eval mode. Freezing that basis re-admits the packed-capable configuration. This matches the registered backward's basis-gradient condition and preserves the existing unconditional training exclusion.
I executed ten bounded checks of the exact source gate with host doubles: both Triton bindings, train/eval modes, trainable/frozen bases, rank zero, and a live freeze transition passed. I also inspected the new descriptor regression: it performs an eval backward and asserts an actual basis gradient while observing a dense cache. Its frozen-basis control checks packed admission under no_grad; it does not independently validate a frozen-basis force backward. These are host/source checks, not my own native descriptor/Torch/CUDA run. The author's reported 47 passes + one skip and two end-to-end passes remain separately attributed.
This closes the specific residual gradient-admission concern, not overall approval: the earlier dpmodel integration, acceleration-level selection and Wigner-math consolidation requests are unchanged by this three-file delta. All seven exact-head build/test/security workflows are still action_required, so no hosted execution evidence is added. No source or CI actions taken.

Three findings. The first is blocking: the module-scope operator registration makes deepmd.pt unimportable on the torch releases the package documents as supported. The other two are about the correctness of the banded path itself rather than its coverage: the band is built at one degree and indexed at another, and the operator's backward is exact to first order but not beyond.
The band layout and the kernel offsets themselves checked out — every packed slot was replayed against the dense rows it replaces, and the flash, rotate-mix and zonal consumers agree slot for slot. What is in question here is the boundary of the new configuration, not the arithmetic inside it.

Blocking: import deepmd.pt fails on torch 2.1-2.5, which doc/backend.md names as supported.
This line registers sezm_triton::wigner_band at module scope, and the matching torch.library.register_autograd at line 2245 is equally unconditional. wignerd.py is imported unconditionally through deepmd/pt/model/descriptor/__init__.py -> sezm.py -> sezm_nn/__init__.py, so the registration runs for every user of the pt backend, not only for models that enable the banded layout. torch.library.triton_op was added in torch 2.6 and torch.library.register_autograd in 2.4, while doc/backend.md:48 states "PyTorch 2.1 or above is required" and backend/find_pytorch.py:138 emits torch>=2.1.0. On any of those releases the import raises AttributeError before a model can be built, so the dense fallback this module already provides never gets a chance to run.
Trigger. import deepmd.pt.model.descriptor — and with it every training and inference entry point that imports it — on torch 2.1 through 2.5. No DP_PACKED_D_INFER or DP_TRITON_INFER setting is involved; the failure happens at import, with the feature fully disabled.
Call chain. deepmd/pt/model/descriptor/__init__.py:45 -> sezm.py:88 -> sezm_nn/__init__.py:124 -> wignerd.py:2139 torch.library.triton_op(...); on 2.1-2.3 the next failure would be wignerd.py:2245 torch.library.register_autograd(...).
Consequence. The entire pt descriptor package, not only SeZM/DPA4, cannot be imported on a torch release the project documents as supported. The registration is only needed by the opt-in branch (forward_band_fused falls back to forward_band whenever band_op_supported() is false), so it can be guarded without changing any default behaviour.
Evidence boundary. The version boundary was established from the upstream sources: torch/library.py at v2.5.0 has no triton_op reference while v2.6.0 imports it and lists it in __all__, and register_autograd is absent in v2.1.0-v2.3.0. The failure was reproduced on the installed torch 2.10 by removing the attribute and executing this module's source, which raises the AttributeError; an actual 2.5 interpreter was not available here. CI pins 2.10/2.11, which is why this does not show up in the test suite.
This is the same class of issue raised earlier on the sibling change to this file, where the registration was wrapped in try/except with a fallback to the eager path.

