with omitzero, add the immutability CEL validation allowing only an initially
unset value, and update its documentation to reflect zero-value semantics.
Adjust preserveCompletionTimes to use IsZero checks, then regenerate deepcopy
code, apply configurations, and CRDs.
Review comments at @internal/object-controller/status/status.go:
- Around line 215-216: Reset the reused ObservedPhase Message before branch
selection in mapSpecPhases, after ensuring the entry exists, so every spec-phase
transition clears stale text while branches that set a message can still
overwrite it. Also clear Message for each entry in allPhasesWithStatus alongside
its status and object-count updates.
- Around line 233-242: Update preserveCompletionTimes so it assigns CompletedAt
only when a phase has status ocv1.PhaseStatusAvailable and no existing
completion time; leave all other phase statuses nil and preserve existing
timestamps. Update the “sets completedAt where nil” test to use an Available
phase, and add coverage confirming non-Available phases remain unset.

Currently, in Ready, Superseded gets set once any object has transitioned. We should also make a decision here. The issue at the revision/object set level is that we may not ever have all objects transitioned (some may not be present in the next revision)...
There was a problem hiding this comment.
So you're saying that in a given phase we may have both objects that have been superseded by the subsequent revision and some that have been archived instead? If we aren't avoiding the use of Progressed terminology we could set that as a more broad condition when both Archived and Superseded apply to the same phase.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good point @dtfranz. The assumption here is that there is no use to differentiate between "Superseded" and "Archived", as once the objects are either taken over or deleted it changes nothing for the Phase: seems clear that the assumption holds to me, making it explicit to double check.
For the term, I would consider keeping "Superseded" but with the meaning of Daniel's "Progressed".
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I mean, for example, rev-1.phase-1 has objects {a, b, c, d} and rev-2.phase-1 has objects {a, b, c}
rev-1.phase-1 will never has a HasTransitioned() == true because object d isn't present in rev-2. So, I'm wondering whether a phase is superseded once any of its objects is now owned by a subsequent revision.

completedAttype:CompletedAtis still*metav1.Timewithomitempty. The repository convention requires a value type withomitzero. No this is left here intentionally. The status pkg refers to the pkg where most of this PR's changes lie. The idea is that we have all code associated with the COS status sit inside that package, which includes setting the conditions after checking validations as we currently do in the controller, here.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
Scenario: a new revision is created, and a phase in the old revision contains one object adopted by the new revision (ActionProgressed) and another that remains with the old revision and is idle. Boxcutter can return IsComplete() == true and HasProgressed() == false, causing this code to report the old revision’s phase as Ready.
Revision-level completion uses hasSupersededObject(rres) to exclude completion when any object has progressed. Should phase-level completion follow the same rule, or is this difference accounted for?
