Description

ClusterObjectSets in the same group can currently use different names for the same revision number. Require metadata.name to be <spec.group>-<spec.revision>, using decimal revision numbers without leading zeros, so Kubernetes name uniqueness also enforces revision uniqueness within each group. Admission validates the final name, including when metadata.generateName is used.

Limit revisions to 1..9999999999. With a group of up to 52 characters, the canonical name then fits within a 63-character label value. When a group reaches the limit, operator-controller rejects a new revision before pruning history or creating Secrets and ClusterObjectSets. Unchanged content can still reconcile at the limit.

This tightens the experimental ClusterObjectSet API. Update admission and applier boundary tests, standalone fixtures, concept documentation, and generated experimental manifests.

Validation

  • make test-unit (including race detection)
  • make lint
  • make lint-api-diff BASELINE_BRANCH=origin/main (no new issues)
  • make generate manifests crd-ref-docs
  • make verify
  • 33 targeted end-to-end scenarios passed on a fresh experimental KIND cluster, covering group handoff and pruning, revisions, collision and adoption, static and dry-run preflight checks, install, update, and uninstall.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • ClusterObjectSet names must explicitly use <group>-<revision>.
    • Revisions must be unique within each group and use decimal numbers from 1 to 9,999,999,999, without leading zeros.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Revision allocation reports an error when the maximum is reached, without changing existing resources.
    • Unchanged content continues to reconcile at the maximum revision.
  • Documentation

    • Updated examples and validation guidance to reflect naming and revision requirements.
    • Clarified that generated names are unsupported.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes define canonical ClusterObjectSet names and cap revisions at 9,999,999,999. They add API and CRD validation, stop revision creation at the limit, and update documentation and test fixtures.

Changes: ClusterObjectSet Revision Contract

Layer / File(s) Summary
API contract and validation tests
api/v1/clusterobjectset_types.go, api/v1/clusterobjectset_types_test.go, api/v1/validation_test.go
The API defines the revision maximum and requires the resource name to match <group>-<revision>. Tests cover revision bounds, canonical names, immutability, and validation errors.
CRDs, documentation, and revision-name fixtures
api/v1/clusterobjectdeployment_types.go, applyconfigurations/api/v1/*, helm/olmv1/base/object-controller/crd/experimental/..., manifests/experimental*.yaml, docs/draft/concepts/clusterobjectsets.md, test/e2e/features/*, test/e2e/steps/hooks.go, cmd/object-controller/main_test.go, internal/operator-controller/controllers/boxcutter_reconcile_steps_test.go
CRDs and apply configurations describe the naming format and revision range. Documentation and test fixtures use revision-based names.
Revision exhaustion during creation
internal/operator-controller/applier/boxcutter.go, internal/operator-controller/applier/boxcutter_revision_bounds_test.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_internal_test.go, internal/object-controller/controllers/clusterobjectdeployment_controller_test.go, docs/draft/concepts/clusterobjectsets.md
Revision allocation returns an error at the maximum. Tests cover final allocation, exhaustion, integer overflow, and unchanged-content reconciliation.

WDYT about using uint32 instead? Then no need for us to keep track of maximums in the CRD validation or with this const.

Yep, that was we discussed about, than I realized we could keep int64 and put a maxint. It was a "code" proposal to not change the API, not sure anyway I prefer this.
Since API is experimental we don't really care that much changing it right now, right? Also because actually a revision number IS a uint.

After investigating this option I would prefer to keep int64 and enforce the bounds explicitly.

Kubernetes API conventions recommend to "... not use unsigned integers, due to inconsistent support across languages and libraries. Just validate that the integer is non-negative if that's the case. 🔗. Also, our current controller-gen maps uint32 to OpenAPI format: int32, not an unsigned 32-bit range:

Supporting the full uint32 range would therefore require overriding the format and keeping explicit validation anyway.

Moreover, the boxcutter library uses int64 for the revision numbers too 🔗.

Well, the change is minimal, I would leave it in this PR... but the test is a bit more heavy I have to admit.
For now I moved CE and its test in a separate commit on top.
I'm ready to drop it and move it to another PR if you prefer.

Added COD revision limit check and test (as a separate commit).
If needed we can move the COD and CE (the 2 on-top commits) as a separate PRs.

Require ClusterObjectSet names to match <group>-<revision> so Kubernetes
name uniqueness also guarantees unique revision numbers within a group.

Limit revisions to 9999999999 so canonical names fit in label values
with groups up to 52 characters. Require callers to set names explicitly
and document that generated names are unsupported.

