feat(ai-mcp): serve and call MCP extensions with createMCPServer setup and MCPClient.request - #1848
Conversation
createMCPServer({ setup }) gets each SDK McpServer after the tools,
resources and prompts are registered and before it connects. A server
can then declare an extension in capabilities.extensions and add a
handler for each of its methods.
MCPClient.request is the SDK Client.request, so a host can call a
method that the client has no helper for, such as skills/list of the
Skills extension.

Handle a rejected async setup Promise before throwing.
If an async setup rejects, this branch throws the intended TypeError but leaves the Promise rejection unhandled. On the repository’s Node 24 runtime, an unhandled rejection can terminate the process. Attach a rejection handler to the returned Promise before throwing, and cover a rejecting async callback in the setup-error test. (nodejs.org)

Thanks @argjentsahiti, this is a clean way to serve MCP extensions without inventing a new API. I reviewed it for correctness, tests, types, docs, and error handling, then pushed fixes: request is now required and uses the client's requestOptions, setup must be synchronous, and setup errors reach onerror in every session mode.

Resolve conflicts with TanStack#1848 (MCPClient.request) by keeping both sides. Review fixes: - getDiscoverResult is required on MCPClient (request already made the interface break hand-rolled clients); drop the ?.() calls. - Pass prior straight to Client.connect. - Docs sample keys the saved result by token with its own max age; drop ttlMs/cacheScope wording (not on the DiscoverResult type); say that connect with prior sends no request. - E2E counts server/discover requests and asserts the second connect sends none. - Unit tests: a prior with no shared version throws MCPConnectionError before any request; a spec 2025 server has no discover result.
A
createMCPServerserver can now serve an MCP extension, and anMCPClientcan call the methods of an extension.createMCPServertakes asetupfunction that gets each SDKMcpServerbefore it connects.MCPClient.requesttakes the same arguments as the SDKClient.requestand uses the client'srequestOptions.🎯 Changes
Why we need it: we serve the Skills extension (
io.modelcontextprotocol/skills) from acreateMCPServerserver. The server must list the extension incapabilities.extensionsand answerskills/listandskills/get. Our agent then callsskills/listwhen it connects. TodaycreateMCPServerandMCPClienthave no way to do either, so we patch the built package.setupruns on everyMcpServerthat the server builds, after the tools, resources, and prompts are registered and before the server connects. TheMcpServertype is exported from@tanstack/ai-mcp/server.setupmust be synchronous. An asyncsetupthrows aTypeError. Asetupthat throws goes toonerror, and the request gets a JSON-RPC 500. This is true in every session mode,'memory'included.MCPClient.requestis required on the interface. It applies the client'srequestOptionsunder the options that the caller passes. Afterclose()it throwsMCPConnectionError, like the other methods.docs/mcp/server.md, "Extension methods" indocs/tools/mcp-manual.md, and the package skill.@tanstack/ai-mcp.setupis a hook and not anextensionsoption because the SDK has no extension API yet. Skills support in the SDK is still the open PR typescript-sdk#2818. The SDK docs declare an extension withmcp.server.registerCapabilitiesand serve its methods withmcp.server.setRequestHandler(custom methods).setupgives you that same object.MCP sources:
extensionsfield of capabilities, which is a map of extension identifiers to per-extension settings objects." (versioning)server/discover(extensions overview).✅ Checklist
