soar dl fetched every file over a single HTTP connection, so throughput was bounded by the server or CDN's per-connection cap rather than the path capacity. On a 10 Gbps link it saturated around 25 MB/s while multi-connection downloaders reached far higher speeds.
Solution
When a server supports byte ranges and the file is at least 8 MiB, soar dl now splits it into chunks and fetches them in parallel, each on its own connection, written at its offset into a pre-allocated output file.
Chunk queue instead of one segment per connection. A download is cut into connections x 4 chunks (minimum 4 MiB per chunk, at most 128 chunks) and workers pull from a shared queue. A connection that stalls or crawls only ever holds its current chunk while the rest of the queue drains, which also removes the "starts slow and jumps when a batch completes" ramp of static segment splits.
Connection count. Defaults to 8, overridable per download with --connections or globally via download_concurrency in the config.
Per-chunk resume. Progress is checkpointed into xattrs every 1 MiB across all workers. A resumed run finishes half-written chunks first, skips completed chunks entirely, and validates that the stored state tiles the resource exactly and still matches the server-reported size before trusting it.
Fallbacks, in order. HEAD refused -> 1-byte range probe; no range support or xattr-less filesystem -> single stream; a server that announces ranges but ignores them mid-flight (200 to a ranged GET, wrong Content-Range start or total) -> restart as a single stream.
Adversarial hardening. A server sending more bytes than its Content-Range promises can no longer leak into neighboring chunks (reads are clamped to the span); a chunk that completes cleanly is no longer misclassified as a premature close, so the 3-attempt retry budget applies to real interruptions; oversized or malformed Content-Range headers fall back instead of splicing.

New Features
Downloads can now use multiple connections to fetch file segments in parallel when the server supports range requests. Set the connection count with --connections or the download_concurrency configuration option; the default is 8.
Downloads can resume segmented transfers. If a server does not support range requests, the download falls back to a single stream.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds a configurable per-download connection count. For eligible files, the downloader probes server range support and can transfer byte segments in parallel with resumable progress. Other downloads use a single response stream.
The configuration and CLI accept a per-download connection count, defaulting to 8. The resolved value is passed to direct-link, package, forge-release, and side-file downloads. Configuration resolution rejects a value of 0.
Define range and resume contracts crates/soar-dl/src/http.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/types.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/error.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/utils.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/oci.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/xattr.rs
HTTP helpers read remote size, range support, and ETag metadata and issue range requests. Resume metadata gains optional per-segment progress, and unsupported ranges have a non-transient error variant. Existing resume fixtures and compatibility tests account for the new field.
Plan and run segmented transfers crates/soar-dl/src/segmented.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/test_server.rs, crates/soar-dl/src/lib.rs
The segmented downloader plans ranges, validates resumed segments, and runs workers with retries, progress checkpoints, and bounded writes. The test server can simulate range behavior and transfer failures. Tests cover planning, resume validation, parallel requests, fallback cases, and response anomalies.
Select segmented or single-stream downloads crates/soar-dl/src/download.rs
The downloader uses HEAD metadata or a range probe to select segmented transfers when the server supports ranges and the resource meets the size threshold. Unsupported ranges or resume-state write failures use the single-stream path. Single-stream reads use a 256 KiB buffer.

A ranged GET returning 416 is propagated as a non-transient HTTP error, unlike the single-stream resume path, which restarts after 416.
Subsequent retries can repeatedly fail on the same saved state instead of fetching the changed file afresh.
This can occur when: Saved segmented offsets lie beyond a resource that shrank; the early resume branch has no HEAD size available to reject the state first.

Detect overlapping requests in the connection-count test.
the_planned_number_of_connections_is_used counts GET requests, checks that each one carries a range, and compares the file bytes. A client that fetches the four chunks one after another passes all of these checks. The test server cannot reveal overlap either. Its accept loop handles each connection to completion before it accepts the next one.
Suggested change:
Handle each accepted connection on its own thread. Share routes, options, and recorded through Arc. Make ServeOptions shareable, for example by deriving Clone or wrapping it in Arc.
Track the number of requests in flight at once, and record the peak value.
For a deterministic check, have the server hold each response until a second request arrives, or until a timeout expires. Assert that the peak is greater than 1. A serial client then fails the test.