Exercise canonical name admission, required fields, revision bounds,
and update validation with explicit fixtures and targeted errors. Adapt
standalone fixtures and examples, and regenerate experimental artifacts.

L251:
L252: `// requireStructuralSchema returns true if schemas specified must be structural
L253:     func requireStructuralSchema(oldCRDSpec *apiextensions.CustomResourceDefinitionSpec) bool {

L261: It is not possible to generically allow this weaker form of ratcheting on all types of validations - it may allow data that would have failed a validation on an older schema and break controller workflows.
L262:
L263: To enable schemas to add validations with more complicated ratcheting logic than a DeepEqual check (e.g. to allow a new `minLength` restriction to allow any value as long as it is getting closer the new minimum); we turn to CEL.

L265:
L266: CRD Validation Rules currently have two types:
L267:

L270: With only these rule types we are not able to express any logic of the form “old values must obey one schema, and new values another”. We propose to add a new change to `ValidationRule` to enable this functionality for ratcheting:

L1324: ### Finalizers
L1325:
L1326: Finalizers allow controllers to implement asynchronous pre-delete hooks. Custom objects support finalizers similar to built-in objects.
L1327:
L1328: You can add a finalizer to a custom object like this:
L1329:
L1330: `apiVersion: "stable.example.com/v1"
L1331: kind: CronTab
L1332: metadata:
L1333: finalizers:
L1334: - stable.example.com/finalizer
L1335: `
L1336: Identifiers of custom finalizers consist of a domain name, a forward slash and the name of the finalizer. Any controller can add a finalizer to any object's list of finalizers.
L1337:
L1338: The first delete request on an object with finalizers sets a value for the `metadata.deletionTimestamp` field but does not delete it. Once this value is set, entries in the `finalizers` list can only be removed. While any finalizers remain it is also impossible to force the deletion of an object.
L1339: When the `metadata.deletionTimestamp` field is set, controllers watching the object execute any finalizers they handle and remove the finalizer from the list after they are done. It is the responsibility of each controller to remove its finalizer from the list.
L1340:
L1341: The value of `metadata.deletionGracePeriodSeconds` controls the interval between polling updates.
L1342:
L1343: Once the list of finalizers is empty, meaning all finalizers have been executed, the resource is deleted by Kubernetes.
L1344: ### Validation
L1345:
L1346: Custom resources are validated via 【889†OpenAPI v3.0 schemas†github.com】, by x-kubernetes-validations when the 【890†Validation Rules feature】 is enabled, and you can add additional validation using 【891†admission webhooks】.
L1347:
L1348: Additionally, the following restrictions are applied to the schema:
L1349:
L1350: * These fields cannot be set:
L1351: * `definitions`,
L1352: * `dependencies`,
L1353: * `deprecated`,
L1354: * `discriminator`,
L1355: * `id`,
L1356: * `patternProperties`,
L1357: * `readOnly`,
L1358: * `writeOnly`,
L1359: * `xml`,
L1360: * `$ref`.
L1361: * The field `uniqueItems` cannot be set to `true`.
L1362:
L1363: * The field `additionalProperties` cannot be set to `false`.
L1364:
L1365: * The field `additionalProperties` is mutually exclusive with `properties`.
L1366: The `x-kubernetes-validations` extension can be used to validate custom resources using 【892†Common Expression Language (CEL)†github.com】 expressions when the 【890†Validation rules】 feature is enabled and the CustomResourceDefinition schema is a 【887†structural schema】.
L1367:
L1368: Refer to the 【887†structural schemas】 section for other restrictions and CustomResourceDefinition features.
L1369: The schema is defined in the CustomResourceDefinition. In the following example, the CustomResourceDefinition applies the following validations on the custom object:
L1370:
L1371: * `spec.cronSpec` must be a string and must be of the form described by the regular expression.
L1372: * `spec.replicas` must be an integer and must have a minimum value of 1 and a maximum value of 10.
L1373: Save the CustomResourceDefinition to `resourcedefinition.yaml`:
L1374:
L1375: `apiVersion: apiextensions.k8s.io/v1
L1376: kind: CustomResourceDefinition
L1377: metadata:
L1378: name: crontabs.stable.example.com
L1379: spec:
L1380: group: stable.example.com
L1381: versions:
L1382: - name: v1
L1383: served: true
L1384: storage: true
L1385: schema:
L1386: # openAPIV3Schema is the schema for validating custom objects.

