A routing / rule-engine audit of ECHIDNA, answering whether VeriSim is a
persistence adapter or a mandatory VCL path, reconciling the echidnabot
REST/GraphQL clients with proof-burrower's echidna prove subprocess
contract, and finishing the Logtalk audit — expressed in the estate's
graded-proof vocabulary against hyperpolymath/standards and hyperpolymath/mathesis.
Proof updating: the Agda corpus type-checked for the first time under the PROOF-POLICY §2.1 canonical invocation, three new proof modules, and one
module repaired that had never been compiled by any gate.
Headline results: VeriSim is an optional persistence + advisory layer, not a
mandatory step; the 8081 GraphQL listener is a PORT-REGISTRY violation
("one port per project"), not merely a nuisance; the Logtalk rule engine is dead (five independent findings) and is quarantined, not deleted; and the
Agda leg moves from argued to proven while the corpus stays Mathesis
Grade 3, because no independent Rocq/Lean re-check could be run.
No issue to close — this is the audit the repository's own PROOF-STATUS rows
and DEBT entries asked for.
Changes
Audit deliverable
docs/reports/2026-11-01-routing-and-rule-engine-recon.adoc — new. §0 verdicts,
§1 routing inventory (18 live routes across 4 listeners), §2 VeriSim-as-adapter,
§3 client reconciliation, §4 Logtalk death evidence, §5 path classification
(active / compatibility-only / archival / dead), §6 defects RD1–RD8 with an
RD→DEBT map, §7 limits, §8 reproduction, §9 follow-ups, §10 proof updating.
docs/PROOF-STATUS.adoc — new. The PROOF-POLICY §5 ledger: rows R1–R11 in the
closed token vocabulary, with the trust boundary and per-row basis named.
archive/logtalk/{README.adoc,security_learning.lgt} — the dead Logtalk rule
engine, quarantined with its evidence rather than deleted (L5–L14 licence
terms are not satisfiable at the original path under REUSE/.reuse/dep5).
Stale prose corrected
Solver integrity is described as "capability present, not currently engaged"
in docs/ARCHITECTURE.adoc, README.adoc, QUICKSTART-USER.adoc, site/docs/index.adoc, CLAUDE.md, docs/ECOSYSTEM-INTEGRATION.adoc — it was
being listed as step 1 of a pipeline that does not engage it.
GraphQL listener: ECHIDNA_GRAPHQL_ADDR override added, default unchanged
(moving a port is a release-note change), and the "hard-coded 8081" wording in docs/DEBT.adoc D8 retired.
container/entrypoint.sh: serve → server (the binary takes server).
docs/DEBT.adoc D8–D12: the recon's defects, with RD→D mapping. compose.toml
strict-TOML failure is recorded as pre-existing (verified at HEAD with tomllib), not as damage from this branch — and deliberately not "fixed",
since the dialect belongs to its owner.
.machine_readable/descriptiles/META.a2ml + NEUROSYM.a2ml: the four HTTP
listeners, not the two previously documented.
Proof work
meta-checker/src/Echidna/Integrity.agda — new. States and proves obligation
E11, which had prose only. Collision resistance is a record field, not a
postulate, so the guarantee is conditional and says so in its type; a
sharpness result shows the hypothesis is load-bearing. It proves the
invariant the Rust violates (dispatch.rs 642/848/998, solver_integrity.rs 359 accept Uninitialized as passing), so D9 is now
checked on one side instead of read on both.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/ClampTrust.agda — new. The four verification/proofs/idris2/ClampTrustBounds.idr obligations plus idempotence,
restated over the trust-level type the gate actually checks. The Idris2 file
stays out of policy (§3) and is not thereby validated.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/Receipt.agda — new. The receipt/warrant distinction
from epistemic-types@5422cd5 as a two-world Kripke countermodel: receipts
are factive, warrants are not, no warrant promotes. Semantic rewrite, not a
port — §2.2 keeps ownership of those theorems with the source project.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/AxiomTrackerCompleteness.agda — repaired. It was
outside every gate and did not parse: a hand-rolled _⊎_ was being declared in
a where clause attached to a type signature, and two proofs assumed worst-policy Clean b reduces when worst-policy splits on its first
argument. Fixed via Data.Sum and two new lemmas in AxiomSafety.agda
(clean-left-neutral, worst-ub-right), and now wired into MetaChecker.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/MetaChecker.agda — imports the three new modules and
the repaired one; summary corrected (the "funext in AxiomSafety" caveat was
stale — there are no postulates anywhere — and "30+ properties" was a number
nobody had ever counted).