Pass the connection count to OCI digest downloads.
soar dl --connections 1 --ghcr does not limit a digest-addressed blob to one connection. handle_oci_download never passes ctx.connections to OciDownload. download_blob then builds a Download with its default of 8 connections, so a range-capable blob of at least 8 MiB can use segmented requests. Add a connections field to OciDownload, set it from the context, and forward it in download_blob.

Stop resuming segmented state when connections is 1.
With connections set to 1, a retry that finds saved segmented state still sends ranged GETs. The docs say 1 streams a single response. Discard the segmented state in this case and restart as a single stream.
Why the fix is not an edit
The saved state cannot go to download_single unchanged. That path resumes from downloaded on a file pre-allocated to total, so the remedy must also clear the state and restart the file. The inspected source does not establish that safe restart, so this section gives the remedy in prose only.

Keep the zero-filled segmented output from passing as a completed skip.
download_segmented allocates the output to its full size before it writes the resume state. If the resume write fails, the code falls back to a single stream. That fallback can fail before it truncates the file. The file then has the remote size but holds no data. A later run with OverwriteMode::Skip accepts that file without fetching it.
The sequence is:
The download is segmented: connections > 1, the server supports ranges, and the total is at least MIN_SEGMENTED_TOTAL.
set_len(total) allocates the output at crates/soar-dl/src/download.rs:577.
write_resume fails because the filesystem has no usable extended attributes. The code falls back at download.rs:612-614.
download_single(path, None) fails at Http::fetch (download.rs:673-681) before open_output truncates the file (download.rs:708).
The error propagates at download.rs:355 without removing the file.
On the next run with skip_existing, no resume state is found. is_complete finds no checksum and compares the file size with the HEAD size (download.rs:413-419). The sizes match, so the function returns Ok(output_path) at download.rs:324 without fetching.
The direct-link path (download_link, crates/soar-cli/src/download.rs:121-131) sets no checksum. Under skip_existing, get_overwrite_mode returns OverwriteMode::Skip (crates/soar-cli/src/download.rs:44-48). The CLI then reports the zero-filled file as the download result.
Before this PR, a partial single-stream file stayed shorter than the remote size. The size check rejected it. The pre-allocation removes that protection for this failure case.
Install paths pass a checksum when one is published (crates/soar-core/src/package/install.rs:94-96). With a checksum, is_complete verifies content and the file is re-downloaded.
Suggested direction: do not treat a size match as complete when the resume state is absent. Pre-allocate only after the resume state is durable, or remove the output on any failure before the first byte is written.

Clone every output file before any worker starts.
job.file.try_clone().expect("cloning the output file") runs inside the thread::scope loop. If dup() fails, for example at the file-descriptor limit, expect panics. The release profile sets panic = "abort", so the whole soar process aborts instead of returning a DownloadError. The resume checkpoint is written before segmented::run, so a later attempt can resume. The current command still crashes.
The suggested inline ? does not compile. The scope closure has no declared return type and its body ends in (). Returning early from the closure also does not cancel workers that were already spawned. thread::scope joins them before it returns, and they can keep downloading chunks in the meantime.
Clone all files before the first scope.spawn. A clone failure then returns before any worker starts:

before entering the thread::scope spawn loop, propagating any clone failure as
DownloadError::Io. Then consume those precloned files when constructing each
Worker so no worker starts if cloning fails.

download_chunk retries a transient chunk error up to three times with no delay. A rate-limited server that returns HTTP 429 can reject all three attempts within milliseconds. The download then fails, and only a manual rerun recovers it. Wait before each retry, and honor Retry-After when the server sends it.

Update the retry branch in download_chunk to wait before retrying transient
errors, honoring the response’s Retry-After value when available and using an
appropriate delay otherwise; preserve the existing cancellation and MAX_ATTEMPTS
behavior.