L1389: properties:

L1333: string | MessageExpression declares a CEL expression that evaluates to the validation failure message that is returned when this rule fails. Since messageExpression is used as a failure message, it must evaluate to a string. If both message and messageExpression are present on a rule, then messageExpression will be used if validation fails.
L1335: If messageExpression evaluates to an empty string, a string with only spaces, or a string that contains line breaks, then the validation failure message will also be produced as if the messageExpression field were unset, and the fact that messageExpression produced an empty string/string with only spaces/string with line breaks will be logged. messageExpression has access to all the same variables as the rule; the only difference is the return type. Example: "x must be less than max ("+string(self.max)+")"
L1337: boolean | optionalOldSelf is used to opt a transition rule into evaluation even when the object is first created, or if the old object is missing the value. When enabled `oldSelf` will be a CEL optional whose value will be `None` if there is no old value, or when the object is initially created. You may check for presence of oldSelf using `oldSelf.hasValue()` and unwrap it after checking using `oldSelf.value()`.
L1340: string | reason provides a machine-readable validation failure reason that is returned to the caller when a request fails this validation rule. The HTTP status code returned to the caller will match the reason of the reason of the first failed validation rule. The currently supported reasons are: "FieldValueInvalid", "FieldValueForbidden", "FieldValueRequired", "FieldValueDuplicate". If not set, default to use "FieldValueInvalid".
L1341: All future added reasons must be accepted by clients when reading this value and unknown reasons should be treated as FieldValueInvalid.
L1342: Possible enum values:
L1343: - `"FieldValueDuplicate"` is used to report collisions of values that must be unique (e.g. unique IDs).
L1344: - `"FieldValueForbidden"` is used to report valid (as per formatting rules) values which would be accepted under some conditions, but which are not permitted by the current conditions (such as security policy).
L1345: - `"FieldValueInvalid"` is used to report malformed values (e.g. failed regex match, too long, out of bounds).
L1346: - `"FieldValueRequired"` is used to report required values that are not provided (e.g. empty strings, null values, or empty arrays).
L1347: `rule` *
L1348: string | Rule represents the expression which will be evaluated by CEL. ref: https://github.com/google/cel-spec The Rule is scoped to the location of the x-kubernetes-validations extension in the schema. The `self` variable in the CEL expression is bound to the scoped value.
L1349: Example: - Rule scoped to the root of a resource with a status subresource: {"rule": "self.status.actual \<= self.spec.maxDesired"} If the Rule is scoped to an object with properties, the accessible properties of the object are field selectable via `self.field` and field presence can be checked via `has(self.field)`. Null valued fields are treated as absent fields in CEL expressions. If the Rule is scoped to an object with additionalProperties (i.e.
L1350: a map) the value of the map are accessible via `self[mapKey]`, map containment can be checked via `mapKey in self` and all entries of the map are accessible via CEL macros and functions such as `self.all(...)`. If the Rule is scoped to an array, the elements of the array are accessible via `self[i]` and also by macros and functions. If the Rule is scoped to a scalar, `self` is bound to the scalar value.

<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: last month; To validate only against the schema for the `.status` subpath, `oneOf` and `anyOf` constructs are not allowed within the root of the schema, but only under a properties sub-schema (with this restriction, we can project a schema to a sub-path). ... Both the status and the spec (and everything else if there is anything) of the object share the same key in the storage layer, i.e. the value at `.metadata.resourceVersion` is increased for any kind of change. ... In Kubernetes there are a number of other subresources like `/log`, `/exec`, `/bind`.
## Semantics

### Validation Behavior

#### Status

The status endpoint of a CustomResource receives a full CR object. Changes outside of the `.status` subpath are ignored. For validation, the JSON Schema present in the CRD is validated only against the `.status` subpath.

To validate only against the schema for the `.status` subpath, `oneOf` and `anyOf` constructs are not allowed within the root of the schema, but only under a properties sub-schema (with this restriction, we can project a schema to a sub-path). The following is forbidden in the CRD spec:

    validation:
        openAPIV3Schema:
            oneOf:
                ...

Note: The restriction for `oneOf` and `anyOf` allows us to write a projection function `ProjectJSONSchema(schema *JSONSchemaProps, path []string) (*JSONSchemaProps, error)` that can be used to apply a given schema for the whole object to only the sub-path `.status` or `.spec`.

