Two P2 correctness findings, both reproduced with focused controller tests. The existing controller and API test suites pass with race detection; both focused tests fail with the PR controller and pass when only the deployment controller is replaced with its common-ancestor version.

[P2] Wait for archive teardown before pruning
With revisionHistoryLimit: 0, this selects revisions whose spec.lifecycleState is Archived even while their status is still Archiving and the olm.operatorframework.io/teardown finalizer is present. Once GC sets the deletion timestamp, the ClusterObjectSet controller takes its deletion path, which removes the finalizer without calling RevisionEngine.Teardown.
This bypasses ordered reverse-phase cleanup. For example, a controller can be deleted before the custom resources it finalizes have finished terminating. Please wait for archival teardown to complete before pruning the revision.
In the focused reproduction, reconciling the deployment and then the archived ClusterObjectSet removes the revision without any Teardown call, even though teardown is configured to remain incomplete. With the original deployment controller, teardown runs and the revision remains.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed. Garbage collection now only prunes archived revisions whose teardown has completed, detected via the revision's Ready condition (Ready=False/Archived). The ClusterObjectSet controller sets that reason only after RevisionEngine.Teardown completes; while tearing down it reports Ready=False/Archiving, and since archive() re-runs Teardown every reconcile the condition flips back to Archiving if an object later gets stuck terminating. A revision still tearing down is therefore skipped and pruned on a later reconcile, which the controller's watch on owned ClusterObjectSets triggers once teardown completes. Added a unit case ("an archived revision still tearing down is not pruned").

[P2] Continue rollout reconciliation after a cleanup error
If deletion of an excess archived revision is repeatedly denied, for example by an admission policy, this early return skips setAvailable, new revision creation, and Progressing updates on every reconcile. A failure to clean up old history can therefore indefinitely block deployment of an updated template and leave status stale, even with a healthy active revision.
Please preserve the cleanup error, continue rollout and status reconciliation, and return the cleanup error afterward, joining it with any subsequent failure.
In the focused reproduction, three reconciliations with a failed archived-revision deletion never create the new revision or update Available/Progressing. The same rollout proceeds with the original deployment controller.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed. Garbage collection is now best-effort: the rollout no longer early-returns on a cleanup error. reconcile preserves the GC error and returns it joined with the rollout outcome, and the rollout/status logic moved into a reconcileRollout helper so setAvailable, new-revision creation, and Progressing updates all run even when a prune is persistently denied. The cleanup error is still surfaced so the reconcile is retried with backoff, but it can no longer block deployment of an updated template. Added Test_ClusterObjectDeploymentReconciler_RolloutProceedsDespiteGarbageCollectError asserting the new revision is created and Available/Progressing are reconciled while the archived-revision delete fails.

Add an optional `spec.revisionHistoryLimit` to ClusterObjectDeployment that bounds how many archived (superseded) ClusterObjectSet revisions are retained. The ClusterObjectDeployment controller deletes the oldest archived revisions in excess of the limit on each reconcile; active revisions are never deleted and do not count against the limit. The field is a pointer so that the three states remain distinguishable: unset defaults to 5, an explicit 0 retains no archived revisions, and any value up to the maximum of 50 is honored. This mirrors the semantics of Kubernetes Deployment.spec.revisionHistoryLimit. Garbage collection only prunes archived revisions whose teardown has completed (Ready=False/Archived). Deleting a revision mid-teardown would send it down the ClusterObjectSet controller's deletion path, which removes the teardown finalizer without running RevisionEngine.Teardown and so bypasses ordered reverse-phase cleanup. Garbage collection is also best-effort: a persistently failing prune (for example, a delete denied by an admission policy) no longer blocks rollout or status reconciliation. The cleanup error is preserved and returned joined with the rollout outcome so it is still surfaced and retried. Covered by controller unit tests, API validation (bounds + default) tests, and a cod_revision_history e2e scenario (with a new "ClusterObjectSet is eventually deleted" step). Mark archived revisions as Archiving when teardown retries fail.
After Ready=False/Archived is written, markAsArchived returns before the teardown finalizer is removed. A later RevisionEngine.Teardown error leaves the stale Archived condition. The deployment GC predicate then selects the revision and deletes it. Its delete handler removes the finalizer without calling Teardown, so incomplete cleanup can be skipped.
