Fix #232

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • AppImage integration now more reliably selects a valid desktop entry, improving app visibility and launch integration when packages contain multiple or indirect desktop-entry files.

- rank root and direct application entries above nested helpers
- prefer visible entries whose stem matches the package name
- resolve shipped symlinks and skip oversized or binary candidates

Walkthrough

AppImage integration now filters and ranks desktop-entry candidates before selecting an entry for the package-named destination.

Changes: AppImage desktop-entry selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter and rank desktop-entry candidates
crates/soar-package/src/formats/appimage.rs
The selector follows symlinks up to 40 hops and skips candidates that fail path, size, readability, or desktop-entry content checks. It ranks the remaining candidates by location, visibility, package-name match, and lowercase path. Tests cover ranking and candidate rejection.
Use the selected desktop entry
crates/soar-package/src/formats/appimage.rs
Integration uses the selector when no desktop file already exists. It does not set a destination when a desktop file exists or no candidate qualifies.

Explanation

Issue #232 requires selecting the AppImage application entry instead of a bundled helper. find_desktop_entry filters desktop candidates, resolves symlinks, rejects invalid or oversized files, and ranks the AppImage root and direct application entries above nested helper paths. It also prefers visible entries and package-name stem matches. The added tests cover location ranking, stem matching, visibility parsing, and desktop-entry validation.

Explanation

The changes stay within Issue #232. The selector, candidate validation, symlink handling, ranking logic, and focused tests all support choosing the canonical desktop entry. No unrelated product behavior or files are changed.

Add coverage for the selector and symlink resolution.

The current tests verify ranking helpers but never call find_desktop_entry. They do not assert that a visible canonical entry wins over a hidden nested helper, so the #232 regression remains unguarded. They also do not cover symlink chains, cycles, or dangling targets.

AppImageEntry fixtures are sufficient for direct resolve_symlink tests. They are not sufficient by themselves for find_desktop_entry, which also requires an AppImage to provide entries and file contents. Test that function with an appropriate AppImage fixture, or extract its ranking step into a pure helper that accepts entries and contents.

Resolve SquashFS symlink targets with their original path semantics.

resolve_symlink performs an exact path comparison. squishy prefixes each target with /, so ./app.desktop becomes /./app.desktop and does not match /app.desktop. A relative target from a nested symlink is also checked from / instead of from the symlink's parent. find_desktop_entry then drops the valid candidate when resolution returns None.

Recover whether the prefixed target was originally relative or absolute, normalize . and .., and resolve relative targets against the current symlink's parent before the exact lookup. Do not combine this correction with ranking or performance changes.

Rank the original desktop-entry path.

find_desktop_entry resolves each entry before sorting. A root-level .desktop symlink that targets a nested file is therefore ranked as nested. A helper with a better-ranked path can win, so the canonical root entry is not preferred.

Keep the original entry for ranking and use the resolved entry for validation, reading, and returning it. This is separate from fixing relative symlink target lookup.

Thanks for the PR. squishy already had a fix for this, but that version was never published to crates.io and soar never updated to it, so the fix didn't reach soar. Both are fixed now: squishy 0.5.3 is on crates.io and soar's main uses it.

Your PR also adds two ranking improvements that squishy doesn't have yet: nested applications/ entries (such as kde4/) rank below direct ones, and NoDisplay=true entries are de-preferred. That logic belongs in squishy, so if you'd like, please open a PR against desktop_rank in squishy.