The band is built at the descriptor degree but indexed at each block's degree.
The cache holds a single D_packed built by self.wigner_calc, whose degree is mp_init_lmax = l_schedule[0] — the largest block. Each block's rotate-mix and flash kernels derive their per-edge stride and their m = -1 / +1 group boundaries from DIM = (conv.lmax + 1) ** 2, i.e. from that block's own degree. l_schedule is validated as non-increasing, so later blocks may have a smaller degree than the band's. In that case a block reads a band of width 3 * D_block - 2 out of a buffer whose per-edge stride is 3 * D_max - 2, and its m != 0 groups start at the wrong offsets. The gate here decides per block but never compares the block's degree against the degree the band was built at.
Trigger. A pyramid schedule such as l_schedule: [3, 2], with mmax: 1, model.eval(), CUDA with Triton, DP_PACKED_D_INFER truthy and DP_TRITON_INFER >= 1, and a frozen channel basis so the gate admits the band.
Call chain. sezm.py:1490 / :1807 pass packed_wigner=self._packed_wigner_ok() into the cache build -> edge_cache.py:737-748 builds D_packed at calc.lmax == mp_init_lmax -> the block's _rotate_mix_impl / flash launch with conv.lmax -> so2_value_path.py:534 DIM = (L + 1) ** 2 and :544-545 d_base = w_ptr + edge * (3 * DIM - 2), with offm / offp at DIM + base - 1 and 2 * DIM + base - 2.
Consequence. Wrong Wigner entries, hence wrong reduced messages and wrong energies and forces, silently, for every block whose degree is below l_schedule[0]. Uniform schedules — what the production checkpoints use — are unaffected, and the flag is off by default.
Evidence boundary. Established by reading the construction (band built at mp_init_lmax), the gate (no degree comparison), the kernel offset formulas and the non-increasing l_schedule validation; no CUDA device was available to run the combination.
Note on scope: the dense rotate-mix path already assumes wigner was built at the block's degree (so2.py:1791 states "must be compatible with this block's lmax" as a precondition), so this is not introduced by the banded storage. The packed path inherits the assumption, and the admission gate added here is the natural place to enforce it, since it is the first code that decides whether a precomputed rotation surface may be shared across blocks.

A second derivative through the band silently drops the degree-1 term.
The l >= 2 rows of _wigner_band_backward go through _monomials_bwd_op, which carries its own registered second order. The l = 1 rows are differentiated here with torch.autograd.grad(block1, q, g1) and the default create_graph=False, and q is detached from the saved input, so this term contributes nothing to a second backward. The returned grad_quat still requires grad through the monomial terms, so PyTorch returns a wrong second gradient instead of raising. The sibling operator _monomials_bwd_op in wigner_monomials.py handles the same situation with create_graph=torch.is_grad_enabled().
Trigger. A second differentiation through a packed band in eval: a standard model with a dpa4/sezm descriptor and hessian_mode: true, with DP_PACKED_D_INFER truthy and DP_TRITON_INFER >= 1, on CUDA. torch.autograd.functional.hessian builds its inner Jacobian with create_graph=True, so the Hessian is a second derivative regardless of the outer flag. Training keeps the dense layout, and the native SeZM/DPA4 model classes do not expose enable_hessian, so neither of those paths is affected.
Call chain. make_hessian_model.py:179 torch.autograd.functional.hessian -> descriptor forward -> build_edge_cache -> forward_band_fused -> wigner_band_op -> this backward, whose l = 1 branch returns a tensor detached from q.
Consequence. energy_derv_r_derv_r is silently missing the degree-1 contribution. Energies, forces and virials are unaffected.
Evidence boundary. Reproduced numerically on CPU (float64, 9 edges, DP_TRITON_INFER=1 so the op branch is taken, random cotangent): first gradient against forward_band to 3.6e-16 relative, second gradient to 1.2e-1; isolating the band slots gives 8.8e-1 relative when only the l = 1 slots carry cotangent and 3.6e-16 when only l >= 2 do. A standard EnergyModel with the SeZM descriptor and hessian_mode was confirmed to construct and compute a dense Hessian on CPU. The Triton kernels themselves were not executed here; the failure is in the autograd formula, above the kernels.
create_graph=torch.is_grad_enabled() on the nested call, or an explicit raise when a second derivative is requested, would close it.
…der l=1 The wigner_band registration now sits under try/except: torch < 2.6 lacks triton_op (and < 2.4 register_autograd) while every deepmd.pt import pulls this module, so a hard registration broke the whole pt backend on documented-supported releases; the eager band composition serves them, and band_op_supported reports the fused route as absent. The packed-admission gate now requires every block's degree to equal mp_init_lmax: the cache builds one band at the largest degree while each consumer kernel derives its stride and m-group offsets from its own block degree, so a decreasing l_schedule would read wrong slots out of a wider stride; pyramid schedules keep the dense surfaces. The band backward's l = 1 term keeps the saved quaternion in the graph when it can receive a second derivative and mirrors the sibling monomial backward's create_graph=is_grad_enabled(), so a Hessian through the band no longer silently drops the degree-1 contribution. Three regressions: a subprocess that removes triton_op for the module's re-execution (import survives, op stays None, public entry returns the composition values), a uniform-degree gate matrix, and an lmax == 1 second-order comparison against the composition (the whole backward is the l = 1 term there). Negative controls turn each red.
|
All three findings are addressed in 785dc62 — thank you especially for tracing the import chain and the kernel offset formulas. 1. Registration made optional (blocking). The 2. Uniform-degree admission. 3. Second-order l = 1 term. The new missing-API regression test itself rejects genuine older supported Torch installations. In source/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py:2515–2517, the child unconditionally asserts getattr(torch.library, "triton_op", None) is not None before deleting the API. On Torch <2.6, the API is already absent, so the child fails at the control assertion before exercising the now-optional registration. The test and its class have no version skip; backend/find_pytorch.py retains torch>=2.1.0.
Please treat an already-absent API as the fallback case: only delete/restore the attribute when it originally exists, then perform the same import/fallback assertions. A separate modern-Torch control can check registration where supported.
I replayed these exact three statements with API-present/absent host doubles: present passes, absent raises the quoted control assertion. This is bounded control-flow evidence, not a native legacy-Torch/CUDA test. Reviewed at 785dc62; current-head Actions still require approval. This reports the new test regression, not a duplicate of the existing production registration finding.

