Java template regression #4539

Closed
Closed

Description

@hwellmann

After updating to 1.56.0, the Java template chooser no longer appears when creating a new Java file.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Add "java.templates.typeComment": ["/// ", "///", "/// @author ${user}"], or any other non-empty array to your workspace settings.

  2. Create a new file Foo.java via the explorer

  3. The usual chooser for class Foo, interface Foo, enum Foo should appear but does not.

Environment

  • Operating System: MacOS 14.6
  • JDK version: OpenJDK Runtime Environment Temurin-25.0.4+7
  • Visual Studio Code version: 1.141.0
  • Java extension version: 1.56.0

Workaround
Remove the java.templates.typeComment setting.

Hi, I'd like to contribute to this issue. I'll investigate why setting java.templates.typeComment prevents the Java type template chooser from appearing after creating a new .java file. I'll try to identify the regression introduced in version 1.56.0, reproduce it with a test case, and submit a fix with appropriate tests. Please let me know if there's any additional context or guidance before I begin.

    I managed to replicate this. 1.55 works but 1.56 and 1.57 don't.

@MeherSru if you have time, do you mind looking into this?
