Problem

The event detail pane shows the whole event as one JSON document. A request event is mostly its conversation, and a request re-sends the whole conversation on every turn. One live request was 670 KB:

  • 288 messages from earlier turns, 398 KB
  • 96 tool results, 166 KB
  • 26 tool schemas, 60 KB

Multi-line strings showed as one quoted line full of \n. To find what a turn added, the reader scrolled past all earlier turns.

Change

The pane renders the event as a tree.

  • Real newlines. A multi-line string shows as an indented block. Control runes are escaped, as strconv.Quote did before, so an ANSI sequence in a tool result cannot reach the terminal.
  • Clipped strings. A string longer than 5 lines or 1 KB shows its start, then … N more lines · size.
  • This turn first. The messages before the last assistant message fold to one line: ▸ 288 earlier messages · 398.4kB. The messages from that point to the end stay open. The rule reads only the open event, so it works for every agent, with subagents and with compaction.
  • Large lists fold. tools, toolResults and toolCalls show as one line each. MCP params/result and A2A parts fold when they are larger than 1 KB.
  • Enter is the only new key. A cursor line in a 2-column gutter shows where Enter acts. Enter opens or closes the fold at the cursor, and does nothing on other lines. ↑↓, j/k, b/f, g and G move the cursor. ← / h / esc still go back to Events, and → / l do nothing, as before.
  • Search opens folds. A fold that holds a match opens while the query is set. n/N move the cursor to the match.
  • Fold state. Kept on resize and when the full event arrives. Cleared when a new event opens.

Folds change only the view. y still writes the full event. The plugin detail pane gets the real newlines, and no cursor or folds.

On the 670 KB request, the pane now draws 108 lines.

Tests

  • detail_tree_test.go: the output format of all-open JSON is unchanged, block strings, control-rune escapes, clips at 5 lines and at 1 KB, multi-byte runes kept whole, each default fold, the earlier-messages rule (first turn, last message is assistant), search opens a fold, labels are escaped.
  • searchdoc_test.go: the gutter marks every row of the cursor line, and a 2-column terminal still wraps.
  • detail_folds_test.go: Enter opens and closes through the real keys, → and l do not fold, ← still goes back, Enter on a plain line or a tunnel row does nothing, folds survive the full-event fetch and a resize, a new event clears them, search opens a closed fold and n moves the cursor there, the plugin pane has no gutter.
  • The current scroll and search tests pass with no change. helpNoScrollHeight goes from 116 to 117 for the one new help row.
  • Benchmarks on a fixture shaped like the measured event: 0.07 ms per render by default. With the 147 KB message open: 6.1 ms per render, 3.2 ms per cursor move.

go vet ./... and gofmt -l are clean in cmd/agentop. The root cmd/agentop package times out in TestSetupRollbackWaitsOutLaunchdTeardown on this laptop. It times out the same way on main, and this PR changes nothing outside tui/.

Not tested

I did not use the pane in a live terminal. The keys, search and resize were driven from tests. One live event was rendered through showDetail in a test.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Event details now display as a navigable, foldable tree. Use the arrow keys to move through the content and Enter to open or close a section.
    • Large strings are shortened when folded, with the option to expand them. Search can reveal matches inside folded sections.
    • Fold choices persist when details refresh or the pane resizes, and reset when you open another event.
  • Improvements
    • Plugin details remain free of the event-detail cursor gutter.

Long events are hard to read in the detail pane. A request carries the
whole conversation, and multi-line strings show as one quoted line.

The spec adds a fold tree, clipped strings with real newlines, a cursor
line, and one fold over the messages that came before this turn.

Walkthrough

The event detail pane now displays event JSON as a foldable tree. It adds cursor navigation, search-aware rendering, string clipping and escaping, and tests for folding, persistence, and large events.

The new tree renderer sorts object keys, groups earlier messages, and applies default folds. It escapes terminal control characters and clips closed strings. ColorizeJSON renders the tree with all folds open.

The detail pane stores fold and cursor state, handles cursor movement and Enter-based fold toggling, and redraws for search. Fold state persists across resize and full-event arrival, and resets when reopening an event. Plugin detail retains viewport navigation without a cursor gutter.

A wrapped line taller than the viewport cannot be read past its first screen.

moveDetailCursor scrolls only to keep the cursor line's rows visible. If the line is taller than the viewport, last >= YOffset+Height is true. The offset becomes min(first, last-Height+1), which is first. So the view always shows the top of the line.

↑↓ and j/k then move the cursor to the adjacent line. They never scroll within the tall line. pgdown also maps back to the same line, because lineAtRow(firsts[i]+page) stays inside it.

An open single-line string over 1 KB is a common case, for example a minified JSON tool result or a base64 blob. The rows past the first screen cannot be reached with the keyboard. The old viewport scrolling could reach them. Only search (n) and yank (y) still work.

Scroll the viewport by one row first when the cursor line extends past the viewport edge. Move the cursor only when the line is fully in view. A fix for detailCursorKey:

Give pgup/pgdown the same treatment: scroll by a page when the target row is still inside the cursor line. Add a test with a single-line string of 10 KB or more.

parentPath panics on a path that ends in ] and has no [.

When p ends with ] and contains no [, strings.LastIndexByte(p, '[') returns -1. Then p[:-1] panics. Object keys come from event content, and mcp.params is client-controlled. A key such as a] gives the path mcp.params.a].

cursorLineFor reaches this call when the cursor's path is no longer drawn. One way to hit it is to search so that a fold opens, press n to put the cursor inside it, then clear the query so the fold closes. That crashes agentop.

Restore the detail pane's page and half-page key bindings.

When paneDetail is active, space no longer moves down one page, d and ctrl+d no longer move down half a page, and ctrl+u no longer moves up half a page. Add these cases to detailCursorKey. This restores vertical page movement and is separate from vertical scrolling within one oversized wrapped line.