The eleven points from my earlier review are all resolved on this head, and each is backed by a test: the dense-only channel-basis consumer is now excluded by block_supports_packed_wigner, the end-to-end flag coverage exists, both unsupported branches are exercised, the module-level registration is guarded, the second-order l = 1 term survives, and the uniform-degree gate rejects a pyramid schedule.
I also verified the band arithmetic itself as far as this machine allows (CPU only, no GPU): the band slots against the dense block rows for lmax 1..10, the op's first- and second-order gradients against plain autograd, the GIE gather against the dense gather, and the forward refactor against the pre-PR implementation — all correct.
The comments below are about where the new switch and its wiring are not covered or not engaged. None of them is a wrong-result or crash finding on a default path.

Is this branch expected to be reachable? GeometricInitialEmbedding.forward can only see a None zonal_coupling when the dense surfaces exist.
if zonal_coupling is None: now prefers edge_cache.D_packed, but tracing both descriptor call sites shows the branch cannot run: _build_gie_zonal_coupling returns None only on the Dt_full is not None path (sezm.py:2213-2226), while in packed mode _build_edge_wigner returns D_full = Dt_full = None together with the band, so the helper always returns a tensor — the packed slice, the shared runs, or forward_zonal. Both self.gie(...) call sites pass that value unconditionally.
Trigger: none through the descriptor. Reaching the new body would require a direct call to the module with an explicit zonal_coupling=None and a packed cache.
Call chain: DescrptSeZM.forward / forward_with_edges -> _build_gie_zonal_coupling (sezm.py:2213) -> returns the band slice at :2224 -> gie(..., zonal_coupling=<tensor>) -> the if zonal_coupling is None: body is skipped.
Consequence: the branch is untested and unreachable, and the new end-to-end test's own docstring states that "the consumers in so2.py / embedding.py all run against the banded storage" — for embedding.py that is not the case, which will mislead the next reader about where the band is covered. If you did expect this branch to fire, the call graph above is where to look; otherwise it can be removed.
Evidence boundary: established from the call sites and the mutual exclusion of D_packed and Dt_full in _build_edge_wigner; not executed (no GPU on this host).

