feat(voice): underline the transcript by its packets - #206
The voice demo's packet chart read poorly (overprinted words, a hatch of flight lines, a legend for states you rarely saw). This replaces it with the transcript itself: each word is underlined by its own audio, one segment per 20 ms packet.
Your words: green once the agent has the packet, amber where one reached it after a later packet (retransmitted or reordered), dark while in flight.
Speech not yet words: a bar of your packets grows from your last recognized word, or from when the reply last stopped playing, up to now, and gives way as interim and final words land. It hides while the reply plays (the player's stalled signal), so it starts over after each reply or barge-in. Interim words are underlined too.
The agent's words: grey text, so green only means packets; dim green as the reply lands in your buffer, well ahead of the playhead, then solid as you hear it. A barge-in turns what it cut off grey and fades the words that were never said. Red marks a packet that missed MoQ's own playout deadline or will never arrive.
Words are matched to voice.json's timed words in order, ignoring case and punctuation. voice.json leaves out any word it could not time (VOICE.md), so a word with no match simply has no underline. @moq/watch reports a frame through arrivals() only as playback nears it, so the player's buffered ranges stand in for frames already held.
CallLog keeps only what the underlines read: arrivals (now flagged when reordered), words, the latest interim result, when the reply last stopped playing, publishes and retirements, reply frames, gaps, buffered ranges and the playhead. timeline.tsx, the LLM/TTS spans, statement(), answer() and the WebRTC lateness estimate are gone. The transcript moves into voice/transcript.tsx.
Consumer: the /voice page and the voice AI blog post's demo.
Testing
At c8e77d8: just check passes (the 13 existing biome warnings); just test passes (49 tests). New cases cover reordered arrivals, per-packet states (buffered, played, interrupted, another track's frame at the same media time) and alignment that skips words either side left out.
At the speech bar's head: just check passes; 30 voice unit tests pass, with new cases for the bar growing to now, giving way to interim and final words, and hiding while the reply plays.
Rendered the real component from a synthetic call (two retransmitted mic packets, a reply streamed 2.5x faster than real time with one lost packet, then a spoken barge-in) at 760 px and 375 px: underlines track the playhead, the cut-off words fade, and no console errors.
/voice and the blog post load and hydrate locally with no errors. Not exercised on a real call: Turnstile challenges headless browsers, and the local dev stack's fake providers emit no word timings.
The scrolling three-lane timeline becomes two bars, each fitted to its
latest utterance and replaced when the next starts. Your statement fills
in at the agent frame by frame, out-of-order arrivals marked, with a
slider at how far it has heard without a gap. The reply spans what the
agent has published, cached ahead of a playhead slider. The WebRTC
lateness estimate is gone; red now only marks a frame that missed MoQ's
own playout deadline. Words draw at 14px.

Stop the heard slider at a single missing frame
When one 20 ms mic frame is missing, this condition lets the heard slider advance past the gap: contiguous already includes the previous frame's duration, so the next received frame starts only 20 ms beyond it and passes the additional 30 ms tolerance. Exercising drawStatement with captures at 0, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ms reports the entire 120 ms statement as heard despite the missing frame at 20 ms. Compare against the expected next capture with a tolerance smaller than one frame so isolated losses and pending retransmissions actually hold the slider back.

Walkthrough
CallLog now tracks microphone frame ordering, reply buffering and playback, speech boundaries, and transcript alignment. It classifies sent, pending, and heard audio packets. The new Transcript component displays aligned speaker words, packet states, and pending user speech. VoiceDemo supplies the call log and live state to Transcript. The former Timeline component has been removed.

The decoder reports a frame through arrivals() only once playback nears
it, so the reply bar showed cached frames trailing the playhead even when
the whole reply sat in the player's buffer. Paint the player's buffered
ranges as cached too.

