Description

Removes the experimental ClusterExtension .status.activeRevisions field (and the RevisionStatus type it used), along with all related code, tests, and docs.

Why — prep-work for substituting ClusterObjectSet with ClusterObjectDeployment. Today the operator-controller discovers ClusterObjectSet revisions directly and surfaces them on the ClusterExtension via activeRevisions (derived by setActiveRevisionsFromRevisionStates). Under the planned ClusterObjectDeployment (COD) model, the COD owns its ClusterObjectSet revisions and is the source of truth for revision/rollout state (see the TODO(COD) markers in boxcutter_reconcile_steps.go and boxcutter.go). Clearing this field now removes a piece of the direct CE→COS coupling so the COD swap lands against a smaller surface. The ClusterExtension continues to report its state through the standard Installed/Progressing/Available conditions.

Changes

  • API: remove ClusterExtensionStatus.ActiveRevisions and the RevisionStatus type.
  • Controller: remove setActiveRevisionsFromRevisionStates and its call in the boxcutter apply step (availableFromReady is retained — still used by the Available condition).
  • Tests: rework the apply-step unit test (drop activeRevisions, keep apply-path + Progressing coverage); remove the e2e reports "..." as active revision(s) step + handler, its two uses in group.feature/update.feature, and the dedicated Report all active revisions on ClusterExtension scenario.
  • Docs: update docs/draft/concepts/clusterobjectsets.md; regenerate the API reference.
  • Generated: regenerate deepcopy, apply configurations (deletes revisionstatus.go), the experimental CRD, and the experimental manifests.

Compatibility

The field was experimental-only (<opcon:experimental>), so the standard ClusterExtension CRD is unchanged and the crd-diff compatibility gate is unaffected.

Testing

  • go build ./..., go vet (incl. e2e tags), api/v1 + operator-controller/controllers unit tests pass.
  • golangci-lint clean; make lint-api-diff succeeds and clears 3 pre-existing linter issues with no new ones.
  • make generate manifests crd-ref-docs produce no further diff; no remaining references to the removed field or e2e step.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes
    • Removed the experimental activeRevisions field from ClusterExtension status.
    • Removed the RevisionStatus API type and related apply-configuration interfaces.
    • Cluster extension status continues to report conditions and installation status.
  • Documentation
    • Updated API references and concepts documentation to remove active revision reporting.
  • Tests
    • Updated rollout and end-to-end coverage to validate revision behavior without activeRevisions.

Assert Installed and Progressing in the first three revision-state cases.

These cases do not initialize a Ready condition, so they cannot assert Available. Add expected Installed and Progressing conditions for all three cases and check them after the apply step. Use a separate fixture with an installed revision that has a Ready condition to cover Available.

Suggested fix
 	type want struct {
+ installed *metav1.Condition
 		progressing *metav1.Condition
 	}

Add the expected Installed and Progressing values to the first three cases, then assert the Installed condition alongside the existing Progressing assertion.

For the test cases that no longer have a want section at all, should the entire test case be removed? Or do we need to add a progressing assertion for all of the test cases?

Remove the experimental ClusterExtension status.activeRevisions field and the
RevisionStatus type it used, along with all related code: the
setActiveRevisionsFromRevisionStates status derivation and its call in the
boxcutter apply step, the e2e "reports ... as active revision(s)" step and its
uses, and the dedicated "Report all active revisions" e2e scenario. Update the
apply-step unit test, the draft concepts doc, and regenerate deepcopy, apply
configurations, the experimental CRD, manifests, and the API reference.

The field was experimental-only, so the standard ClusterExtension CRD is
unaffected.