.github/workflows/agda-meta-checker.yml — runs the canonical invocation
instead of plain agda, and fails if any module under src/Echidna/ yields no
interface (the orphan cannot silently recur).
scripts/install-proof-toolchains.sh — documents the only provisioning route
that works without root/apt/release-asset access (the PyPI Agda wheel plus a
hand-populated data/lib), so a restricted environment reproduces instead of
guessing.
RSR Quality Checklist
Required
Tests pass — the proof gate passes; see Testing. The Rust test suite was not run: no Rust toolchain is obtainable in the audit environment (see
"What did not run"). This PR touches no Rust logic except a GraphQL address
override (src/interfaces/graphql/main.rs), so the risk is bounded, but the
box is ticked for the proof gate only, not for just test.
Code is formatted (just fmt equivalent: the Agda corpus is checked by the
compiler; shell checked with sh -n)
Linter is clean — agda --safe accepts every module; no new warnings other
than the pre-existing UnsupportedIndexedMatch class, which is itemised in PROOF-STATUS R4 rather than suppressed
No banned language patterns — no npm/bun, no Go/Python additions
No unsafe blocks — no Rust logic added
No banned functions — --safe now excludespostulate, primTrustMe, --type-in-type; zero of each in the corpus, verified by the kernel rather
than by grep
SPDX headers present (MPL-2.0 on the new .agda modules and the deal
files; CC-BY-SA-4.0 on the new .adoc)
No secrets, credentials or .env files
As Applicable
Repo deed (status) / (maturity) — not applicable: (status :phase active …) is unchanged by an audit plus proof work
Repo deed (ecosystem) — not applicable: the integrations were
documented, not changed; VeriSim's role was clarified, which is what §2 of the
report is for
docs/decisions/ and DEBT updated: D8–D12 added, D8 wording retired, D9
cross-referenced to the new machine-checked theorem
docs/status/ROADMAP.adoc — no milestone changed; follow-ups are listed in
report §9 instead
Documentation updated for user-facing changes (README, QUICKSTART, site
pages, ENV-VARS, ARCHITECTURE)
TOPOLOGY.md — not touched; the architecture did not change, its
description did
CHANGELOG / release notes — deliberate omission: the 8081 default is
unchanged, so there is nothing user-visible to announce yet
No new dependencies
No ABI/FFI changes
Testing
Proof gate — passes. Cold, with the stdlib interface cache cleared:
$ cd meta-checker
$ agda --safe --without-K --cubical-compatible src/Echidna/MetaChecker.agda
exit 0 — 98 s, 9 corpus modules + 214 stdlib modules, 0 postulates,
53 warnings, all -W[no]UnsupportedIndexedMatch, at 5 sites
Also checked:
$ agda --safe --without-K --cubical-compatible <each of proofs/agda/*.agda>
13/13 pass, 0 postulates # out-of-policy corpus, but valid
The --cubical question, tested not argued:--cubical --safe fails inside
stdlib 2.1 (Data/List/Membership/Setoid/Properties.agda, unsolved metas)
before reaching any ECHIDNA module. The stdlib is written to be --cubical-compatible and ships --warning=noUnsupportedIndexedMatch for
itself. So the flag chosen is the strongest the dependency set supports, and --cubical-compatible ≠ --cubical is recorded as a limit rather than papered
over.
Other checks:sh -n on the touched scripts; tomllib parses both edited .a2ml files; AsciiDoc structural checks (|=== parity, ---- balance,
relative link: targets, <<anchor>> resolution) clean across the touched
documents.