DP_PACKED_D_INFER is silently inert when DP_CUDA_INFER=1 is also set.
_build_edge_wigner builds the band only when the resolved calculator exposes forward_band. In eval mode forward_with_edges passes fused_wigner=self._cuda_wigner_fn whenever cuda_infer_level() >= 1, and WignerDenseCuda has neither forward_band nor band_supported, so the guard falls through and the dense (E, D, D) surfaces are built instead. Nothing logs it. block_supports_packed_wigner excludes the CUDA convolution paths but not this dense Wigner producer, so both switches can be on and the band still never appears.
Trigger: eval, fp32, CUDA Wigner op available, DP_CUDA_INFER=1 together with DP_TRITON_INFER >= 1 and DP_PACKED_D_INFER=1, on a model whose blocks otherwise pass the packed gate.
Call chain: forward_with_edges (sezm.py:1801 fused_wigner=..., :1809 packed_wigner=...) -> build_edge_cache_from_edges -> _build_edge_wigner -> the callable(getattr(calc, "forward_band", None)) conjunct is False -> dense branch.
Consequence: the advertised memory saving is silently lost for users who combine the CUDA level-1 inference suite with the Triton inference path; results stay correct. The combination is not covered by any test (the new end-to-end tests set DP_TRITON_INFER and DP_PACKED_D_INFER but never DP_CUDA_INFER), and the exclusion list in packed_wigner's docstring names consumer paths only, not this producer.
Evidence boundary: read from the gate, the calculator class and the call sites; not executed (no GPU here).

The band is also skipped on no-grad inference paths that bypass the parameter-freezing context.
block_supports_packed_wigner rejects a block whose channel_basis still has requires_grad=True. DeepEval.eval is fine — ModelWrapper.forward runs inside _frozen_parameter_context, so the gate opens and the band is used. But DeepEval.eval_embedding (descriptor/activation extraction, used by deep_entrypoints/embedding.py) calls SeZMModel.forward_embedding, which wraps the forward in torch.no_grad() without freezing parameters; there requires_grad is still True while no graph can be built, so the gate closes and the dense surfaces are materialised again.
Trigger: DP_PACKED_D_INFER=1, DP_TRITON_INFER >= 1, eval, the default radial_so2_mode="degree_channel" with rank >= 1, and a forward that does not pass through _frozen_parameter_context — e.g. DeepEval.eval_embedding, or a direct model.eval() followed by with torch.no_grad(): model(...).
Call chain: DeepEval.eval_embedding -> SeZMModel.forward_embedding (torch.no_grad() at sezm_model.py:950) -> forward_with_edges -> _packed_wigner_ok -> block_supports_packed_wigner returns False -> dense build.
Consequence: the same model runs the band on DeepEval.eval and the dense layout on eval_embedding, with no log; the optimisation is absent exactly where a caller cannot take a gradient. Checking torch.is_grad_enabled() rather than only channel_basis.requires_grad would keep the documented safety property (an eval-mode backward against trainable parameters must stay dense) while letting these paths use the band. Outputs are bit-identical either way, so there is no correctness impact.
Evidence boundary: the gate, the wrapper's freezing context and the no_grad wrapper are all read from source; the band-engagement preconditions beyond the gate are taken from the PR description and the new test rather than executed.

