155-155: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winWait for reconciliation before asserting that revision 2 is absent.
ResourceIsAppliedwaits only forkubectl applyto finish. The repeatedProgressing=Falsecheck can match the condition from before the re-apply, and the not-found check returns while${NAME}-2is still absent. Tie the absence assertion to a reconciliation signal from the metadata-only re-apply so this scenario detects an incorrect revision creation. This is a test-coverage gap, not evidence of a current production failure or broken test workflow.

Do we need owner kind and owner name here? In the past, I think those were included on managed objects so that we could setup an informer that uses those for server-side filtering.
But we don't need to have object-controller filter COSs. It needs to cache all of them.

Good catch on owner-kind — it's never read anywhere (the historical server-side-filtering informer use is gone, and object-controller caches all ClusterObjectSets), so I dropped it from the generated revisions.
I kept owner-name though: it's still consumed — the ClusterObjectSet controller copies it from the COS onto every managed object (clusterobjectset_controller.go, in the phase-build loop: objLabels[labels.OwnerNameKey] = cos.Labels[labels.OwnerNameKey]), and the install e2e asserts managed objects carry it. Dropping it from the COD-created COS would propagate an empty owner-name="" onto managed objects unless we also guard that propagation. Happy to do that follow-up (drop it here + only propagate when non-empty) if you'd prefer the COD path not set it at all.

the ClusterObjectSet controller copies it from the COS onto every managed object
Maybe we should drop that and have COS just directly inject its own label? What if a standalone COS exists without that label?
Does the COS controller even need that label to be there? I thought the COS controller just uses the .spec.group index?

In orb-operator, it looks like the only label that ends up on managed objects is app.kubernetes.io/managed-by: <revisionEngineOptions.ManagedBy>

Sounds good. I lgtm/approved #3038. Does that mean we can go ahead and remove owner-name here now? Or do you want to do that separate as well?

I'll rebase and remove here as well - just waiting on the collisionProtection PR XD

Is there a race here between the controller running the reconcile for the annotation patch and our assertions?
How do we know that the COD has actually been reconciled again before we make these assertions?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
You're right, it's racy. An annotation-only re-apply doesn't bump the deployment's .metadata.generation, so there's no happens-after signal that the controller reconciled the unchanged template before the assertion — and in the failure case a buggy controller would renumber revisions such that even a "wait for rev2 Ready, then rev3 not found" barrier can false-pass. Making it genuinely race-free would need a content-based barrier plus a revision-count assertion (a new "COD owns N revisions" step).
Since the no-op-on-unchanged-template behavior is already covered deterministically by the Test_..._NoNewRevisionWhenTemplateUnchanged unit test (it reconciles twice and asserts no second revision), I removed the e2e scenario rather than ship a flaky one.

Give the ClusterObjectDeployment (COD) controller its first behavior, in the object-controller binary (experimental-only, //go:build !standard). It reconciles ClusterObjectDeployment objects and owns their ClusterObjectSet (COS) revisions. - Detect template changes via a template-hash label (shared hashutil.DeepHashObject, base36 of sha224 — label-safe, no truncation) and create a new Active COS revision (named <cod>-<revision>) owned by the COD when the template changes or no active revision exists. - Report rollout progress on the COD's Progressing condition, keyed off the latest matching revision's completedAt. - SetupWithManager: For(COD).Owns(COS).Watches(COS by spec.group); the shared .spec.group index setup moves to a dedicated indexes.go. - Surface AlreadyExists on revision create rather than tolerating it (matches the orb-operator reference; stale-cache retries self-heal on requeue). - Generated revisions carry only the template-hash label; ownership is expressed through the controller owner reference and spec.group. - Add a cod_rollout e2e feature and a Godog step for ClusterObjectDeployment conditions. Description
Gives the
ClusterObjectDeployment(COD) controller its first real behavior, building on the skeleton from #3032. The COD API types were introduced in #3018.The controller now:
ClusterObjectSet(COS) revision when the template changes (or when no active revision exists), owned by the COD.Progressingcondition.It lives in the
object-controllerbinary and is experimental-only (//go:build !standard, experimental-channel CRD).Design
olm.operatorframework.io/template-hash), not an SSA dry-run diff. A SHA-256 digest of the template is stored on each COS; the latest active revision's label is compared to the current template. This honors the CRD contract "any template change → new revision" — including changes to COS-mutable fields such asprogressionProbes, which an SSA-diff approach would silently mutate in place rather than rev.spec.group(= COD name) +spec.revision; child COS are named<cod>-<revision>.status.completedAt(set-once, immutable), so a later availability regression does not un-complete the rollout.Create(revisions are immutable;AlreadyExistsis tolerated for requeue races). No finalizer — owned COS cascade via the controller owner reference.Out of scope (handled by COS or deferred)
Archival/supersession of older revisions (done today by the COS controller), progress deadlines, revision-history pruning, orphan adoption, and object externalization to Secrets.