Require a strong ETag before any segmented transfer, including resume.
A segmented transfer with no ETag sends no If-Range. fetch_and_write accepts each 206 after it checks only the status, the Content-Range start, and the total size. If the resource changes mid-download and keeps its size, the output can mix chunks from two versions. Without an expected checksum, download_segmented returns that file as a successful download. Comparing response ETags inside the worker does not close this gap when both validators are absent.
Both entry points select the segmented path without checking the validator. The fresh selection passes remote.etag.as_deref(), which can be None. The resume branch passes info.etag without a check.
A weak ETag is sent in If-Range, but it does not establish byte identity. The gate therefore accepts only strong tags. A rejected transfer falls back to the single-stream path.
Suggested fix
Add the predicate at module scope in crates/soar-dl/src/download.rs:
+/// Returns whether `etag` is a strong validator. Only a strong entity tag+/// identifies the same bytes. A weak tag does not.+fn is_strong_validator(etag: Option<&str>) -> bool {+ etag.is_some_and(|tag| !tag.starts_with("W/"))+}
Gate the fresh segmented selection:
if let Some(total) = remote.size
&& remote.ranges_ok
&& total >= segmented::MIN_SEGMENTED_TOTAL
+ && is_strong_validator(remote.etag.as_deref())
{
Gate the segmented resume branch:
return match segmented::plan_from_resume(info.total, segments) {
- Some(resumed) if !size_changed => {+ Some(resumed) if !size_changed && is_strong_validator(info.etag.as_deref()) => {

Update the segmented-path selection in the fresh-download and resume flows to
require a present strong ETag, rejecting weak tags beginning with W/. Apply the
same validator check to both paths before calling the segmented transfer; when
it fails, use the existing single-stream fallback.

Sync chunk data before saving the segment checkpoint.
maybe_report writes the resume xattr before the chunk data it records is synced. After power loss, the xattr can persist while earlier chunk writes do not. Resume then skips those bytes. Without a checksum, the incomplete file is kept as complete.
Call sync_data after the segment snapshot is taken and before write_resume. Any checkpoint that survives then refers only to synced bytes. This adds one data sync per 1 MiB checkpoint, shared by all connections.

In maybe_report, sync the chunk data after taking the segment snapshot and
before calling write_resume, so a saved checkpoint never references unsynced
bytes; preserve the existing error logging if either operation fails.

Guard the new xattr tests with the same skip used elsewhere.
The new interrupted-download test calls read_resume_segments(&out).expect(...) with no skip check. The mixed-state and changed-resource tests call write_resume(...).unwrap() the same way. On a filesystem without user xattr support, these tests panic. The existing xattr tests in download.rs and oci.rs return early with skipping: filesystem lacks user xattrs when write_resume fails. Add that check before each new xattr write or read assertion. For the interrupted test, probe a file created in the temporary directory, because out does not exist before the first download.

Update the new xattr-dependent tests in segmented.rs to return early when user
xattrs are unsupported, matching the existing skip behavior in download.rs and
oci.rs. Check failures from write_resume before the mixed-state and
changed-resource assertions; for the interrupted-download test, probe a file
created in the temporary directory before calling read_resume_segments on the
not-yet-created output path.

Problem
soar dlfetched every file over a single HTTP connection, so throughput was bounded by the server or CDN's per-connection cap rather than the path capacity. On a 10 Gbps link it saturated around 25 MB/s while multi-connection downloaders reached far higher speeds.Solution
When a server supports byte ranges and the file is at least 8 MiB,
soar dlnow splits it into chunks and fetches them in parallel, each on its own connection, written at its offset into a pre-allocated output file.connections x 4chunks (minimum 4 MiB per chunk, at most 128 chunks) and workers pull from a shared queue. A connection that stalls or crawls only ever holds its current chunk while the rest of the queue drains, which also removes the "starts slow and jumps when a batch completes" ramp of static segment splits.--connectionsor globally viadownload_concurrencyin the config.Performance