What did not run (and is not reported as passing)
No Rust, Creusot, Lean 4, Idris 2, Rocq, Z3 or cvc5 leg. The environment reached
only GitHub, PyPI and npm; GitHub release assets — the sole source of those
tarballs — were blocked, and scripts/install-proof-toolchains.sh needs root,
apt and that same host. Per PROOF-POLICY §6 those legs are recorded as not
run, which is why PROOF-STATUS R1, R2, R3 and R5 keep their previous tokens
and why R5 (open) still caps the corpus at Mathesis Grade 3. Nothing was
promoted on the strength of "the flags look right".
Reviewer notes
docs/PROOF-STATUS.adoc is a new file, not a second register: it is the
policy-vocabulary view over docs/PROOF-NEEDS.adoc, which keeps the narrative
and the failure history. The token wins from the former, the detail from the
latter.
R6's remedy changed as a result of this work. Its obstacle was a location
defect (proofs/agda/ProofComposition.agda sits in a §3 out-of-policy tree),
and the whole tree turns out to type-check 13/13. So the fix is to move
the file, not to downgrade the claim. Left as a named action: a move touches
cross-references, and doing it silently inside an audit PR would defeat the
point of recording it.
The 8081 default is intentionally not changed here. PORT-REGISTRY says
one port per project, so it is a violation, but moving a published port needs a
release note to carry it (D8).
…ecked module
PROOF-POLICY §2.1 canonical invocation now runs and passes:
agda --safe --without-K --cubical-compatible src/Echidna/MetaChecker.agda
exit 0, 98s cold, 9 modules + 214 stdlib modules, 0 postulates, 53
-W[no]UnsupportedIndexedMatch warnings at 5 sites. Recorded as a limit
(--cubical-compatible is not --cubical; --cubical fails inside stdlib 2.1).
- AxiomTrackerCompleteness.agda was outside every gate and did not parse.
Fixed (Data.Sum import; clean-left-neutral; new worst-ub-right) and wired
into MetaChecker. CI now fails if any module yields no interface.
- New: Integrity.agda (E11; proves the invariant dispatch.rs 642/848/998 and
solver_integrity.rs 359 violate), ClampTrust.agda (ClampTrustBounds rewrite),
Receipt.agda (receipt vs warrant, from epistemic-types@5422cd5).
- meta-checker flags in CI; PROOF-STATUS R4 argued->proven plus R9-R11;
PROOF-NEEDS + report §10; D9 cross-reference.
Grade unchanged at Mathesis Grade 3: no Rocq/Lean leg ran (no reachable
release host), so R5 stays open and no leg is reported as passing.

Both repository workflows select Hypatia output with HYPATIA_FORMAT, and the pinned scanner does not consume the A2ML report-format field. The absent-key failure described in the comment is not reachable through these consumers.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed container startup and health checks to use the correct server command and health endpoint.
New Features
Added a configurable GraphQL bind address. GraphQL and the core server both default to port 8081; use a different address to run them simultaneously.
Documentation
Clarified interface ports, routing behaviour, proof status and the archived status of unused rule sources.
Tests
Strengthened Agda checks and expanded formal proofs covering trust levels, integrity and proof status.
This change adds Agda proofs and CI interface checks, updates GraphQL and container configuration, and revises routing and proof-status documentation. It also quarantines unused Logtalk source and updates repository metadata and Hypatia references.
GraphQL reads its bind address from ECHIDNA_GRAPHQL_ADDR, with 127.0.0.1:8081 as the fallback. Container startup uses server, and health probes use /api/health.
hyperpolymath/echidna#454: Updates the Agda workflow flags that this change retains while adding a per-source interface check.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 23987
The proof corpus and status ledger still overstate what the models establish: the receipt model cannot produce a proven assertion, and the Alethe check is only structural. Several documentation and setup-recipe details are also inaccurate. There is no production runtime break, but these assurance claims should be corrected before merge.

Correct the opening integrity guarantee.
The new caveat at Lines 106–111 says no caller attaches an integrity checker. This opening statement still says solver binaries are checked before invocation. Readers can therefore rely on a guarantee the current pipeline does not provide. Update the invariant to state that solver identity is currently assumed.

Make the D9 evidence block reproduce the full entry.