Preserve the heard prefix when pruning an active statement
When a statement lasts more than 60 seconds, the existing periodic call.prune(now) removes its earliest mic frames but retains the open speech interval. This loop then starts at the original statement start, treats the first retained frame as a gap, and resets the heard slider to zero permanently for that statement. Reproducing with 62 seconds of contiguous frames reports 62.0s of 62.0s heard before pruning and 0.0s of 62.0s heard afterward. Preserve the contiguous heard prefix across pruning, or retain the frames needed by the displayed statement. (Written by GPT-6.1 Sol)

Fixed in 4e5aad0: prune now keeps everything from the on-screen statement's start, so a statement past the 60 s window stays whole. A test with 70 s of frames reproduced the reset before the fix.

Preserve the latest reply's request boundary through pruning
When a call stays open for over 60 seconds after a completed LLM request, prune() removes its span while retaining publishes according to media time. asked then becomes undefined, so this loop includes older replies on the same track and the latest-utterance bar expands backward without a new reply. Reproducing with two completed requests publishing [0, 1000] and [1000, 2000], followed by a stalled playhead at 2000, changes answer() from [1000, 2000] to [0, 2000] after prune(70000). Preserve the request boundary needed by the displayed answer independently of the rolling span history. (Written by GPT-6.1 Sol)
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 13e4b13: prune keeps the LLM request that bounds the reply on screen, so the bar no longer widens backward after 60 s. A new test reproduces the widening without the fix.

Retain the turn markers that bound the displayed statement
When a statement spans multiple VAD speech intervals and lasts longer than 60 seconds, prune() removes its original your turn marker even though it now retains the statement's speech and mic frames. This fallback then switches the bar to only the latest speech interval. With speech starting at 5000, a pause, and speech resuming at 7000, calling prune(76000) changes statement(76000).start from 5000 to 7000 without a new turn; subsequent pruning also removes that prefix's frames. Preserve the turn markers needed to reconstruct the displayed statement alongside its retained data. (Written by GPT-6.1 Sol)

Fixed in 18fc725 by deleting prune(): a demo call lasts at most 300 s, so the log keeps everything and nothing the on-screen statement or reply needs can be dropped.

Preserve receipt history for the reply still on screen
If a call remains open for more than 60 seconds after a reply plays, prune() deletes its played reply frames while retaining its publishes according to the stalled media playhead. The new reply bar therefore still displays the same answer, but its cached total drops to zero and its green frames revert to the in-flight background. Reproducing with a fully received one-second reply, playhead(1000, 1000, false), and prune(62000) leaves answer() unchanged but removes all 50 received frames. Retain or summarize receipt history for the displayed answer so pruning does not present already-played audio as still in flight. (Written by GPT-6.1 Sol)

…n you stop
Labels that overprinted the previous word were dropped, so the word rows read
as a fragment of the transcript. They now stack into up to three lanes.
Your statement now runs from what you said since the agent's previous turn
until you stopped talking, counting STT words as well as VAD speech, so a reply
to a word too short for the VAD no longer merges with the statement before it.
Drop prune(): a demo call lasts at most 300 s, and pruning kept dropping
records the on-screen statement or reply still needed.

feat(voice): underline the transcript by its packets

The agent's VAD, turn, and interim records bound the speech the STT has
not recognized yet; a bar of its packets trails your words and gives way
as interim and final words land. Interim words get underlines too, and
the AI's text is grey so green only means delivered packets.

The VAD froze the bar at every pause. It now runs from your last
recognized word, or from when the reply last stopped playing, up to now,
and hides while the reply plays. The player's stall is the reply signal,
so the vad and turn records are no longer read.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…k gaps
- align() could not get past four or more timed words the transcript
left out; further ahead it now accepts a match when the next word
matches too.
- A frame ending exactly at a slot no longer holds that slot.
- A gap belongs to the reply track that held its media, so a barge-in's
replacement track does not inherit the retired track's losses.

…pdates
A non-keyed Show ran bar() once with a snapshot of the packets, so the
bar behind your words froze until the transcript changed. The bar now
reads the accessor inside its style.
