instructlab-training hardcodes CUDA, so training fails on Intel XPUs before it reaches the model. check_valid_train_args() probes the CUDA device capability for flash-attn and raises:
AssertionError: Torch not compiled with CUDA enabled
at src/instructlab/training/model.py:464 (supports_flash_attention)
This PR makes the device-specific calls work on CUDA or XPU. CUDA and CPU-only hosts behave exactly as before.
device_utils.py (new): device type (xpu only when an XPU is present and CUDA is not, otherwise cuda as before), the matching torch.cuda / torch.xpu module, and the per-rank device. INSTRUCTLAB_TRAINING_DEVICE forces a type.
Device calls routed through it:set_device, the startup all_reduce tensor, batch and validation devices, the on-demand-checkpoint trigger tensor, empty_cache, manual_seed_all, the FSDP device count and memory metrics. Metric keys keep their cuda_* names so existing dashboards still work; the values come from the active accelerator. The process group already uses PyTorch's default backend, so XPU gets XCCL without changes.
Flash Attention (2nd commit): XPU keeps the same padding-free (packed) path as CUDA. The flash_attn package has no XPU build, but the Hugging Face hub kernel kernels-community/flash-attn2 does. It's used as XPU's attn_implementation (kernels>=0.9.0 in the new xpu extra, as in the cuda extra). If it can't be loaded (no kernels package, offline), training falls back to SDPA with a warning; SDPA also keeps packed sequences isolated through position_ids. GPT-OSS uses eager on XPU, since flash-attn3 (attention sinks) has no XPU build. disable_flash_attn=True still selects the padded path, as on CUDA. (The first commit had turned flash off on XPU, which also switched training to the padded batching path.)
num_alloc_retries:torch.xpu.memory_stats() has no such key. It's now read with a default of 0, instead of raising KeyError on the first logged step.
Teardown hang: with XCCL, destroy_process_group() blocks forever while forked DataLoader workers are alive (num_workers=8, persistent_workers=True). I narrowed this down with a standalone script: it hangs only while persistent workers are alive, and returns once they are stopped. The workers are now stopped before the process group is destroyed. Training is complete at that point, so this is harmless on other backends.
xpu extra (requirements-xpu.txt):torch==2.13.0+xpu (the validated build) and kernels>=0.9.0. The XPU torch build is published on the PyTorch XPU index only, so install with:
(checked in a clean venv: resolves torch-2.13.0+xpu; without the index URL, pip can't find that version). requirements-xpu.txt is deliberately not in requirements-files.in: the weekly constraints job compiles those files from PyPI only, against torch<2.7.0 in constraints-dev.txt.in, so it can't resolve an XPU torch pin. Reproduced locally with the job's uv pip compile command: unsatisfiable with the file listed, fine without it.
Tests
tests/unit/test_device_utils.py (new) covers:
device selection, the flash path being kept on XPU (without probing CUDA), the memory-stat default and worker shutdown. These are mocked and run anywhere;
attention selection and the SDPA fallback (mocked);
two real-XPU tests, marked xpu (registered in pyproject.toml):
teardown: runs an XCCL group with live DataLoader workers and checks that destroy_process_group() returns. With the fix disabled it fails instead of hanging;
packed attention: with the selected kernel, packed sequences give the same logits as separate ones (max diff 0.0000), with a no-isolation negative control (0.55).

The 4 failures happen on main too, in this environment: tensorboard and wandb aren't installed, and test_model_with_lora / test_accelerator_with_lora break against the installed trl version. None are device-related.
ruff check, ruff format --check, isort --check, pylint (10.00/10) and mypy are clean on the changed files.
Not tested: real CUDA hardware (no CUDA machine was available; CUDA paths are unchanged and covered by mocked tests), DeepSpeed, and multi-XPU / multi-node runs. GPT-OSS on XPU (eager) was not run; its packed-attention isolation was checked on a small model with eager attention.
Training hardcoded CUDA, so it failed on Intel XPUs before reaching the model:
check_valid_train_args() probes torch.cuda.get_device_capability() and raises
"Torch not compiled with CUDA enabled" on XPU builds of torch.
- device_utils.py (new): device type ("xpu" only when an XPU is present and
CUDA is not; otherwise "cuda" as before), torch.cuda/torch.xpu module,
per-rank device. INSTRUCTLAB_TRAINING_DEVICE forces a type.
- set_device, the startup all_reduce tensor, validation/batch devices, the
on-demand-checkpoint trigger tensor, empty_cache, manual_seed_all, FSDP
device_count and memory metrics go through it. Metric keys keep their
cuda_* names; values come from the active accelerator.
- Flash Attention: flash_attn has no XPU build, so on XPU
check_flash_attn_enabled() returns False (with a warning) and training
uses the existing padded, non-flash batching path.
- num_alloc_retries: torch.xpu.memory_stats() has no such key; read with a
default of 0 instead of raising KeyError on the first logged step.
- Teardown: with XCCL, destroy_process_group() blocks indefinitely while
forked DataLoader workers are alive (num_workers=8, persistent_workers),
so stop them before destroying the process group. Training is complete
at that point, so this is harmless on other backends.
Tests: tests/unit/test_device_utils.py covers device selection, the
flash-attn fallback, the memory-stats default and worker shutdown, plus a
real-XPU teardown test (marked `xpu`). The teardown test fails on the
previous code instead of hanging.