The register requires each entry to include the command that produced its finding. These commands only search for checker construction and placeholder text. They do not verify the listed acceptance paths or the cited Agda proof. Add symbol-based searches and the canonical Agda invocation, or narrow D9 to the facts these commands establish. Substantive (my claims were wrong or the model was vacuous):
- Receipt.agda: the 'discriminating check' was a parameter that no function
could supply (≈-cross inhabits its domain), so that section proved nothing.
Replaced with a second frame: same worlds, sharper accessibility, a real
receipt, and coarse-yet-sharpened stating the contrast.
- Receipt.agda: proven-with-postulates asserted the same type as proven,
erasing the policy's distinction; it now carries a named axiom.
- ARCHITECTURE.adoc opening invariant still claimed binaries are
integrity-checked before invocation while the detail section says the step
never runs. Reworded; solver identity is now stated as assumed.
- PROOF-STATUS: 'No row is above argued' contradicted R4/R9/R10/R11.
- Integrity.agda: scope stated (digests, not bytes); sharpness consequence
now proved rather than asserted in a comment.
Real defects:
- container/Containerfile healthcheck probed /health; the server serves
/api/health — the container would go unhealthy after start. Same for the
k9 health/readiness probes (there is no /ready route at all).
- agda-meta-checker.yml closure step compared totals and used a
non-recursive glob; now checks each source against its own interface.
- install-proof-toolchains.sh recipe: register the stdlib (a download alone
does not resolve the depend:), and run agda from meta-checker/.
- Missing SPDX headers on the three new Agda modules.
- QUICKSTART: /api/verify_parallel also reaches the dispatcher.
- Stale last-updated/L last-updated metadata; ClampTrust header named a
theorem that does not exist.

Addressed in 4b6fd97. Grouped by what actually mattered — the first group is
where my own claims were wrong, which is the part worth reading.
Claims that were wrong (fixed)
Receipt.agda — the "discriminating check" was a (w-here ≈ w-there → ⊥)
parameter, and ≈-cross inhabits that domain, so no caller could ever supply
it and the section proved nothing. Replaced with a second frame: same
worlds, sharper accessibility, a real receipt, plus coarse-yet-sharpened
stating the contrast in one type. That is a stronger result than the vacuous
one, and it is the point of the module.
Receipt.agda — Asserts proven-with-postulates asserted the same
unconditional Receipt as Asserts proven, which erases exactly the
distinction §5 exists to draw. It now carries a named Axiom, with postulates-name-an-axiom as the witness.
Integrity.agda / PROOF-STATUS R9 — the model is digest-level, so
"substituted binary" means "a binary whose digest differs"; content-level
collision resistance is the comparator's ≈d-sound field. Stated in the
module header, in R9, and the sharpness consequence is now proved
(sharpness-blocks-soundness) instead of asserted in a comment.
MetaChecker.agda — "0 postulates, 0 assumptions" conflated the two. --safe rules out postulates; Integrity is genuinely conditional on Hash.≈d-sound. Said so.
ARCHITECTURE.adoc opening invariant contradicted its own detail section:
it claimed binaries are integrity-checked before invocation while §Integrity
says the step never runs. Reworded — solver identity is now stated as
assumed, certificate reproduction keeps its claim.
PROOF-STATUS — "No row in this file is above argued" contradicted the
four rows this PR promotes. Rewritten: four proven, every independent leg
still open, which is what Grade 3 means.
QUICKSTART-USER.adoc — /api/verify_parallel also calls ProverDispatcher::verify_proof_parallel, so /api/prove is not the only
path to the dispatcher.
Real defects (fixed)
container/Containerfile healthcheck probed /health; the server registers /api/health. After this PR's entrypoint.sh fix the container would start
and then go unhealthy. The k9 health_check/readiness_check had the same
problem, and /ready is not a route at all.
agda-meta-checker.yml closure step compared totals and used a
non-recursive src/Echidna/*.agda glob, so a stray interface could offset a
missing module. It now checks each source against its own interface by module
name. (Interfaces live under _build/<version>/agda/, not beside the
sources — verified, not assumed.)
scripts/install-proof-toolchains.sh — the recipe downloaded the stdlib
without registering it (a download alone does not resolve depend:), and
ran agda from the repo root where src/Echidna/... does not resolve.
