Fix CallDecoder.decode_inputs crash and Optional return hints - #68
The bug is in the Python wrapper layer (hypersync/__init__.py) #55:CallDecoder.decode_inputs passed the input builtin through instead of inputs, so it raised TypeError: ... 'builtin_function_or_method' ... cannot be converted to 'Sequence'. decode_inputs_sync called decode_input_syncs, which doesn't exist, so it raised AttributeError. Neither method could ever succeed.
Fix CallDecoder type hints/docs for "None" results #56: all six CallDecoder decode methods now return list[Optional[list[DecodedSolValue]]], matching the Rust binding (Vec<Option<Vec<_>>>). Docstrings, which were copy-pasted from the log Decoder, now describe calldata and say when an entry is None.
Adds tests/test_call_decoder.py, which needs no network, and a Test workflow that builds the extension with maturin and runs pytest on PRs. The repo had no test CI before this.
Panic → None:CallDecoder returned an uncatchable PanicException (BaseException) for empty 0x calldata (every plain ETH transfer in decode_transactions_input), input shorter than a selector, a known selector with truncated args, or non-hex input. decode_impl in src/decode_call.rs now returns None for these.
get_with_rate_limit is now typed Tuple[Optional[QueryResponse], RateLimitInfo]. The response is None on HTTP 429, as src/lib.rs already did.
The CHANGELOG has a Known issue entry: decoded values stay wrong until the Rust fix below is released and bumped in.
Upstream bug found while testing
With the wrapper fixed, the decoded values were still wrong: transfer(0x…dEaD, 1000) came back as 0x0000…0000 and a huge number. hypersync_client::CallDecoder::decode_input passes the whole calldata, including the 4-byte selector, to alloy's abi_decode_input, so every argument is shifted by 4 bytes. It also panics on calldata shorter than 4 bytes, such as 0x for a plain ETH transfer. A fix is going up separately in hypersync-client-rust. test_decode_inputs_values is marked xfail(strict=True), so it will fail loudly once the fixed crate is bumped here; drop the marker then.
Test plan
pytest tests: 6 passed, 1 xfailed
The new malformed-calldata tests against the old decode_impl: 4 failed (panics)
The same tests against unmodified main: 2 failed, with the TypeError and AttributeError from the issue
Review
The PR was reviewed by a Claude subagent and by Codex (gpt-6-astra, ultra effort). Their findings that are addressed in 785cb14:
Panics on short/malformed calldata, and the undocumented None cases
The CHANGELOG claimed the decoder was fixed while its values were still wrong
No tests for malformed input
get_with_rate_limit hint (Codex)
Left for a follow-up because they're out of scope and unreachable today: the unused ArrowStream/EventStream/QueryResponseStream wrappers await self.inner.recv() without return, and the stream* return hints name those wrappers while the methods return the raw Rust stream.
decode_inputs passed the `input` builtin instead of `inputs`, and
decode_inputs_sync called a non-existent `decode_input_syncs`, so both
always raised. Return hints now reflect that entries are None when no
signature matches.
Adds offline pytest coverage and a Test workflow to run it on PRs.

Walkthrough
The CallDecoder input methods now forward raw inputs to the matching inner methods and use optional return annotations. Tests cover sync and async decoding, and a GitHub Actions workflow installs the extension and runs the test suite.
Changes: CallDecoder input decoding
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Decoder methods and return contracts hypersync/__init__.py, CHANGELOG.md
Raw-input methods now forward inputs to the matching inner methods. Input-decoding methods use optional return annotations and document when decoding returns None.
Decoder tests and CI workflow tests/test_call_decoder.py, .github/workflows/test.yml
Tests cover sync and async decoding of a known transfer input and an unmatched selector. A strict expected-failure test records the selector-stripping limitation. The workflow installs the extension and runs pytest.
The decoder methods now run, but short calldata can crash the process-level handling with a panic, and decoded argument values may be wrong until the upstream decoder is fixed. Add a short-input guard before merging, and decide whether to ship these methods with the known value-decoding limitation.

CallDecoder's decode_impl unwrapped hex and ABI-decode errors, and the
upstream decoder indexes input[0..4] unchecked, so empty (plain ETH
transfer), short, truncated or non-hex calldata raised an uncatchable
PanicException. These now decode to None, as documented.
Also types get_with_rate_limit's response as Optional (None on 429) and
notes in the changelog that decoded values stay wrong until the upstream
selector fix (hypersync-client-rust#144) is bumped in.