Walkthrough
The training package now selects CUDA or Intel XPU through shared device utilities and uses the selected device in training, checkpoint, model, and utility paths. Training shutdown stops persistent DataLoader workers before synchronization and process-group destruction. The change adds unit and XPU-gated tests.

New helpers select a device from the environment or accelerator availability and provide an XPU attention implementation with an SDPA fallback. The XPU dependency and pytest marker are added. Tests cover selection, allocation retries, attention behavior, and packed-sequence behavior.
Device-aware training operations src/instructlab/training/accelerator.py, src/instructlab/training/batch_loss_manager.py, src/instructlab/training/gpt_oss_utils_correct.py, src/instructlab/training/main_ds.py, src/instructlab/training/on_demand_checkpoint.py, src/instructlab/training/utils.py
Training, checkpoint, model, and utility paths use the selected device for device placement, device counts, memory metrics, cache clearing, and seeding.
Training shuts down persistent DataLoader workers before the distributed barrier and process-group destruction. Tests cover worker shutdown and an XCCL teardown subprocess.
On a supported Transformers 4.57.1 install, Intel XPU training silently falls back to SDPA instead of the intended flash-attention kernel. GPT-OSS training on XPU can also mix context across packed samples, which degrades training quality. Both should be fixed before merge.

Exercise the production teardown path in the XPU ordering test.
The XPU test calls _shutdown_dataloader_workers() and dist.destroy_process_group() directly. It does not call the training teardown that contains the production ordering. The test can therefore pass if that production call is removed or moved after dist.destroy_process_group(). Add a focused test that reaches the main_ds teardown sequence and asserts that DataLoader workers stop before process-group destruction.

Select XCCL explicitly for XPU runs.
When INSTRUCTLAB_TRAINING_DEVICE=xpu selects XPU, pass backend="xccl" to dist.init_process_group(). The first XPU change turned flash attention off on XPU, which also switched
training to the padded batching path (different packer and collator). XPU
now uses the same padding-free path as CUDA:
- check_flash_attn_enabled() returns True on XPU (disable_flash_attn=True
still selects the padded path, as on CUDA).
- Attention: the Hugging Face hub kernel kernels-community/flash-attn2,
which has Intel XPU builds, is the XPU counterpart of flash_attention_2.
If it can't be loaded (no `kernels` package, offline), SDPA is used; it
keeps packed sequences isolated through position_ids.
- GPT-OSS needs flash-attn3, which has no XPU build: eager on XPU.
- The flash_attn package check applies to CUDA/ROCm only.
- New `xpu` extra (requirements-xpu.txt): kernels>=0.9.0, as in the cuda extra.
Tests: attention selection and fallback (mocked), and a real-XPU test that
packed sequences produce the same logits as separate ones with the selected
kernel (with a no-isolation negative control).

Use a Hub-kernel API supported by the declared Transformers minimum.
With transformers==4.57.1, this import fails because that release provides load_and_register_kernel, not load_and_register_attn_kernel. The exception handler then selects SDPA even when the XPU kernel is installed. The tests that patch the absent symbol also fail on that supported version. Use a version-compatible API and update those tests, or raise the Transformers minimum. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not pair GPT-OSS eager attention with packed batches.
On XPU, the default flash-enabled path selects packed batches, but this branch selects GPT-OSS eager attention. In the supported Transformers 4.57.1 implementation, GPT-OSS does not pass position_ids to causal-mask construction. Reset positions therefore do not isolate packed samples, and later samples can attend to earlier samples during training. Select padded batching for this branch, or supply a block-diagonal attention mask. Add a GPT-OSS isolation check alongside the Llama check. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