forward_band_fused's op branch — the only place production actually calls wigner_band_op — is never executed by a test.
The tests that enable the op call wigner_band_op directly through a hand-written argument list (_op_band), and the one test that calls forward_band_fused runs in training mode where band_op_supported() is asserted False, i.e. it exercises the fallback. So the wiring inside forward_band_fused — which attributes feed the op, the q_unit normalisation, the dtype/lmax arguments — has no assertion at all. The end-to-end packed tests cannot cover it either: they use l_schedule=[1, 1], and band_op_supported() requires the exp_l2/exp_l3 tables that only exist from lmax 2/3, so those runs take the eager composition.
Trigger: DP_PACKED_D_INFER=1, eval, uniform lmax=3, Triton infer level >= 1, torch >= 2.6 — the configuration in which _build_edge_wigner reaches forward_band_fused and it calls the op.
Call chain: _build_edge_wigner (edge_cache.py:748) -> WignerDCalculator.forward_band_fused (wignerd.py:735) -> wigner_band_op (wignerd.py:2271).
Consequence: a swapped or renamed attribute in that call, or a gate regression, would silently produce wrong banded inference values — the direct-op tests compare against a duplicated argument list, so they keep passing.
Evidence boundary: established by enumerating the tests at this head (the only forward_band_fused call is the training-fallback test); the GPU-gated tests were not run here.

The production model entry point is not covered with the flag on: every packed end-to-end test goes through the nlist builder.
TestSeZMPackedWignerEndToEnd calls model(coord, atype, nlist, ...), which is DescrptSeZM.forward and reaches build_edge_cache. The SeZM model, however, evaluates through forward_with_edges (sezm_model.py:1561), which calls build_edge_cache_from_edges and passes packed_wigner=self._packed_wigner_ok() at sezm.py:1809. A wiring regression on that one line — or the forwarding inside the from-edges builder — would leave every current test green, and at best the band would silently never be built on the path the benchmark uses.
Trigger: any SeZM model evaluation (forward_lower -> core_compute -> forward_with_edges) with DP_PACKED_D_INFER=1 and the Triton consumers bound.
Call chain: SeZMModel.forward -> forward_common_lower -> core_compute -> forward_with_edges (sezm.py:1809) -> build_edge_cache_from_edges -> _build_edge_wigner.
Consequence: the flag's engagement on the model path — including the DP_CUDA_INFER interaction above and the band's use by the flash aggregation — has no regression guard; the kernel-level bitwise tests and the nlist end-to-end test cover the pieces, not this wiring.

The unreachable D_packed preference in the zonal gather is removed with the invariant stated: the descriptor builds the coupling eagerly in banded mode, so a None coupling implies dense surfaces. A set-but- inert DP_PACKED_D_INFER (typically DP_CUDA_INFER selecting the CUDA Wigner calculator) now logs a one-shot warning instead of silently building dense surfaces. eval_embedding freezes model parameters around its forward, matching the frozen context the energy/force entry runs under, so the no-grad embedding path no longer trips the admission gate. Tests: forward_band_fused routes through the registered operator under the supported ladder (the production call site, previously only tested via hand-built operator arguments); the forward_with_edges model entry builds the band under the same gate as the nlist entry; and the inert flag warns exactly once.

The flash aggregation kernels already accept a packed(E, 3*D - 2)rotation layout (it is what the CUDA backend'sedge_runsproduces); this PR adds the missing top half — producing the band at the edge-cache layer and routing every fused Triton consumer to it — behind the opt-inDP_PACKED_D_INFERenvironment variable (default off).WignerDCalculator.forward_bandassembles the(E, 3*D-2)band from the same per-degree blocks the dense layout scatters (per-degree ladder only,lmax < poly_lmin).EdgeFeatureCachegains aD_packedfield; when the flag is on and supported, the denseD_full/Dt_fullare never materialized.elsebranch keeps the dense arithmetic bit-for-bit, so the default path is unchanged.Dis exactly the set ofDtcolumns it reads); the GIE zonal coupling reads them = 0segment.The stored values are the same floats in a different order, so consumer outputs are bit-identical.

New
TestSeZMTritonWignerBand(3 tests: band-vs-dense layout, operator-level bitwise forward/backward, value-path-level bitwise two-state with a shared cotangent). Fullsource/tests/pt/model/test_descriptor_sezm_triton.py: 40 passed, 1 pre-existing skip.Note: the packed branch of the edge-block rotate-mix backward follows the same addressing pattern as the per-edge variant but is currently unreachable (the default
rotate_mix_bwd_blockwin-list is empty until the tile sweep populates it).Summary by CodeRabbit
