fix(API): patch race conditions, apiIndex dual-producer conflict - #244
Conversation
WalkthroughThe CLI resolves configured content globs and converts content before Astro loads collections. API-index generation now shares concurrent work and propagates write failures. The API-index endpoint uses ChangesContent preparation and API index

* src/content.config, remove unawaited convertToMDX call from defineContent to eliminate collection loader race * cli/cli, await markdown conversion before Astro startup, fail fast on unresolved content globs, remove post-build apiIndex overwrite * cli/createCollectionContent, add explicit TS return type annotation to findPackage, export resolveContentEntryGlob with local directory existence check and package resolution * src/pages/apiIndex.json, dynamically generate apiIndex during Astro prerender as sole authoritative producer * src/utils/apiIndex/generate, coalesce parallel static path writes, fail fast and re-throw on disk write errors * package.json, redirect start:astro and build:astro scripts to CLI pipeline to prevent bypassed markdown conversion * tests, add resolveContentEntryGlob local and package path resolution unit tests, verify concurrent apiIndex write coalescing Assisted-by: Cursor-auto, GPT-5.6, Gemini-3.7-Flash

Description
This PR resolves several interrelated build-lifecycle race conditions, catalog collisions, and unbuilt content issues in
@patternfly/patternfly-doc-core. Specifically, it addresses:awaitinside Astro's collection loader (src/content.config.ts), causing collection discovery to race against active file conversion on disk.apiIndex.jsonDual-Producer Overwrite: Astro prerenderssrc/pages/apiIndex.json.tsintodist/docs/apiIndex.json. However,cli/cli.tsexecuted a post-buildcopyFilestep that copieddist/apiIndex.json(the unrendered template) overdist/docs/apiIndex.json, destroying the prerendered catalog output.text.ts,examples/[example].ts) invokedwriteApiIndex()concurrently without synchronization, causing intermittent disk write collisions while swallowing errors.node_modulespackages, added fail-fast validation for missing documentation sources, and fixed TypeScript compiler errorTS7023infindPackage.start:astroandbuild:astroscripts to route through the CLI pipeline, routing these script aliases through the MDX transformation lifecycle.Cross-Facet Impact & Side-Effects Analysis
In addition to resolving the core API catalog drops, these changes affect and stabilize several key areas across the repository:
convertToMDX()ran unawaited insidesrc/content.config.ts, static HTML page generation ([...page].astro,[tab].astro) suffered from intermittent missing markdown sections or empty tab content when Astro read files before they finished compiling.resolveContentEntryGlobnow checks for local folder existence (existsSync) and resolves npm packages fromnode_modules. If a configured base directory or package cannot be resolved, the CLI immediately throws a clear, actionable error (Unable to resolve documentation content...) rather than silently generating incomplete builds.: string | nulltofindPackageincli/createCollectionContent.ts, preventing compiler errorTS7023in strict TypeScript environments.start:astroandbuild:astrohelps developers or CI runners minimally avoid accidentally bypassing the CLI transformation lifecycle and produce empty builds.generateProps(),tsDocGen, anddist/props.json) runs cleanly after MDX transformation and before Astro prerendering. Embedded component props tables (<PropsTable />,<PropsTables />) continue to function without changes to component schemas.extractReactTokens.ts,<CSSTable />) and icon catalogs (iconsIndex.json.ts) operate independently and are completely untouched. All token and icon unit tests continue to pass.Detailed Changes & Rationale
1.
src/content.config.tsconvertToMDX(${base}/${pattern})call and its unused import fromdefineContent().defineContent()runs during collection discovery. Triggering asynchronous disk writes without awaiting them created non-deterministic builds where Astro loaded partially converted or missing files. Content preparation now lives exclusively in the CLI before Astro initializes.2.
cli/cli.tscopyFile(apiIndexPath, docsApiIndexPath)step frombuildProject()./docs/apiIndex.jsonis now the sole authoritative artifact.buildProject()andstart, awaitstransformMDContentToMDX(verbose)before Astro starts.3.
cli/createCollectionContent.tsresolveContentEntryGlob(contentEntry, configDir, repoRootDir, verbose?)to resolve and validate localbasepaths (withexistsSync) andnode_modulespackage paths.: string | nullreturn type annotation to recursivefindPackage(resolvesTS7023).4.
src/pages/apiIndex.json.tsgetApiIndex()with dynamicgenerateApiIndex(), ensuring Astro generates the complete index from live collection data during prerendering (matchingcomponent-index.json.ts).5.
src/utils/apiIndex/generate.tsindexWriteInFlight: Promise<ApiIndex> | null) togenerateAndWriteApiIndex(), ensuring concurrent route calls share a single file write.writeApiIndex()to logconsole.errorand re-throw write errors (throw error).6.
package.json"start:astro"to"npm run start:cli"and"build:astro"to"npm run build && astro check".astro devorastro check && astro builddirectly bypasses content transformation and results in missing documentation pages. Aligning these script aliases ensures they execute through the required CLI lifecycle.7. Unit Tests
cli/__tests__/createCollectionContent.test.ts: Added unit tests forresolveContentEntryGlobtesting local folder anchoring, missing directorynullfallback, andnode_modulespackage resolution.src/utils/__tests__/componentIndex.test.ts: Added concurrency unit test proving parallel calls togenerateAndWriteApiIndex()coalesce into a single file-system write. How to Confirm & Verify This Work
Follow these steps to test the build pipeline, run the local API server, and verify the generated endpoints:
Step 1: Run the Unit Test Suites
Verify all unit tests pass, including the new glob resolution and concurrency coalescing tests:
npm testExpected: 38/38 test suites pass (400 tests).
Step 2: Test the Production Build
Run the standard build workflow (compiles CLI and runs Astro build):
What to check:
dist/docs/apiIndex.jsonIntegrity: Inspect the generated static API index to confirm it contains active component examples and was not overwritten by an empty template:index.examplescontains component keys (such asv6::components::button::react) populated with example names and titles rather than empty arrays.Step 3: Run the Local Dev / API Server (Astro - Port 4321)
Start the local server using the standard CLI runner:
npm run dev # Or: npm run start:cliWhat to check (via browser or curl):
curl -s http://localhost:4321/apiIndex.json | head -n 30curl -s http://localhost:4321/api/component-index.json | head -n 30ButtonPrimary,ButtonSecondary, etc.) with full MDX/code payloads.Step 4: Test Static Output Preview (Cloudflare Wrangler - Port 8788)
Preview the built artifacts in
dist/docs/using the Cloudflare Pages emulator:npm run preview # Runs 'wrangler pages dev', binding by default to port 8788What to check:
curl -s http://localhost:8788/apiIndex.json | head -n 30curl -s http://localhost:8788/api/component-index.json | head -n 30Summary by CodeRabbit