#### Scale

Moreover, if the scale subresource is enabled:

On update, we copy the values from the `Scale` object into the specified paths in the CustomResource, if the path is set (`StatusReplicasPath` and `LabelSelectorPath` are optional). If `StatusReplicasPath` or `LabelSelectorPath` is not set, we validate that the value in `Scale` is also not specified and return an error otherwise.

On `get` and on `update` (after copying the values into the CustomResource as described above), we verify that:

  * The value at the specified JSON Path `SpecReplicasPath` (e.g. `.spec.replicas`) is a non-negative integer value and is not empty.

  * The value at the optional JSON Path `StatusReplicasPath` (e.g. `.status.replicas`) is an integer value if it exists (i.e. this can be empty).

  * The value at the optional JSON Path `LabelSelectorPath` (e.g. `.spec.labelSelector`) is a valid label selector if it exists (i.e. this can be empty).

Note: The values at the JSON Paths specified by `SpecReplicasPath`, `LabelSelectorPath` and `StatusReplicasPath` are also validated with the same rules when the whole object or, in case the `/status` subresource is enabled, the `.status` sub-object is updated.

### Status Behavior

If the `/status` subresource is enabled, the following behaviors change:

  * The main resource endpoint will ignore all changes in the status subpath. (note: it will not reject requests which try to change the status, following the existing semantics of other resources).

  * The `.metadata.generation` field is updated if and only if the value at the `.spec` subpath changes. Additionally, if the spec does not change, `.metadata.generation` is not updated.

  * The `/status` subresource receives a full resource object, but only considers the value at the `.status` subpath for the update. The value at the `.metadata` subpath is not considered for update as decided in kubernetes/kubernetes#45539.

Both the status and the spec (and everything else if there is anything) of the object share the same key in the storage layer, i.e. the value at `.metadata.resourceVersion` is increased for any kind of change. There is no split of status and spec in the storage layer.

The `/status` endpoint supports both `get` and `update` verbs.

### Scale Behavior

The number of CustomResources can be easily scaled up or down depending on the replicas field present in the `.spec` subpath.

L586: ## Serving multiple versions of a CRD
L587:
L588: See 【84†Custom resource definition versioning】 for more information about serving multiple versions of your CustomResourceDefinition and migrating your objects from one version to another.
L589:
L590: ## Advanced topics
L591: ### Finalizers
L592:
L593: Finalizers allow controllers to implement asynchronous pre-delete hooks. Custom objects support finalizers similar to built-in objects.
L594:
L595: You can add a finalizer to a custom object like this:
L596:
L597: apiVersion: "stable.example.com/v1"
L598: kind: CronTab
L599: metadata:
L602: Identifiers of custom finalizers consist of a domain name, a forward slash and the name of the finalizer. Any controller can add a finalizer to any object's list of finalizers.
L603:
L604: The first delete request on an object with finalizers sets a value for the `metadata.deletionTimestamp` field but does not delete it. Once this value is set, entries in the `finalizers` list can only be removed. While any finalizers remain it is also impossible to force the deletion of an object.
L605: When the `metadata.deletionTimestamp` field is set, controllers watching the object execute any finalizers they handle and remove the finalizer from the list after they are done. It is the responsibility of each controller to remove its finalizer from the list.
L606:
L607: The value of `metadata.deletionGracePeriodSeconds` controls the interval between polling updates.
L608:
L609: Once the list of finalizers is empty, meaning all finalizers have been executed, the resource is deleted by Kubernetes.
L610: ### Validation
L611:
L612: Custom resources are validated via 【85†OpenAPI v3.0 schemas】, by x-kubernetes-validations when the 【86†Validation Rules feature】 is enabled, and you can add additional validation using 【87†admission webhooks】.
L613:
L614: Additionally, the following restrictions are applied to the schema:
L615:
L616: * These fields cannot be set:
L617: * `definitions`,
L618: * `dependencies`,
L619: * `deprecated`,
L620: * `discriminator`,
L621: * `id`,
L622: * `patternProperties`,
L623: * `readOnly`,
L624: * `writeOnly`,
L625: * `xml`,
L626: * `$ref`.
L627: * The field `uniqueItems` cannot be set to `true`.
L628:
L629: * The field `additionalProperties` cannot be set to `false`.
L630:
L631: * The field `additionalProperties` is mutually exclusive with `properties`.
L632: The `x-kubernetes-validations` extension can be used to validate custom resources using 【88†Common Expression Language (CEL)】 expressions when the 【86†Validation rules】 feature is enabled and the CustomResourceDefinition schema is a 【82†structural schema】.
L633:
L634: Refer to the 【82†structural schemas】 section for other restrictions and CustomResourceDefinition features.
L635: The schema is defined in the CustomResourceDefinition. In the following example, the CustomResourceDefinition applies the following validations on the custom object:
L636:
L637: * `spec.cronSpec` must be a string and must be of the form described by the regular expression.
L638: * `spec.replicas` must be an integer and must have a minimum value of 1 and a maximum value of 10.
L639: Save the CustomResourceDefinition to `resourcedefinition.yaml`:
L640:
L641: apiVersion: apiextensions.k8s.io/v1
L642: kind: CustomResourceDefinition
L643: metadata:
L644: name: crontabs.stable.example.com
L645: spec:
L646: group: stable.example.com
L647: versions:
L648: - name: v1
L649: served: true
L650: storage: true
L651: schema:
L652: # openAPIV3Schema is the schema for validating custom objects.
L653: openAPIV3Schema:

