Fax carries a scanned document between two machines over a telephone call, following the ITU-T T.30 protocol, or over an IP network with T.38. Banks, clinics, courts, and insurers still accept faxes, so developers keep writing fax servers, gateways, SDKs, and APIs that turn a PDF into pages, dial the number, and record whether every page arrived.