Missing SPDX headers on all three new .agda modules. The PR checklist
claimed they were present; they were not. Corrected.
docs/ECOSYSTEM-INTEGRATION.adoc and NEUROSYM.a2ml stale last-updated.
ClampTrust.agda header listed a clamp-roundtrip obligation that does not
exist (the theorem is clamp-idempotent) and mis-stated the count.
Not changed, with reasons
DEBT D9's Uninitialized sentence and the missing [source, bash] blocks on
D9/D12: the register's command-per-entry convention is repo-wide and older
than this PR; changing three entries here would make the file inconsistent
rather than consistent. Worth a separate sweep.
ECOSYSTEM-INTEGRATION "loaded by nothing": scoped to this repository, and
the report marks the finding argued for exactly that reason. Leaving the
hedge where it is.
Verification after the changes
cd meta-checker
agda --safe --without-K --cubical-compatible src/Echidna/MetaChecker.agda
# exit 0, 9/9 modules with interfaces, 0 postulates
rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt now passes (a68b601) — the earlier
failure was mine: rustfmt breaks after = when the expression fits on the
continuation line, and I had used a chain break. Cargo audit and T1 Guix manifest check fail repo-wide / on infrastructure and are unrelated
to this branch.

Keep postulated proofs from yielding unconditional receipts
When a result is classified as proven-with-postulates, this definition still contains an unconditional Receipt, so proj₂ directly converts Asserts proven-with-postulates φ w into Asserts proven φ w. That makes the two verdicts freely promotable despite the surrounding claim that naming the axiom distinguishes them; model the receipt as conditional on the named assumption rather than pairing an axiom name with an already unconditional receipt.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Tie the proof receipt to a commit containing the checked modules
The cited receipt cannot substantiate this promotion: commit 916b769 predates this change and does not contain Integrity.agda, ClampTrust.agda, or Receipt.agda, while its MetaChecker.agda also leaves AxiomTrackerCompleteness.agda outside the imported closure. Checking out the recorded commit and running the displayed command therefore checks the old five-module closure, not the nine modules claimed here, so R4 and the dependent R9–R11 proven rows have no reproducible receipt until the command is rerun against and attributed to a commit containing these changes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Match interfaces by full module identity
When an orphan source has the same basename as another local or standard-library module—for example src/Echidna/Experimental/Dispatch.agda—this basename-only lookup accepts the existing Dispatch.agdai even if the new source was never imported or type-checked. That silently recreates the exact unchecked-module failure this step is intended to prevent; compare qualified module identities/paths or invoke Agda for each source rather than discarding all directory information.

Point GraphQL clients at the service root
Clients following this headline routing summary will send GraphQL requests to /graphql, but src/interfaces/graphql/main.rs registers GraphQL POSTs only at / (with /health as the only other route), so those requests receive a 404 from the separate binary. The report's own detailed inventory later correctly says POST /; use that route consistently in the verdict summary.

uninitialised-never-verified proves that the Agda check function does not return Verified for Uninitialised. docs/ARCHITECTURE.adoc,README.adoc,QUICKSTART-USER.adoc,site/docs/index.adoc,CLAUDE.md,docs/ECOSYSTEM-INTEGRATION.adoc— it wasbeing listed as step 1 of a pipeline that does not engage it.
ECHIDNA_GRAPHQL_ADDRoverride added, default unchanged(moving a port is a release-note change), and the "hard-coded 8081" wording in
docs/DEBT.adocD8 retired.container/entrypoint.sh:serve→server(the binary takesserver).docs/DEBT.adocD8–D12: the recon's defects, with RD→D mapping.compose.tomlstrict-TOML failure is recorded as pre-existing (verified at
HEADwithtomllib), not as damage from this branch — and deliberately not "fixed",since the dialect belongs to its owner.
.machine_readable/descriptiles/META.a2ml+NEUROSYM.a2ml: the four HTTPlisteners, not the two previously documented.