L737: To write custom ratcheting logic for CEL expressions, check out 【90†optionalOldSelf】.
L738:
L739: * `x-kubernetes-list-type` Errors arising from changing the list type of a subschema will not be ratcheted. For example adding `set` onto a list with duplicates will always result in an error.
L740:
L741: * `x-kubernetes-list-map-keys` Errors arising from changing the map keys of a list schema will not be ratcheted.
L742:
L743: * `required` Errors arising from changing the list of required fields will not be ratcheted.
L744: * `properties` Adding/removing/modifying the names of properties is not ratcheted, but changes to validations in each properties' schemas and subschemas may be ratcheted if the name of the property stays the same.
L745:
L746: * `additionalProperties` To remove a previously specified `additionalProperties` validation will not be ratcheted.
L747: * `metadata` Errors that come from Kubernetes' built-in validation of an object's `metadata` are not ratcheted (such as object name, or characters in a label value). If you specify your own additional rules for the metadata of a custom resource, that additional validation will be ratcheted.

L750: {{< feature-state state="stable" for_k8s_version="v1.29" >}}
L751:
L752: Validation rules use the 【88†Common Expression Language (CEL)】 to validate custom resource values. Validation rules are included in CustomResourceDefinition schemas using the `x-kubernetes-validations` extension.
L753:
L754: The Rule is scoped to the location of the `x-kubernetes-validations` extension in the schema. And `self` variable in the CEL expression is bound to the scoped value.
L755: All validation rules are scoped to the current object: no cross-object or stateful validation rules are supported.
L756: For example:

L758: # ...

L760: type: object
L761: properties:

L763: type: object
L764: x-kubernetes-validations:
L765:               - rule: "self.minReplicas <= self.replicas"

L1360: * `$ref`.
L1361: * The field `uniqueItems` cannot be set to `true`.
L1362:

L1439: spec.replicas in body should be less than or equal to 10
L1440: `
L1441: If the fields contain valid values, the object creation request is accepted.

L1463:
L1464: More information about this feature
L1465:
L1466: This is a stable feature in Kubernetes, and has been since version 1.33. It was first available in the v1.28 release.
L1467:
L1468: If you are using a version of Kubernetes older than v1.30, you need to explicitly enable the `CRDValidationRatcheting` 【795†feature gate】 to use this behavior, which then applies to all CustomResourceDefinitions in your cluster.
L1469: Provided you enabled the feature gate, Kubernetes implements validation ratcheting for CustomResourceDefinitions. The API server is willing to accept updates to resources that are not valid after the update, provided that each part of the resource that failed to validate was not changed by the update operation. In other words, any invalid part of the resource that remains invalid must have already been wrong. You cannot use this mechanism to update a valid resource so that it becomes invalid.

L270: With only these rule types we are not able to express any logic of the form “old values must obey one schema, and new values another”. We propose to add a new change to `ValidationRule` to enable this functionality for ratcheting:
L271:
L272: `// ValidationRule describes a validation rule written in the CEL expression language.
L273:     type ValidationRule struct {
L274: // ...
L275: Rule string `json:"rule" protobuf:"bytes,1,opt,name=rule"`
L276: Message string `json:"message,omitempty" protobuf:"bytes,2,opt,name=message"`
L277: MessageExpression string `json:"messageExpression,omitempty" protobuf:"bytes,3,opt,name=messageExpression"`
L278: Reason *FieldValueErrorReason `json:"reason,omitempty" protobuf:"bytes,4,opt,name=reason"`
L279: FieldPath string `json:"fieldPath,omitempty" protobuf:"bytes,5,opt,name=fieldPath"`
L280: // ...
L281:
L282: // New
L283: // Normally, if `rule` references `oldSelf` then it is skipped on create, and
L284: // when an old value could not be found. If this field is true then the rule is
L285: // always evaluated. `oldSelf = nil` on create or when an old value could not
L286: // be correlated.
L287: //
L288: // Ensure your rule employs a nil check on `oldSelf` before using it in an
L289: // expression.
L290: AppliesOnCreate bool `json:"requiresOldValue"`
L291:     }
L292: `
L293: With this feature in place, users are able to express complicating ratcheting logic in CEL, to express racheting conditions based on values they know their controllers support:
L294:
L295: `x-kubernetes-validations:
L296:     - rule: len(self) >= 5 || (oldSelf != nil && len(oldSelf) < len(self))
L297: appliesOnCreate: true
L298: message: New objects need names longer or equal to 5.
L299: `
L300: The above rule will allow strings that do not satisfy the new minimum length requirement if they are longer than the old value; but all new objects must be created with the new constraint.
L301: ### User Stories (Optional)
L302: #### CRD Author Tightens a Field
L303:
L304: Consider the current situation that plays when when a CRD author attempts to shift left validation logic done by their controller by adding a validation to their CRD:
L305: 1. CRD author gets complaints from users that they don’t know their CRs have invalid values until the CR is processed by the controller and updates the status.
L306: 2. CRD author notices OpenAPI schemas support adding value validations, and happily annotates their schema.
L307: 3. Since only validation was changed: no fields were removed or had their types changed, the author considers the change too minor to require a new CRD version.
L308: 4. During testing users apply the updated CRD. Some users have pre-existing resources that passed validation before, and now fail.
L309: 5. Controllers break since they can’t update the Status of the custom resource: it fails validation.
L310: 6. User’s entire workflow is now broken until they repair all broken custom resources.
L311: 7. User downgrades their CRD and complains to the CRD author

L1338: Check the CEL documentation for Optional types for more information: https://pkg.go.dev/github.com/google/cel-go/cel#OptionalTypes May not be set unless `oldSelf` is used in `rule`.
L1339: `reason`
L1350: a map) the value of the map are accessible via `self[mapKey]`, map containment can be checked via `mapKey in self` and all entries of the map are accessible via CEL macros and functions such as `self.all(...)…[truncated]</excerpt>

If a rule is estimated to be prohibitively expensive to execute, the API server rejects the create or update operation, and returns an error message.
Users can update to the new schema safely without bumping the version of the object or breaking workflows.

While most validations placed in the OpenAPIV3 schema of a CRD support ratcheting, there are a few exceptions. The following OpenAPIV3 schema validations are not supported by ratcheting under the implementation in Kubernetes 1.37 and if violated will continue to throw an error as normally:

  * Quantors

    * `allOf`
    * `oneOf`
    * `anyOf`
    * `not`
    * any validations in a descendent of one of these fields
  * `x-kubernetes-validations` For Kubernetes 1.28, CRD validation rules are ignored by ratcheting. Starting with Alpha 2 in Kubernetes 1.29, `x-kubernetes-validations` are ratcheted only if they do not refer to `oldSelf`.

Transition Rules are never ratcheted: only errors raised by rules that do not use `oldSelf` will be automatically ratcheted if their values are unchanged.

To write custom ratcheting logic for CEL expressions, check out optionalOldSelf.

Allow legacy ClusterObjectSets to update during migration.

This root-level CEL rule has no oldSelf or transition guard. Kubernetes ratcheting permits an invalid value only when the failed part remains unchanged. A /status update changes the root object through status, and finalizer removal changes it through metadata, so the failed root-level rule is not ratcheted.

The ClusterObjectSet controller can therefore fail to record progress or remove its teardown finalizer for a pre-existing noncanonical object. The current ClusterObjectDeployment and boxcutter creation paths use canonical names, but the previous schema did not enforce this name, so objects created by earlier or other clients can still be affected.

Add an update-safe migration rule or document a migration plan before enforcing this rule in both generated manifests.

Review comment at @manifests/experimental.yaml around lines 2702 - 2704:
Make the ClusterObjectSet name validation update-safe in both generated
manifests: allow an existing name to remain unchanged on updates while requiring
newly created or changed names to match the canonical group-revision format. Use
a transition-aware rule with oldSelf so status updates and finalizer removal
remain possible for legacy objects.