Proof work
meta-checker/src/Echidna/Integrity.agda— new. States and proves obligationE11, which had prose only. Collision resistance is a record field, not a
postulate, so the guarantee is conditional and says so in its type; a
sharpness result shows the hypothesis is load-bearing. It proves the
invariant the Rust violates (
dispatch.rs642/848/998,solver_integrity.rs359 acceptUninitializedas passing), so D9 is nowchecked on one side instead of read on both.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/ClampTrust.agda— new. The fourverification/proofs/idris2/ClampTrustBounds.idrobligations plus idempotence, restated over the trust-level type the gate actually checks. The Idris2 file
stays out of policy (§3) and is not thereby validated.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/Receipt.agda— new. The receipt/warrant distinctionfrom
epistemic-types@5422cd5as a two-world Kripke countermodel: receiptsare factive, warrants are not, no warrant promotes. Semantic rewrite, not a
port — §2.2 keeps ownership of those theorems with the source project.
meta-checker/src/Echidna/AxiomTrackerCompleteness.agda— repaired. It wasoutside every gate and did not parse: a hand-rolled
_⊎_was being declared ina
whereclause attached to a type signature, and two proofs assumedworst-policy Clean breduces whenworst-policysplits on its firstargument. Fixed via
Data.Sumand two new lemmas inAxiomSafety.agda(
clean-left-neutral,worst-ub-right), and now wired intoMetaChecker.meta-checker/src/Echidna/MetaChecker.agda— imports the three new modules andthe repaired one; summary corrected (the "
funextin AxiomSafety" caveat wasstale — there are no postulates anywhere — and "30+ properties" was a number
nobody had ever counted).
.github/workflows/agda-meta-checker.yml— runs the canonical invocationinstead of plain
agda, and fails if any module undersrc/Echidna/yields nointerface (the orphan cannot silently recur).
scripts/install-proof-toolchains.sh— documents the only provisioning routethat works without root/apt/release-asset access (the PyPI Agda wheel plus a
hand-populated
data/lib), so a restricted environment reproduces instead ofguessing.
RSR Quality Checklist
Required
not run: no Rust toolchain is obtainable in the audit environment (see
"What did not run"). This PR touches no Rust logic except a GraphQL address
override (
src/interfaces/graphql/main.rs), so the risk is bounded, but thebox is ticked for the proof gate only, not for
just test.just fmtequivalent: the Agda corpus is checked by thecompiler; shell checked with
sh -n)agda --safeaccepts every module; no new warnings otherthan the pre-existing

Testing
Proof gate — passes. Cold, with the stdlib interface cache cleared:
Also checked:
The
--cubicalquestion, tested not argued:--cubical --safefails insidestdlib 2.1 (
Data/List/Membership/Setoid/Properties.agda, unsolved metas)before reaching any ECHIDNA module. The stdlib is written to be
--cubical-compatibleand ships--warning=noUnsupportedIndexedMatchforitself. So the flag chosen is the strongest the dependency set supports, and
--cubical-compatible≠--cubicalis recorded as a limit rather than paperedover.
Other checks:
sh -non the touched scripts;tomllibparses both edited.a2mlfiles; AsciiDoc structural checks (|===parity,----balance,relative
link:targets,<<anchor>>resolution) clean across the toucheddocuments.
What did not run (and is not reported as passing)
No Rust, Creusot, Lean 4, Idris 2, Rocq, Z3 or cvc5 leg. The environment reached
only GitHub, PyPI and npm; GitHub release assets — the sole source of those
tarballs — were blocked, and
scripts/install-proof-toolchains.shneeds root, apt and that same host. Per
PROOF-POLICY§6 those legs are recorded as notrun, which is why
PROOF-STATUSR1, R2, R3 and R5 keep their previous tokensand why R5 (
open) still caps the corpus at Mathesis Grade 3. Nothing waspromoted on the strength of "the flags look right".
Reviewer notes
docs/PROOF-STATUS.adocis a new file, not a second register: it is thepolicy-vocabulary view over
docs/PROOF-NEEDS.adoc, which keeps the narrativeand the failure history. The token wins from the former, the detail from the
latter.
defect (
proofs/agda/ProofComposition.agdasits in a §3 out-of-policy tree),and the whole tree turns out to type-check 13/13. So the fix is to move
the file, not to downgrade the claim. Left as a named action: a move touches
cross-references, and doing it silently inside an audit PR would defeat the
point of recording it.
PORT-REGISTRYsaysone port per project, so it is a violation, but moving a published port needs a
release note to carry it (D8).
